Maybe Ramirez stays?

Its still very possible. Maybe even probable. Its impossible for us to know whats probable at this point without knowing the minds of Hendry and Ramirez. But according to all that has been said publicly, Hendry wants to keep him and Ramirez wants to stay, so...

I don't think it's going to be possible once other teams like the Angels, Red Sox, and Dodgers start throwing offers at him. If it doesn't get done tonight I'm afraid it doesn't get done at all.

Not to be cavalier about the situation, but I would give the chances Aramis remains a Cub 65/35. He's already come out in the press saying there would be a hometown discount. The parties are talking vigorously. Cubs have money to spend. There's no reason for Hendry not to offer 6 yrs.

If those teams throw a lot of money at Ramirez look at how easy it will for the Cubs to re-sign Pierre!

Sure there is, haven't you heard? Hendry is an idiot.

Come on CW. There's ample evidence to support the fact that Hendry isn't good at his job.

Aram also said he had no intention of opting out of his contract, but we all know how that went.

He's got to feed his family. I wonder how much Hendry offered him? Maybe 13 a year and some Bubba Burger coupons.

Really? Everything I remember reading said he fully planned on using his opt-out clause, but wanted to stay here in Chicago.

If Hendry signs the right guys, makes a few trades, and gets lucky enough for the Cubs to have a reasonably healthy year, then he will be a genius. Look at Kenny Williams on the South Side. He was the saddest excuse as a GM and had many people calling him dumb. Now he's considered a top-notch GM. Sports is a totally fickle business. For you Bear fans, Rex Grossman has gone from being an MVP candidate to being horrible in a few weeks. Lovie Smith has gone from a savior and a genuis to a fool for not replacing Grossman in the same time span.

Kenny williams has won 520 games and lost 449. He has NEVER HAD A BELOW .500 SEASON. He has always had a lower payroll than the cubs, I think. This is simply a bad comparison, Hendry is bad because his teams lose a lot of games, people thought williams was bad because they disagreed with his moves.

no that are feeling are on aram mind, but do you think he could be saying all the "home town discount, 1st choice cubs" stuff just so he can leave the team looking like he was wronged?

i'm not going to be able to sleep tonight. and i gotta bad feeling i'm going to be in a foul mood at work tomorrow. this is going to be a crushing lose.

Yes, there is. And there is a huge difference between having failed and being an idiot.

There is also ample evidence that he has done some very smart things.

I can't believe people are trying to argue that we can't call Hendry a stupid GM.

I never said you couldn't call him a stupid GM. Just that it isn't a very supportable statement.

Has he failed the last couple of years? Yes.

Has some of his moves and non-moves not worked out and angered us? Yes.

Have we called for him to do different moves than he has done? Yes.

Does any of that equal that he is stupid? No.

One side of the scale is far heavier than the other.

Does it equal him as a person is stupid? No. Does it equal him as a GM is stupid? Probably so.

I'd say that is a very supportable statement, but still debatable.

Look, I'm one that subscribes to the axiom that the more a man learns, the less he knows for sure. So, from where I sit, we simply don't know enough to hold these opinions so dear and to state them with such certainty.

But I'm certainly in the minority when it comes to that and not just on this board, so have at it.

MLB.com Hot Stove

As the day wore on, toward the midnight deadline closing teams' exclusive negotiating window with their own free agents, there was a chance of at least one premier player being taken off the floor before the doors swung open.

Third baseman Aramis Ramirez's camp continued heavy dialogue with the Cubs, seeking a solution that would make both sides happy.

The Cubs do not wish to expose to the temptations of an open market a corner infielder who has hit 105 homers and driven in 314 runs in three full seasons in Chicago.

As for Ramirez, he likes the Windy City so much, agent Paul Kinzer appears to be offering the Cubs a serious hometown discount to make a deal happen. Well, "adopted hometown" discount, anyway, since the Dominican calls Santo Domingo his home.

Kinzer told the Chicago Sun-Times that his objective on the open market would be a deal as long as seven years, and also freely made references to the $119 million contract given to Carlos Beltran by the Mets two years ago.

But the agent also told the paper, "There will be a hometown discount. [The Cubs] definitely want to keep him, and that is still his No. 1 choice. [GM] Jim [Hendry] knows where we stand."

And there's your big difference between the national and world markets for ballplayers: Ramirez can take a lower offer, but the Seibu Lions have no such latitude when it comes to Matsuzaka.
