I understand Cashman is trying to get the best possible deal for Sheffield, but to turn down both

The Phillies deal that included Gavin Floyd and a Padres deal that included Scott Linebrink, is beyond insane.

Everybody knows that Yankees are trying to trade Sheffield, and everybody knows Sheffield no longer wants to be a Yanks. So to turn down either deal, is beyond idiotic, and I hope they can't trade Sheffield, cause you know Sheffield will tear ANY chemistry that team might have to pieces.

What is so crazy about turning down a Gavin Floyd deal? Have you seen his numbers the last two years? He is not the prospect he once was.

I know the Yankees turned down this deal with Linebrink, but today Peter Gammons was on Mike and Mike and said that he believes Sheff will end up with the Cubs. The deal would be centered around Wuertz.

NO!

I had a feeling that's what the deal would be centered around-I really don't know how I feel about that.

I like Wuertz, but don't mind giving him up in a deal for a good regular. If you can deal away relievers for everyday difference makers, you have to do it. I just don't like Sheffield in that role.

Right team, wrong player. Stick Wuertz in a deal for Arod.

Shouldn't Sheffield (along with Moises and Bonds) be considering DH jobs?

My issue with Sheffield is that he'll want an extension, and he would be very difficult to trade with his NTC. It's quite possible that the Cubs would be on the hook for a guy who is no longer playing with the team because he is broken down, ala Bagwell. Is Sheffield a lock to provide more offense than Jacque Jones in 2007, let alone 2008?

With JD Drew now available, I'd be doing my best imitation of Hendry going after Furcal with JD Drew.

That's the thing-I think Sheffield has the chance to be that, but it's a huge risk. It would all really depend on 1)How Sheffield performs next year and 2)who the Cubs trade/bench to play Sheffield and how much they get for that player.

I'm not convinced Sheffield is going to be better than Jones in '07 either.

How many games does everyone think Sheff will play? Didn't Jones play the whole year? We'd be giving up a full time player for one who would likely be injured at some point...

*sigh* our options just don't look all that great right now....

More like a platoon player who plays full time for a guy who is likely to be injured at some point.

Sheff played in 150+ games for 3 straight years before last season. We aren't talking Bonds/Alou/Thomas as far as how brittle he is. Dating back to 1996, the fewest amount of PA Shef had was 549, and he was only under 600 3 times (not counting 2006). Last year's injury is a concern, and it's the main reason I'm hesitent about him.

But the odds that he outproduces Jones next year are outstanding.

I still fear that a trade for Sheffield will supplant Murton in left. If I knew getting Sheff would move Jones to CF or that Jones would be moved and a better CF brought in (Drew), I'd be more for it.

Wuertz and Jones for Sheff. Or if Jones stays, Murton gets time in relief of both. You need about 1450 PA between LF and RF. Give 480 to each and you'll be fine.

Not that I'm convinced it would happen, but what is the likelihood that a platoon of Jones/Jose Guillen or Craig Wilson or a comparable player could outproduce Sheffield?

Ignoring the likelihood that we'd ever see that happen, the odds are probably decent. But you can't assume those guys would only hit in the perfect L/R platoon. Plus, I don't see it happening at all.

Is it a little early yet to be expecting movement on some of these options? When's the GM meetings and the owner's meetings?

And Sheffiled ain't the player he once was, and his injury in 2006, willprolly be a precursor to a down yr in 2007.

And Floyd would be a better (and atleast chepaer) option for the #4 or #5 in rotation, over guys like Aaron Small, Carl Pavano, and Jaret Wright.

How's Sheff's defense lately? I haven't watched him much these past 2 years.

He takes some very esoteric routes to flyballs out there in right...

He's the worst defensive outfielder in the game.

Your way of saying it isn't nearly as polite as mine. Besides, Dunn might still be worse... maybe.

Agreed. I don't like the idea of getting Sheffield. He's old as hell, he's grumpy and now that he's off the cream most likely means his numbers will be inline with a baseball player as old as he is. Sign JD Drew over trading for Sheffield.

That bad?

If that's accurate, we'd better not be trading Wuertz for Sheffield. Wuertz is my choice for closer. 8)
