Keisler to start Tues., Carp likely to DL

As usual, there will be more detail on all of this when my notebook goes up. But in the meantime, here are the morning updates from the pregame chat with TLR:

* Randy Keisler will start in Carpenter's place on Tuesday. It would be his fifth day, after he went on Thursday in Memphis' opener.

* The corresponding move likely will be to place Carpenter on the DL. He flew with the team out of Houston, then headed back to STL last night. He's being checked out by Paletta today.

* Scott Spiezio is ill; he apparently has something resembling food poisoning. It's uncertain whether he'll come to the park or stay back at the hotel.

Oy vey. The Cardinals are not looking like division favorites right now.

Of course, IMO, they didn't look like it in December, but I think other people are coming around now.

Wasn't Keisler a top prospect in the Yankees system about 5 years ago?

Yeah. He has gotten torched in all three of his ML starts. He had a really good spring and was kind of whining when he didn't make the team.

I'd personally much rather see Blake Hawksworth, but I guess they don't think he is ready.

Update from the post game show:

Mild arthirits and mild impingement in elbow. No evidence of acute ligament injury. Placed on 15 day DL retroactive to April 2nd.

Heck yes.

i wonder if this is as accurate as cubs medical releases...

oh well i hope he gets back as soon as possible but not before the cardinals are fifteen games back

Am I a bad person for not caring? I mean I don't wish him injury, but it's nice to see the Cardinals lose their ace like the Cubs have for the last three seasons off and on.

I'm the same way. I'm happy that he's injured because it hurts the Cards but I generally don't seriously wish injury on anybody. I've jokingly wished injury on players in the heat of the moment but the only guy I really want to see get injured - and this is only enough to end his career - is Barry Bonds.

Pitchers generally go downhill after their arms go under the knife. This is less true than it once was, but for the most part you can chart a guy's fall from grace back to the first major arm surgery that he had.

Carpenter has been the exception, and good for him. But it's not a suprise that eventually he has to pay the piper.

I don't wish injury on anyone, and want to beat the Cards for real this year -- not some AAA affiliate's substitute pitchers. I'm just saying a guy like Carpenter has been ahead of the curve for awhile now on the injury front, and was due for at least a bit of a letdown.

I want him to tear his ACL's, PCL's and MCL's while walking up to the plate, one homer shy of the record. Hopefully it will be against the Padres. And against a pitcher he mashes -- where a home run would be a lock.

I've been hearing this a lot.

If we were to win the division, it wouldn't make it feel any worse knowing that we beat out a Carp-less Cardinal team.

I don't wish injury on anyone either, but I'm glad he's out and I hope it's for the season because it hurts a division rival and helps the Cubs. Simple as that.

I'm leaning towards this camp.

I'd rather beat a full-strength Cards team, but considering the laughable amount of injuries that probably cost us the 2004 division (or at least a wildcard where IMO we would've steamrolled everyone on our way to the Series), we're owed one (or thirty).

I wouldn't mind it of course. But it would be that much better to win the division while having a solid winning record against the full-strength Cards.

The way we're playing right now we'll need all the injuries to opponents that we can get.

From Will Carroll

Nothing's really changed when it comes to Chris Carpenter, but the interviews that various St. Louis media did with Dr. George Paletta were stunning. It seems that the Cardinals did an MRI of Carpenter before signing him to the extension and, if I'm reading this right, knew that he had bone chips.

Unfounded Rumor Alert:

I was discussing Carpenter with a well-informed Cardinals fan friend of mine, and he says it's probably more than likely that Carpenter gets shut down for the year. Any other Cards fans out there thinking the same?

I suppose it could happen but I haven't heard any rumors like that. The Cards are usually pretty open and honest about injuries.

Well what's his status right now? Is it just wait and see?

This also doesn't make any sense. If he gets "shut down" for the year, that will mean that there's something seriously wrong with his arm. If this were September and the Cards were out of the playoff race, then yes, they might opt to sit him out for the rest of the year. But teams don't just decide to sit players out with 90% of the season remaining, just because that player has some injury concern.

No sense whatsoever? I think it would be a prudent decision if his arm doesn't show any improvement in the near future. The guy was just signed to a multi-year deal, I'd like to think the Cardinals management would be smart enough to realize when it's better shutting down one of your most important players when continued use could lead to even more problems down the line, i.e. the remaining years left on his contract. It could very well be that there is something seriously wrong with his arm. I wasn't saying it was likely, just that rather well-informed Cardinals fan had mentioned it under the stipulation that his arm situation doesn't improve.

If he had to be shut down for five months, then what makes you think he'd be any better by the time spring training rolls around next year? If he doesn't pitch again this year, it'll be because there is something is structurally wrong with his arm.

They'll shut down Carp for the rest of the year if they determine he needs major surgery. My only point was I doubt the rumor is true because the Cards are pretty open about the extent of injuries.
