Sheffield is problematic. He's expressed his opinions, so any team trading for him would need to extend him or they will be dealing with an unhappy camper.

If the Cubs get Sheffield, they will need to move Jones' contract or decide to move Jones to CF.

What if Jones is in the Sheffield deal?

With Matsui, Damon, Cabrera, Bernie Williams, and Giambi, I don't see much of a reason for the Yanks to want Jones. He can't play 1B and would just crowd their OF even more, unless they would in turn deal him for a 1B or pitching help.

I agree. I don't think the Yankees would want Jones. It's not like they are dumping Sheff since they could always decline the option. I don't think they plan to get much for him either, but at the same time I doubt they take back a player they don't want.

I could see an Ohman or Eyre for Sheffield deal happening.

My fear is that the Cubs acquire Sheff to play LF over Murton.

What about Eyre for Sheff? Then trade J. Jones to Pittsburgh for Mike Gonzalez. Get a lefty back in the pen right away.

No way the Pirates trade Mike Gonzalez for Jacque Jones. I dont see them trading Gonzalez at all anyways.

The Yankees are picking up Sheffs Option to keep him away from the Red Sox or Mets getting a huge return for him isn't there main motive.

I think Eyre for Sheff makes a lot of sense for both teams. Trading Jacque Jones for Mike Gonzalez probably won't work. But i'm pretty sure we could trade Jones for a decent left relievers. Losing Eyre wouldn't hurt us that much since we got Ohman.

Gary Sheffield will be 38 at the start of next season.

His numbers have been on the decline each year since 2003.

He played in less than 25% of the games this past season.

He'll make 13 million dollars next year.

I'm firmly against acquiring Gary Sheffield for the 2007 Cubs.

Reports have Sheffields deal with as much as 5 million thats deffered and would assume to be picked up by the Yanks. I was just reading Buster Onleys blog and he says some players that might interest the Yankees in Sheff deal are Wuertz and Mabry. No Joke.

Gonzalez is said to be on the block if they can get a OF with some pop.

I'd much rather have Gary Sheffield for the next 3 (assuming he'd force us to ink him to a 2 year extension) than Carlos Lee for five or Soriano for 6.

I'd do Marshall for Sheffield in a heartbeat.

From ESPN Insider Rumor Central:

. . .Brian Cashman has a potential deal in place if he wishes to pull the trigger, an official from another American League team told Newsday.

But Cashman isn't quite ready to make a trade. A person familiar with the team's plans said "there is no urgency" to the process. The Yankees seem inclined to wait at least a little longer with the hope that the market for Sheffield improves.

The Cubs and Phillies are believed to be among the most aggressive teams in pursuit of Sheffield, who is set to make $13 million in the final season of his contract in 2007, with at least $4.5 million deferred. The Yankees have until Sunday night to officially pick up Sheffield's option, and they are expected to do so shortly after agreeing to a trade, according to the newspaper.

more sheffield news via buster olney blog

Newsday is reporting that the Yankees have a potential deal for Sheffield in place, perhaps with the Cubs or Phillies. If it's the Cubs, a guy the Yankees might ask about is reliever Mike Wuertz, and perhaps John Mabry, who would bolster their bench and could play first base. If it's the Phillies, a guy who makes sense, in return, is the hard-throwing Ryan Madson.

You know it's a quality source when it has the Cubs trading a player who they don't even have anymore.

Hey, cut him some slack. It's not like Buster Olney gets paid to know what's going on in baseball.

It'd be great if we could pull off an Eyre and Dempster for Sheffield deal. We'd get rid of some dead weight and could come out almost equal salary-wise. Then we could trade Jones for a decent bullpen arm or a 3 or 4 starter. What would you think of a Jones for Hudson deal?

No way the Braves trade Hudson for Jones straight up. I'd do it in a heartbeat, but the Braves aren't dumb.

Why not? Jones would instantly become the Braves 3rd best hitter. If you factor in contracts, the Braves would be dumb not to trade Jones for Hudson straight up.

They want to get rid of his contract and he didnt exactly have a great year. But I did have a sever brain lapse and forgot about Jeff Francoeur...so that deal probably wouldnt work. But I wouldnt be surprised if he was dealt for someone the equivilant of Jones.

I guess I would be ok with Shef, he is a really good carreer OBP and OPS. But does anyone know why he played so few games this year? He IS afterall, 39 yrs old.

If the deal is Sheff for Eyre or Dempster, count me in.

so is it agreeded upon that jones would be the next to go if the sheff arrives? where to and for who?

I know that if we have to trade we have to deal from our strengths, the bullpen, but I don't see Hendry trading two relievers after he put so much emphasis on it last year. Though I wouldn't mind seeing eyre and his ridiculous comments, go. And chances are after the innings he's thrown the last two years and his laid back work out regiment, he's due for a bad year. I just can't see both going I could see a heilman for one of marshall, mateo, marmol plus Eyre.

Evidently ECB has not done its job...he had a torn ligament and a dislocated tendon in his left wrist that required surgery. It was originally said that he had a broken hamate bone after running into Shea Hillenbrand April 28th.

What bullpen arms would you be talking about for Jacque Jones?

I rather just keep Jones than make a trade for Sheffield. Cubs already have a lack of left-handed power bats in the lineup. I would hate to see a 07 team with just right-handed batters.
