Alex Rodriguez-3B- Yankees Oct. 25 - 9:53 am et

Scott Boras says he's been told the Yankees will not deal Alex Rodriguez this offseason.

"Brian Cashman and I had a discussion and he made it clear that he has no intention of trading Alex," A-Rod's agent Boras said. "And I told him that Alex Rodriguez has a no-trade clause." Whether this is true or not, in terms of getting the best value for Rodriguez, the Yanks would be best served by not appearing to be desperate to deal him.

Gary Sheffield-OF- Yankees Oct. 25 - 10:04 am et

The Yankees are expected to pick up the $13-million option on Gary Sheffield and then deal him.

With much of his 2007 salary deferred, Sheffield will actually be a more cost-effective solution than the big-name corner outfielders on the market, namely Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee. By picking up his option, the Yanks will not only get something for him in a trade, but will be able to control where he goes.

If you read the Bill Madden article that Rotoworld alludes to, you will see the Cubs mentioned among 6 teams:

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/story/465014p-391288c.html

"Once the Yankees acquired Bobby Abreu from the Phillies at last July's trading deadline, it was clear Sheffield no longer fit in their plans, but by picking up his option, they can now get something for him. And it could be a nice return as at least a half-dozen teams - the Angels, Orioles, Cubs, Giants, Astros and Rangers - are in the market for a power-hitting corner outfielder, and that doesn't include the Red Sox and Mets. The Yankees can now prevent Sheffield going to such rivals, not a possibility had they let him flee."

If the Cubs moved Jones, I wouldn't mind taking a chance on Sheffield. Of course, Sheff has threatened retirement if he's traded before, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out.

I'm sure he'd want an extension. I'm not sure I'd want to give it to him.

Also from the article:

What makes Sheffield especially attractive is that much of his $13 million salary for next year is deferred, making him a much cheaper alternative to the only two premier corner outfielders on the free agent market, Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee.

Would be worth the risk if the price is right. That price being no more than a mid-level prospect or two. Although I would give up Jones for him if they would take him.

That kind of sucks for Sheffield. Not only do the Yankees not want him but they wont' even let him decide on his own where he gets to play. Sheffield brought it all on upon himself by negotiating his own contract.

Awwww...poor Sheff...he'll have to take his $13 million and play somewhere that the Yankees send him...

Trades are part of the business. A lot of guys don't get to decide where they play.

I have a hard time feeling too bad for the guy.

I'd take a shot on Sheffield if we could move Jones somehow. I don't want if it means he's one of two impact bats brought in this season. Sheffield has always been known for having one of the fastest bats in the majors how this wrist injury plays out will be a big factor if he is ever to be productive again.

Me too, he deserves the treatment he gets.

Per Rotoworld.com:

Upon learning that the Yankees intended to pick up his $13 million option for 2007, Gary Sheffield said he wouldn't be content either playing first base for the Bombers or getting traded.

What else is new? "This will not work, this will not work at all," Sheffield told USA TODAY. "I don't want to play first base a year for them. I will not do that." Sheffield wants to be a free agent so that he can get a three-year contract that he'll complain about in a year or two. "I don't know what they're [Yankees] going to do," Sheffield said. "Maybe they picked it up just to trade me. If they do that, if I just to a team for one year, there's going to be a problem." Sheffield could threaten not to report to any team that trades for him, but he doesn't have a lot of leverage unless he's willing to retire.

I'd stay away from Sheffield, now.

I'd stay away from Sheffield now, then and in the future.

Probably...but Putting him in right and then signing Soriano and sticking him in center would sure put an end to our offensive questions...

Soriano

Murton

Lee

Sheffield

Ramirez

Barrett

Theriot

Isturiz

Pitcher.

That line up would be pretty solid, and we'd still have $$ to sign a pitcher or two.

I wouldn't dismiss the possiblity...especially if its only a one year, or one and a one year extension deal...that would give Pie time to get ready and then you could put Soriano in Right....

Not necessarily. The guy is poison. He'll want an extension more than anything. He's been whining about an extension since the day after he signed his current deal.

On top of that, he's an old man coming off a season destroying injury. When he did play in 2006, he wasn't particularly productive. He's a great talent who had an amazing resurgence in his early-to-mid 30's, but he's fallen off a bit in recent years.

If you're an ass, you better be a lock to produce, or else it's not worth the headache.

I had been in favor of atleast exploring something with Sheffield, but after I read that article, I am in the group that wants to STAY AWAY from Sheffield. He is simply not worth it.

FWIW, and I know it's not worth anything, but the same guy in my office who wants to get rid of ARod, now wants to trade us Sheffield for Howry and Dempster.

Does he want us to throw in Zambrano as well just for kicks?

He wanted Zambrano for ARod, but is now willing to take back 2 young arms instead.

The guy's name wouldn't happen to be Brian Cashman would it?

I'm not opposed to Sheffield, but there are concerns about his defense and his ability to recover from injury. If he's going to bitch and moan, I'd look elsewhere.

Interesting, the same could be said for Alou.

Alou has always been known as a pretty good teammate. In fact, from all indications, he was a very positive influence on Ramirez.
