I pray that Prior comes to spring Healthy. Man, that would make all the difference in the world with this staff.

I pray Prior and Miller come to ST healthy, Guzman wins the 5th starter job and we then have a 10m Glendon Rusch sitting on the end of the bench.

If Prior and Miller come healthy, you have 5 starters without Guzman.

If Lilly is the 10m Glendon Rusch sitting on the end of the bench and

Zambrano, Prior, Miller, Hill, Guzman are the other starters, who am I leaving out?

yah and Kap just said... the cubs might finalize Meche by night..... i seriously dont.. DONT want Meche.

I honestly don't think anyone does. I don't understand the point in signing Meche?

Well...he is a pitcher. He's got that going for him.

well so is what i'm drinking from, but that was purchased at the dollar store.

At least use a straw.

Too bad that pitcher you have doesn't have a career WHIP around 1.40. You could have been rich.

So we now have...

Zambrano

Lilly

Miller

Hill

Prior/bunch of crappy young guys

The top three are locks for the rotation. Hill will be as well, assuming he's not traded. With Prior filling out the last spot if he's healthy, I really don't see Hendry signing another starter, especially considering the number of other internal options for the rotation.

Then I guess you missed what I was praying for. I hope Prior, Miller and Guzman all beat Lilly out of a job, because when healthy, I believe they are all better pitchers than Lilly.

iirc hendry said prior would start the year as the 'sixth starter'

Now I see. Also, don't forget Marshall.

Yeah, I agree that he shouldn't be relied on. But we currently have 4 major league starters, with a plethora of young arms and Mark Prior all vying for the 5th spot in the rotation. Say Hendry signs another arm and Prior reports to ST in great shape, what does he do? Zambrano's obviously not going anywhere. He'll have Lilly and another expensive arm. They aren't going to the pen. Miller is probably all set in the rotation. So that leaves Hill. Does Hill get pushed to long relief? To Iowa? Traded? I just don't think it's smart to invest another 10 million dollars into the rotation.

I don't know who I rate higher, Marshall or Lilly. Probably Lilly at this point.

Probably? Marshall was awful last year. He's nowhere close to Lilly.

That means he'll just start the second game of double headers.

Waddle on Sports Central is saying the same thing we've all been saying, that Lilly is okay as a 3rd or 4th starter, but the Cubs still need a 2nd starter.

Question...

What's Meche's upside? Why (besides incompetence) do the Cubs and a couple other teams have this guy highly regarded enough to shell out money? I don't follow the AL all that much outside of the playoffs.

His numbers look OK, at best, but I could see them improving with a move to the NL. (Same with Lilly)

I've seen some here say he has power pitcher type stuff, which is odd because it's not really reflected at all in his numbers. If it's true, though, there's always the chance that he'll finally figure it out, especially with a move to the other league.

What kind of stuff does he actually have? Mid 90's FB? Good breaking ball(s)? Anybody actually know or have a good scouting report on him?

You have Miller as a lock for the rotation, and you have him ahead of Hill? Frankly, I hope he's nowhere near the rotation. If he can beat out Prior (or just happens to be the healthier of the two) for the 5th spot, so be it.

Just surprised me to see him there.

I think I read that injuries have dropped his fastball from 96-98 down to 94, but he has a really good breaking ball to go with it.

I think they believe he just hasn't put it altogether yet. Of course, I think if he hasn't put it together by now, why should we believe he will later, especially locked into a long term deal?

The ordering was based on how likely I see them as actually being in the rotation, not on how I'd structure it. But yeah, if we have Lilly and Hill in our rotation, I'd have Miller (or another righty) between them. I do think Miller will have a solid year next year though.

i was under the impression that miller would move to the bullpen. he would probably be very effective as a set up guy for wood.
