Pie likely could handle CF if Bonds is signed. He definitely has the range as his defense has never been questioned.

But the Cubs seem more interested in keeping Pie in AAA, then at the major league. So, I figure Pie won't be in the equation for the team until maybe June of 07.

Bonds in LF, Sosa in CF, and Alou in RF.

Thoughts?

I hope there's some sarcasm in there.

You dont like that outfield?

5 years ago I would have drooled over the thought of that OF. Not so much now

Offensively, couldn't be any worse than last year.

Defensively, that might be a different story.

I've probably missed it somewhere vance... but I'm assuming in that lineup you have Soriano at 2B, and leading off? Thinking of a:

Soriano - 2B

Barrett - C

Lee - 1B

Bonds - LF

Ramirez - 3B

Jones - RF

Pie - CF

Izturis/Cedeno - SS

Pitcher

Then on the off days for Bonds:

Soriano - 2B

Murton - LF

Lee - 1B

Ramirez - 3B

Barrett - C

Jones - RF

Pie - CF

Izzy/Cedeno - SS

I'm not assuming Soriano at all.

I've advocated looking into him. I've also advocated signing Alou for a platoon with Jones.

However, I'm not likely in favor of doing all of these moves. I just think it would be prudent to explore all options.

There's not a lot of talent in the FA pool, so the Cubs will need to be creative.

If I signed Bonds, I'd pass on Alou and Soriano. Try to spend on pitching and maybe look at Ray Durham at 2b or Lugo for SS or possible explore a trade for someone like Marcus Giles.

If I pursued Soriano, my preference is to use him in CF and still look to upgrade on of the MIF spots.

If I signed Alou for a RF platoon, I'd still explore Soriano or look at Durham as well. I'd probably still look to improve wherever possible.

I wouldn't pursue both Alou and Bonds. That wouldn't justify the risk, though it would still probably be a safer move than signing Jeff Weaver to fill a spot in the rotation.

Another classic Weaver picture.

A quote from that NY Post article:

Two different major-league officials believed Sheffield will end up with the Cubs or Athletics. The Padres are also in the mix, but the Astros aren't.

Wow. The potential for a Frank Thomas/Gary Sheffield clubhouse in Oakland has the makings for a great episode of Dr. Phil.

Don't forget Milton Bradley.

Reliever + prospects for Sheff, let Jacque spend Spring Training learning to play Center, find yourselves a center field platoon partner for Jacque (who preferebly can also handle a few righties if there's anyone that Murton would be better off sitting against) and you're done with your outfield!

I understand Cashman is trying to get the best possible deal for Sheffield, but to turn down both

The Phillies deal that included Gavin Floyd and a Padres deal that included Scott Linebrink, is beyond insane.

Everybody knows that Yankees are trying to trade Sheffield, and everybody knows Sheffield no longer wants to be a Yanks. So to turn down either deal, is beyond idiotic, and I hope they can't trade Sheffield, cause you know Sheffield will tear ANY chemistry that team might have to pieces.

Sheffield acknowledged he was Alex Rodriguez's sounding board last season. Asked who would take his place, he answered, "Nobody," a seeming shot at Derek Jeter and other team leaders.

Interesting...so Sheff was ARods only friend on the team. Bring them both in, sign Drew, win the Matsuzaka bid, trade for Heilman and M. Giles!

If that happens, nilodnayr, then I would believe in Santa Claus, again. I would love your suggestions to come through, but right now I see the Cubs gett

You suggestions Cubs suggestions:

ARod Alex Gongalez

Sheffield Jose Guillen

Matsuzaka Mac Suzuki

Heilman Kirk Saarloos

M Giles Aaron Miles.

What is so crazy about turning down a Gavin Floyd deal? Have you seen his numbers the last two years? He is not the prospect he once was.

I know the Yankees turned down this deal with Linebrink, but today Peter Gammons was on Mike and Mike and said that he believes Sheff will end up with the Cubs. The deal would be centered around Wuertz.
