instead of downgrading from jones to lugo, how about we upgrade from izturis to lugo?

soriano

lugo

lee

ramirez

jones

barrett

murton

derosa

...isn't too bad.

More livable, but then you have to get rid of Izturis somehow.

i really don't think that would be that hard. you may have to pay some of his $, but someone would take him. heck, he can be the cubs' backup ss if he wants. he'll probably be hurt half the season anyway.

If you sign Lugo, what are Boston's options at SS?

I think that's exactly it. Boston's been after Lugo for quite a while. If we sign him, we may well be able to send Izturis there, which would be EXCELLENT.

I wouldn't mind picking up Jason Jennings, but I have no interest in signing Lugo to play CF unless Hendry has something up his sleeve to get a big bat for LF as well. Jone to Lugo would be too big a downgrade offensively IMO, and we still need to add offensively.

I would imagine Hendry would target Cliff Floyd if Jones was traded.

Floyd makes Jones look like a gold glove OF.

Problem is Hendry: Izturis = Dusty: Neifi. Izturis isn't going anywhere.

Yeah, I can't see Izturis going anywhere this year either. His option might not be picked up though, so it might just be one more year of him.

Even with Lugo being signed for CF though, this offense will be decent. They will slug better, and the OBP will be improved as well. Murton will have less at-bats taken away from poor offensive players, and that will increase production in LF. Lugo would be a better OBP Juan Pierre type, so that is an upgrade. Soriano is going to probably be a little better in OBP and SLG than Jones was last year. Izturis will actually be a slight upgrade at SS from the production last year. Lee will be a huge improvement at 1B.

The only 2 positions to probably stay about the same are 3B and 2B, and the only one likely to drop is C. If they get a better bench, this offense will probably be in the middle of the league-and if they get Schmidt and Jennings, that could be enough.

Jones and pieces parts for Jennings.

Sign Schmidt.

Sign Lugo.

Izturis for Hinske.

Sign Floyd.

Trade for Church or Gross for CF.

Extend Zambrano.

Take a nap.

There are two parts to this discussion, the trade of Jones for Jennings which I think is pretty good. Jennings compares favorably with most of the mediocre FA starters (Meche, Padilla, Lilly, etc.) mentioned. As for Lugo, it would be great as long as it is tied to another deal dumping Izturis so Lugo can play SS. Sign one FA pitcher, sign Floyd for the bench and some platooning (250 ABs), and make a deal for an OF (someone like Church).

I understand that many disagree, but I think that I could live with this...

Soriano (RF)

Lugo (CF)

Lee

ARam

Floyd/Murt

Barrett

DeRosa

Izturis

If the staff looks like this...

Z

Schmidt

Jennings

Hill

Prior

I would then have any eye towards improving the OF at the trade deadline. I think we could do something good with that team.

Of course, if Soriano doesn't need to lead off...

Lugo

Murt

Lee

ARam

Soriano

Barrett

DeRosa

Izturis

...then I think you have a much better lineup.

I'm totally on board with getting anyone who can post a sub-4 ERA in Coors Field. But why oh why oh why does Lugo have to play CF in all these projections?

But that's post-humidor Coors. Now, if it were pre-humidor Coors, I would be impressed.

Because Jones is the new Walker. Nobody knows why he must go. But dammit to hell, he's got to GO!!

Not quite. People were happy when we got Walker in the first place, not so much with Jones. It's funny how Jones has gone from a "he must go guy" to a "we need him unless we get another big lefty bat." I understand why, it's just funny how things work sometimes.

Well, Jones is supposedly getting traded in this deal, so CF would be open. But why not just look for another CF and put Lugo at SS?

Why is everyone so high on Lugo? He's not that good of a player.

Lugo is the only decent SS available, and look at the difference in Lugo and Izturis. If it's Lugo for CF, then I don't want him, but if we can bump Izturis out and get Lugo at short, I'm allllll for it.

This is so crazy. It's Hendry being Hendry. Instead of looking to make the team better he goes and gets a player, a lead-off hitter. I'd be ok if Hendry would have gotten Soriano and put him a second base. He defense is not good, but I'd put up with it. Now that means they need a CFer. Target one. Instead they want to get Lugo. Lugo would be fine at SS. At CF, not so much.

I'd be somewhat ok with an everyday starting 9 ofL

Pitcher

Barrett -C

Lee - 1st

Soriano - 2nd

Aramis - 3rd

Lugo - SS

Murton - LF

CF?

Jones - RF

If they could find a way to trade for A. Jones, and Hudson I could be ecstatic.

Instead the Cubs are like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple of pieces that don't fit.

The one thing not mentioned is that the SS FA market is even worse next year than it is this year. So if we do not acquire Lugo, we will definitely have to pick up Izturis' option barring a trade.

Thoughts...

I'm not a big fan of Jennings, but he is good value for Jones.

Lugo may not be as much of a downgrade from Jones as everyone thinks...

Lugo OPS+

06:94 (122 in TB)

05:105

04:94

Jones OPS+

06:107

05:99

04:90

Because Hendry loves Izturis
