ESPN had on their front page that it was 4/44. Now they've just changed it back to 4/40. :-k

Maybe they'll drop it to 4/32?

Waddle on Sports Central is saying the same thing we've all been saying, that Lilly is okay as a 3rd or 4th starter, but the Cubs still need a 2nd starter.

If Rich Hill pitches the way he pitched in the second half of last season, we have a #2 starter.

His name is Carlos Zambrano.

So we now have...

Zambrano

Lilly

Miller

Hill

Prior/bunch of crappy young guys

The top three are locks for the rotation. Hill will be as well, assuming he's not traded. With Prior filling out the last spot if he's healthy, I really don't see Hendry signing another starter, especially considering the number of other internal options for the rotation.

iirc hendry said prior would start the year as the 'sixth starter'

Yeah, I agree that he shouldn't be relied on. But we currently have 4 major league starters, with a plethora of young arms and Mark Prior all vying for the 5th spot in the rotation. Say Hendry signs another arm and Prior reports to ST in great shape, what does he do? Zambrano's obviously not going anywhere. He'll have Lilly and another expensive arm. They aren't going to the pen. Miller is probably all set in the rotation. So that leaves Hill. Does Hill get pushed to long relief? To Iowa? Traded? I just don't think it's smart to invest another 10 million dollars into the rotation.

i was under the impression that miller would move to the bullpen. he would probably be very effective as a set up guy for wood.

I wouldn't count on it. Doesn't he have incentives based on how many starts he makes? Hendry has always been a man of his word, and if he told Miller that he'll start next year, you can pretty much gaurantee that he will.

No reason to move Miller to the pen. They already have a plethora of arms there now as it is.

Wood

Dempster

Eyre

Howry

Cotts

Ohman

Wuertz

Novoa

all the kids and still quite possibly Glendon Rusch.

This is a good luxury to have. You can never have enough pitching.

If the rotation ends up being this:

Zambrano

Suppan OR Penny

Hill

Lilly

Miller/Prior

I would be content.

It wouldn't be half bad if Prior were even the Prior of 2004-2005.

No kidding. It would actually be pretty good.

Or we could get greedy and ask for Prior of 2003.

Don't know if anyone heard the interview with Lilly's agent on XM. Basically he said that Soriano was a big part of Lilly signing. Said that Lilly helped Soriano learn english when they were roomates and teammates with the Yankees.

WFAN reported that Lilly's agent called the Yankees and to see if they would match the deal so that Lilly could go there and Cashman declined. I didn't hear any audio of Lilly's agent saying this though, so I'm not sure that that's true.

Yeah, I heard that Hendry, (sweet) Lou, and Soriano were recruiting him.

Here's a pretty relevant and thorough run-down on Teddy since he's now a cub:

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2006/10/2007_mlb_free_a_6.html

Injury points (since the FOX article mentioned his history of arm problems):

October 1999: Shoulder surgery

July 2002: Inflammation in shoulder

February 2005: tendinitis in shoulder

July 2005: tendinitis in biceps

September 2005 (obviously not a good year): discomfort in shoulder blade

March 2006: mild right shoulder "injury"

June 2006: shoulder tightness

Sensing a trend here? He has plenty of shoulder problems. So I think we should all be prepared for that. Also check this out (I didn't remember this):

August: Misses start with stiff neck. Later in month, has heated argument with manager John Gibbons after being pulled from awful start. Gibbons gets bloody nose.

October: Lilly files for free agency.

He's got spunk, I suppose that's something.

I would like Ted Lilly of 2004 for this entire contract.

Thanks

Yeah, if BABIP stays consistenly 40 points below what it should be, we will be quite happy with this deal. If he isn't so lucky...well we can kiss a chance at the playoffs goodbye.

What pitchers don't have shoulder problems. Most pitch through them. Did you hear that PRIOR!!!!

You're right. Just thought I would point out the trend.

The fact that he beat the crap out of his manager after his desire was questioned is also interesting 8-)
