I'll say this again: I strongly believe that this will be Guzman's breakout year. His ceiling is tremendous and I am not willing to trade him (let alone him and Gallagher) for a pitcher at the Jennings / Westbrook level.

Would you trade them along with say, Cedeno or Izturis, for Miguel Tejada?

If the Cubs signed Schmidt? Yes!

with therumblings of signings like schmidt and lilly...i think if we deal jones, we would be in the market for a big bat..that we should have gotten the last 2 years instead of jones-burnitz. with the name of man ram out there..perhaps, just perhaps he would be in our plans if we dealt jones.

certainly we would like a lineup of..

soriano-cf

murton-rf

dlee 1b

manram lf

aram 3b

barrett -c

delarosa-theriot 2b

isturis-cedeno ss

p

zambrano

schmidt

jennngs

hill

lilly

now that would be something to talk about...

with drew going to bosox, manram would be much more of a salary drop than before, and we would not have to pony up equal value, so young pitchers might get it done, they wouldn't want izturis' salary bit maybe cedeno or theriot!

I'd trade Guzman. I would not trade Gallagher for Jennings. I agree with Tim, that Angel may break out this year, but I really like Jennings and odds are against Angel, no matter what I think about him. Gallagher is real close and could easily be a part of the rotation for good in 2008, if not sooner. I would do Guzman and Marshall at the most, if they wanted 2 pitching prospects.

How is Gooz going to break out? His stuff has regressed considerably. He no longer has 3 plus pitches. His command could come around, but I just don't see him as the #1 or #2 ceiling guy anymore. That sucks, b/c he could really bring it pre-injuries.

Probably.

Soriano

Murton

Lee

Ramirez

Tejada

Jones

Barrett

DeRosa

would be the best lineup in the division and probably in the NL.

What's the deal with Clint Barmes? Was last year an off year because of injury, or is he really not all that good?

I'm going to go with "really not all that good."

He had bad luck with balls in play last year, but even if his BABIP matched up better with his line drive percentage, we're talking about a .278 OBP instead of a .264.

Still like the Mets line up more.

Hate to quibble, and it's moot since the Cubs won't get Tejada...but I'd bat him 4th to be honest, with Ramirez 5th. Tejada has superior OBP and I want as many guys on base as possible in front of Aramis, our most reliable RBI man.

I would also flip-flop Jones and Barrett as you have them, Barrett is the far superior hitter and would provide better protection for Aramis IMO.

I'm afraid most teams will ask the cubs for more than we should give....why??? Look no further than Nolasco,Pinto and Mitre for the 1 yr rental of JP. I guess teams are relying on Hendry to overpay .....again.

Do any other trades come to mind where Hendry vastly overpaid?

Ramirez hits for significantly more power than Tejada and their OBP's are close enough. Aramis walks more, so Miggy has to put up a much better BA to get an OBP advantage. He has the last couple years, but I don't trust a player with more K's to sustain a higher BA over the long run. Bottom line is Aramis is a better hitter and I'd prefer he gets more AB's than Tejada.

I put Jones ahead of Barrett for two simple reasons:

1) When Blanco is in the lineup, everyone could stay in place

2) Getting the lefty hitter as high as possible

He gave up a living, breathing human being for Jose Macias.

Originally the Expos wanted a keg of Old Style but Hendry turned them down.

I thought there was some debate over whether or not he was actually breathing at the time.

Bump. Jennings has turned down the Rockies offer of a 3/24 extension, making it more likely he gets traded (per Roto). Can't say I blame him after seeing what the Royals just paid Gil Meche.

Cubs need to go get Jennings if they are not going to be players for Hudson or Penny.

Jason Jennings-S-Rockies Dec. 8 - 9:27 pm et

The Rockies are open to moving Jason Jennings to the Astros, but they'd want right-hander Jason Hirsh and either Dan Wheeler or Willy Taveras in return.

If they could get Hirsh alone for Jennings, they should make the trade, no questions asked. Hirsh would be under control for six years to Jennings' one, and there's a real chance he'll be a better pitcher than Jennings over the life of the $10 million-per-year contract Jennings is going to get as a free agent.

If it takes Hirsh + Wheeler to get Jennings, that means we'd need to offer something like Gallagher + Ohman. That seems pretty rich for Jason Jennings, IMO. If I have to give up that much talent, I want Tim Hudson or Brad Penny, their contracts be-damned.

Agreed.

Jennings for whoever could end up being the B-version of Kazmir for Zambrano.

and a difference maker.

I think Jones and Dempster, followed by Ohman are the probable suspects in dealing for a rental CF'er.

The thing is whether the Cubs could engineer a real difference maker like Tejada or Posada and include one or more of the AAA pitchers and Barrett.

Oakland needs an OF to replace Payton...

Jones and a prospect or two for one of their younger pitchers?

While A's GM Billy Beane said this week that he plans on going with Dan Johnson at first base, he is on the lookout for another outfielder to replace Jay Payton.

As things stand now, the A's would use Johnson at first against righties and Bobby Kielty in left against lefties, with Nick Swisher moving back and forth between the two positions. Howver, if the A's sign Cliff Floyd or someone comparable, Johnson could find himself back on the bench.

If we swipe Floyd away from them, we could be in the market to trade a Jones package to them for one of their young pitchers (Brad Halsey, Joe Blanton, etc.) or one of their younger OF'ers who they obviously aren't going to play..... like Javier Herrera, who is the same age as Pie, and on par as just as good a player. Maybe it couldn't hurt to see if they'd be interested in Jones for something we need.

Just throwing that out there.
