Just to be devil's advocate here, but we have no idea what Hendry is offering Ramirez. Maybe he just doesn't want to play for the Cubs anymore.

If he walks, it doens't necessarilly mean it wass 100% Hendry.

He doesn't want to play here because we are terrible. Jim Hendry allowed and aided that happening. Again nice work Jimmy. At least this pretty much means he will be gone now.

I guess the question is, where does Hendry go from here?

Roll his life and give Zambrano to Steinbrenner for a package with A-Rod in it? Then bid serious cash for the other Japanese dude, and give Jason Schmidt a blank check. And probably Miguel Batista or Padilla too.

And still have to add a bat.

Good luck Jimbo.

Screw you, Jimbo.

He is gonna get chastized at the Convention. He better just do a video conference.

I'm sure they'll be teary-eyed at the sight of 16,000 people paying for the privilege of being in the same room as they are.

I'm just really curious to see how this is reported tomorrow. If the Cubs offered him 15+ million a year, I don't see how it is 100% Hendry and co. fault.

If Kinzer and A-ram were serious about Chicago being the #1 choice and willing to take a lower deal, then that should get it done. If not, they are just blowing smoke about all that.

Good job by Hendry and the Cubs botching this up big time. What a bunch of amatures. The Baseball world, yet again, laughs at this stinkin' team!

creating yet another hole for a team that already had planned to pursue two starting pitchers, an outfield slugger, a center fielder and maybe a second baseman.

creating yet ANOTHER hole for a team without this, this, this, this, this, maybe this, this, this, this, and this, oh and this.

I'm so lost here. The MLB.com front page story about Aramis posted at about 7 PM today makes the last minute talks sound even rosier than the article on Cubs.com:

As for Ramirez, he likes the Windy City so much, agent Paul Kinzer appears to be offering the Cubs a serious hometown discount to make a deal happen. Well, "adopted hometown" discount, anyway, since the Dominican calls Santo Domingo his home.

Kinzer told the Chicago Sun-Times that his objective on the open market would be a deal as long as seven years, and also freely made references to the $119 million contract given to Carlos Beltran by the Mets two years ago.

But the agent also told the paper, "There will be a hometown discount. [The Cubs] definitely want to keep him, and that is still his No. 1 choice. [GM] Jim [Hendry] knows where we stand."

What the hell happened?

I think that we should just drop this whole 'trying to win' crap and go a different route.

We have a long tradition of losing, and as such we should embrace this and be proud of our losing history.

Think about it...there are 29 other teams competing to win, a pretty saturated market there. We'd be the only team competing to lose, we would create our own niche. We'd be one of a kind. We should seriously consider this.

Honestly? I hope he spends a lot of money signing a lot of mediocre players to short-term contracts.

Hendry is a short-termer. He should have been fired with the change in management and wasn't. He'll be gone when new ownership arrives.

I just hope that he doesn't screw up this franchise for the next decade with idiotic moves to try to salvage next year.

Do they? I don't think anyone ever notices anything with us outside of obsessed White Sox and Cardinals fans.

I think all of that is just agent speak = crap.

I know I am in the minority but I would have a hard time paying that much to a player that doesn't play hard all the time, is ok defensivly, has nagging injuries, and isn't in the best shape even if he is a great hitter. That being said he will be very hard to replace.

Considering one of the best young hitters in baseball hit the market, I think the baseball world noticed.
