On NYYFANS they're saying the deal in place is Sheff for Garcia.

I like Sheff being added to the lineup, but the Sox NEED to get younger, especially with the position players. I suppose it just gives Fields/Sweeney some more time and they'll eventually replace both Dye and Sheff in 08.

I could see that deal happening.

It'd be great if we could pull off an Eyre and Dempster for Sheffield deal. We'd get rid of some dead weight and could come out almost equal salary-wise. Then we could trade Jones for a decent bullpen arm or a 3 or 4 starter. What would you think of a Jones for Hudson deal?

What bullpen arms would you be talking about for Jacque Jones?

I rather just keep Jones than make a trade for Sheffield. Cubs already have a lack of left-handed power bats in the lineup. I would hate to see a 07 team with just right-handed batters.

Even if they were productive? The only reason you'd want to keep from having no LH hitters is if the team struggled against RHP. The fact is the Cubs struggle more against LHP than RHP.

How you swing the bat is much less important than how productive you are when you swing.

Why are teams offering real major league caliber players for a oft injured, ex steroid user on the wrong side of 40?

who also says he's not coming to a new team without a new contract

So you prefer players over 40?

He's only 38, but I definitely agree with you. I wouldn't be opposed to taking on Sheffield, but only if the Yankees paid say 12M of his contract. Otherwise, I'd stay far far away.

I thought the downfall to the White Sox this past yr, was pitching, and NOT hitting? Why continue to build a Texas Rangers esque offensive lineup, and limit your pitching option? You know the "outslug the opposition" theory does not work. Heck, even the Sox prove that theory. This deal makes no sense for the Sox (and yes, I know the Sox are trying to free up a spot for Brandon McCarthy). I wouldn't be surprise to see this deal take place, tho.

Garcia isn't very good, but he's paid like somebody who is (and is going into a free agency year). Their problem wasn't a lack of Freddy Garcias. Their problem was that Buerhle went from very good, to bad, in one season.

Buehlre wasn't the only one. Contreras went from very good in the first half, to below average in the second half. Garland was extremely luck (opp hit .290 both halves, but managed a mid 4's era. Vazquez was the only one pitching well in the 2nd half. It was a totaly rotation effort to NOT make the playoffs, with the offense the White Sox had. I know the Yanks are desparate to get rid of Sheff, but since they already know what Vasquez can do in NY, what makes them think Garcia will do any better?

Buerhle's 2006 vs 2005 was the biggest problem. None of those other guys were particularly special pitchers, so their more or less average seasons were not surprising. Trading Garcia isn't going to kill the Sox.

Mediocre pitching is likely to be very overrated this offseason, if a GM can find value in dealing away an expensive mediocre pitcher, he'd be wise to make such a move.

No, trading Garcia isn't going to kill the Sox, but on the flip side, getting Sheffield doesn't really make the Sox better. This move reeks of a move being made just to make a move. It's a lateral move AT BEST.

It could be a little better than lateral, but then it depends on what else they do. If you feel you have 6 guys who can start, but not enough OF production, it's not a bad thing to deal a pitcher for that OF production.

I'm not much of a Sheffield fan though.

Probably because there's a good chance he will outproduce the 30 year-olds who are asking for $15-$20 million per year.

According to the NY Post, the Yankees turned down an offer from the Orioles.

Link.

The Orioles, for example, dangled Kris Benson and a reliever, but were rejected by the Yanks.

The Astros, Padres, Rangers, Indians and Tigers have shown the strongest interest.

Notice there is no mention of the Cubs.

Shef could have a helluva year in the Juice Box.

I doubt the Yankees want Shef to stay in the same league, much less the same division...

Benson and a reliever is way overpaying for a 39 year old ex-steriod using pain in the butt like Sheffield.

Benson isnt exactly top-of-the-line, so unless its a really good reliever, I wouldnt consider that way overpaying. I think Marshall would have more value than Benson and I'd be willing to give him up, although I'd rather give up Eyre.

From MLB.com:

Yankees: Outfielder Gary Sheffield apparently won't have to wait until Sunday's deadline to learn if his contract option will be picked up by the Yankees. Several reports said the Yankees were planning to trigger the $13 million option Saturday night and begin entertaining trade offers from six teams, including the team that knocked them out of the playoffs -- the AL champion Detroit Tigers.

In addition to the Tigers, the Astros, Indians, Rangers, Padres and Orioles all have inquired about the slugger, who played in only 39 games last season because of a wrist injury. The Cubs may have interest, too, according to a source.

Among those who could intrigue the Yankees are Detroit pitcher Wil Ledezma, San Diego reliever Scott Linebrink and Texas catcher Gerald Laird.

From Rotoworld:

Yankees exercised outfielder Gary Sheffield's $13 million option for 2007.

The plan is for Sheffield to be fairly soon, but the Yankees are still waiting for the right offer after reportedly turning down Kris Benson from the Orioles. The Astros, Indians, Rangers, Phillies, Padres and Tigers are believed to be interested.

Now, we'll just have to wait and see what his destination is.

My prob w/ Sheff is less about his age and more about his 'tude. Will he shut it down and loaf if things don't go his way? I dunno, just asking.
