I guess the question is, where does Hendry go from here?

Roll his life and give Zambrano to Steinbrenner for a package with A-Rod in it? Then bid serious cash for the other Japanese dude, and give Jason Schmidt a blank check. And probably Miguel Batista or Padilla too.

And still have to add a bat.

Good luck Jimbo.

Honestly? I hope he spends a lot of money signing a lot of mediocre players to short-term contracts.

Well, given his track record, that's a pretty realistic dream.

Think about it. Kinzer and A-ram have nothing to gain by saying he will take a lower deal to stay in Chicago. I believe they are saying all that to get other teams calling them up and saying "no, we'll offer you x amount of dollars, don 't do a hometown deal."

I have a feeling this offseason is going to be a lot like the Bulls offseason from around 5 years ago when they had a ton of money and could've landed Duncan, Grant Hill, or Tracy McGrady. Instead they wound up with "The Main Man" Ron Mercer.

I can see Hendry missing out on "the big 3" SP's, Soriano, and ending up with guys like Padilla and some other bum.

I think that we should just drop this whole 'trying to win' crap and go a different route.

We have a long tradition of losing, and as such we should embrace this and be proud of our losing history.

Think about it...there are 29 other teams competing to win, a pretty saturated market there. We'd be the only team competing to lose, we would create our own niche. We'd be one of a kind. We should seriously consider this.

i thought that was the plan all along

gotta say, this post is about the only thing that could have cured the mood the rest of this thread had put me in. :)

That's technically tampering.

It's time to blow this team up. Trade everything of value, load up on prospects and young players, and just put the kibosh on the next two years.

I said this exact same thing in another thread. I was hoping that my teams wouldn't have to go through that hell again, but the Cubs are gonna try and do it.

Sure it is, but I'm also sure it goes on. You know they have a good idea who is going to be offering contracts f he tests the market, and they didn't get that information from the newspaper.

I'm so lost here. The MLB.com front page story about Aramis posted at about 7 PM today makes the last minute talks sound even rosier than the article on Cubs.com:

As for Ramirez, he likes the Windy City so much, agent Paul Kinzer appears to be offering the Cubs a serious hometown discount to make a deal happen. Well, "adopted hometown" discount, anyway, since the Dominican calls Santo Domingo his home.

Kinzer told the Chicago Sun-Times that his objective on the open market would be a deal as long as seven years, and also freely made references to the $119 million contract given to Carlos Beltran by the Mets two years ago.

But the agent also told the paper, "There will be a hometown discount. [The Cubs] definitely want to keep him, and that is still his No. 1 choice. [GM] Jim [Hendry] knows where we stand."

What the hell happened?

What happened?

I think all of that is just agent speak = crap.

Or the Cubs wouldn't pony up with the years they wanted. Ever since the MacPhail era the Cubs have not wanted to give out longer term contracts.

If his agent said those things to a reporter I think they are closer to the truth, than he was just blowing smoke.

Hendry is not getting the job done. Both Lee and Rameriz kind of fell in his lap. Nomar had to be dealt and Hendry gave the Sox the best offer. He's not done much to bring talent to this team. His handling of the Sosa fiasco was just pathetic. It reminds me of the Ed Lynch era.

Aramis is just in another of the long line of players who should have stayed with the Cubs.

I agree. Hell with it. Stick Scott Moore out there for 162 and see what he can do.

Good job by Hendry and the Cubs botching this up big time. What a bunch of amatures. The Baseball world, yet again, laughs at this stinkin' team!

Do they? I don't think anyone ever notices anything with us outside of obsessed White Sox and Cardinals fans.

Considering one of the best young hitters in baseball hit the market, I think the baseball world noticed.

Oh, I'm sure people notice HIM. I just think most baseball fans don't give a rat's patoot about the Cubs as a whole. Aramis might as well have emerged from a void.

This pretty much confirms that load of crap about wanting to win a World Series.

Jim Hendry will go down in history as the worst General Manager in the history of the Chicago Cubs, and that's saying a lot. We went from 5 outs away from the world series to 90 losses, and now we have lost our best offensive player.

But, never fear! We'll sign Mark DeRosa! He'll "hustle"! He'll "scrap"! He'll be everything Aramis wasn't!...including good. He'll suck. And then people will wonder why they pissed and moaned about jogging out 20 groundouts over the course of a season while the gamer of a 3B we'll have hits .270 but busts it down the line every time he grounds weakly to short.

Screw this. Screw it screw it screw it. Screw Jim Hendry. I hate that man. He'll overpay to get his Neifi and his Glendon Rusch and his Henry Blanco, but heaven forbid we act like a major market team and pay a guy market value! God no! If we paid Aramis $6m more than his 2006 salary ($17m), then how could we afford the veteran savvy of Henry Blanco and John Mabry? Where would Cesar Izturis go? Good thing we dealt Maddux to his old buddy Ned Colletti and took on a terrible contract for a terrible SS. We already HAD a terrible SS. At least he made league minimum.

It sure will be nice watching a 5th place team that hustles and has a manager who yells, and a front office that pays lip service to being a contender, but shys away from the big decisions and big contracts.

Maybe so, but even with his faults, I'm sure Hendry is offering a good chunk of change and years to A-ram. I just don't think he really wants to be a Cub.

Who can blame him though?
