Fueling the Hot Stove...

On local Philly Sports Radio this evening, Howard Eskin said that Sheffield is going to the Cubs. This was in response to a Phillies fan saying that the Phils should try to swing a deal for him. Eskin sounded pretty confident too. Eskin has been in Philly for a long time and has pretty good sources, but I would still take it with a grain of salt.

Just passing on what I heard.

According to my roommate, who's from the Philly area, Eskin is a jerk who has nothing good to say and we should take whatever he says with a grain of salt.

I'd assume Eskin was just saying that because he was trying to say Philly was not going to get him.

I wouldn't mind Sheffield playing for the cubs, but he would just take away AB's from a potential all-star in Matt Murton. I would like to have a outfield of Murton, Wells, and Jones next year.

NO to Alou.

Although I loved Alou when he was in Cubbie blue just a few years ago, I am in no way wanting him back. He is old, will not play more than 100 games this year. He belongs in the AL as a DH.

I'll pass on Sheff as well!

Same here, I don't want either of them. Sheff is just one of those players I do not like.

I like players that help the Cubs win - I remember that whole "going with good guys" after 2004 didn't pan out so well... If Kim-Jong Il had a nasty slider I'd want him in the bullpen.

Why not as a starter? Durability issues?

Have you seen his skin color? He couldnt last as a starter in that summer heat.

If Sheff is going to replace Murton in left, I'd much rather Bonds replace Murton than Sheff.

Bonds is a much better hitter. Last season he has a 999 OPS. He's probably still a lock for a better than 900 OPS.

If the Cubs could get Bonds for under 10 million, it would be one hellova move and the Cubs wouldn't have to surrender any players like they would for Sheff. Like Sheff, it's only a one year move.

If the choice is Sheffield or Bonds, I'd take Bonds each and every time.

well yeah if we can get Bonds under 10 million i take him over sheff. Bonds though will probably command 15 million im thinking so if sheff is much more cheaper i take sheff.

Sheff is $13m plus talent in return.

oh ok well how much u think bonds will be getting. Most likely it wont be 10 million.

I think a lot depends on what teams think of him. I've heard everything from low-ball offers around 3 million to teams offering 14 million. Since teams cannot discuss salary figures yet, I think it is really hard to guage right now.

If Murton were kept around, Bonds' health liabilities would be minimized.

If the Cubs could get 120-135 games of 950 or better OPS out of Bonds in left, it would be worth the price of 8-10 million.

I have little faith in him staying healthy for 120-135 games. I also think his defense is a huge liability, but that said, the offensive production would be worth it if he could stay healthy.

But considering no one knows how well Sheffield will rebound from his injuries at his age, given equal dollar amounts....who is the bigger risk production and health-wise, Bonds or Sheffield?

I'd rather take my chances with Bonds.

I want Bonds as much as I want migraines. But, I COULD tolerate and his incredibly shrinking defense in LF, ONLY if the Cubs can land a CF with incredible range in CF, or atleast above-average range. If the Cubs could limit the amount of grass Bonds would have to field in LF, then PERHAPS he would be of interest, but if the Cubs don't upgrade CF, his offense contribution really wouldn't make up for his liability in the field. In that case, I would rather trade for he who wears a red uniform. But if the Cubs could land say Vernon Wells, or Rocco Baldelli, who could take pressure off defensively for Bonds, then signing Bonds, would be an intriguing pick up.
