I would rather have Soriano leading off. Soriano is more of a threat to steal a base than Murton is. Murton would benefit being in the 2 spot, because he has the ability to hit the ball anywhere on the field, and he makes contract the majority of the time.

wow, none of those things are particularly important for a 1 or 2 hitter.

Are you kidding me? Have you watched the Dertroit Tigers? Granderson gets on base, then Polanco moves him over with a bunt, or the hit and run. Works out pretty well for them. Whitesox used it in 05 also.

Yeah, so Polanco had 8 sacrifices this year. The Tigers also had 60 steals as a team, good for 11th out of 14 AL teams, with leadoff man Granderson, who must be a stolen base threat since he's a leadoff man and plays for the AL pennant winning team, uhhhh 8 stolen bases.

In the ALCS, the most impotant games of the year for the Tigers, 1 sacrifice. From Neifi Perez.

Have you watched Tigers? Polanco is batting 3rd with Monroe(who cant bunt) batting second. I know this has only been for a couple of games but I think it goes to show how important Leyland really thinks sac bunts and stuff like that are.

If getting Pineilla improves the odds of getting A-Rod (which I doubt it does) then I'm happy.

But put me in the camp of "I'll wait and see what talent Hendry brings in". Not even John McGraw, Connie Mack, or Casey Stengel could have won with the sad bunch that wore the uniform last year.

I cannot believe that Rothschild will be back next year.

For what it's worth, Steve Stone thought it was a terrific hire. He said he thinks Lou is the best talent evaluator as a manager that he knows. He doesn't think Joe is ready now, but will be down the road.

The score website might have it now, but I doubt it.

Too bad Lou didn't hire Joe to be his bench coach.

The best part of the hire is the bench coach-McLaren.

This might be the closest to having McLaren as manager as I expect Piniella to get ejected and suspended at various points during the next 3 years.

As much as Lou gets credit for being a great in-game manager, McLaren is usually the one that pulls those strings.

Lou is known as an aggressive manager on the bases.

Where is McLaren from? I have never heard his name mentioned much for managers positions, why? Do we have any possibilities for the hitting coach and such? I have heard Chris Chambliss name mentioned as a possibility. Why is he a good choice?

McLaren has been a coach with Piniella since his days in Cincy. He had interviews with Sea., TB, Cincy, and LA.

Are you sure, I haven't seen that reported anywhere?

No, I'm just going on what I read on page 1,2 or 3 of this thread? :D

But if it is true, I cannot believe it.

So for all those Piniella haters out there, what will it take for you to like this hire or at least think it was a good idea?

You have been around long enough to know that it will never happen. If he wins they will say that Lou had nothing to do with it, if he loses it will be all his fault.

Seriously, when will people stop bitching about this board? It's getting to be a friggin joke. The Cubs lost NINETY-SIX GAMES last year, how happy do you really expect this place to be???

Nobody said anything about "this board." Nobody said anything about how many games they lost either.

The implication was obvious.

And using the stupid rolleyes is neither original nor helpful to your point.

err...sorry. I wasn't impling anything, I was seriously asking. What does Lou need to do in order to be accepted by the fandom.

if he wins a world series he can play all the vets he wants

Paul Sullivan / The Tribune[/url]"] No Lou Piniella highlight reel would be complete without a shot of the fiery manager picking up a base and hurling it into the outfield.

That's the kind of intensity that made Piniella the most coveted free-agent manager this off-season, and that burning desire to win is why the Cubs decided to hand him the keys to Wrigley Field. Piniella, 63, agreed to a three-year, $10 million contract on Monday to manage the Cubs, with a club option for a fourth year in 2010.

So 3 yrs/$10M and a club option for a fourth year at $5M according to Cubs.com.

And from the Quotes You Couldn't Make Up Department.

After a two-week search that featured rumors Piniella was about to replace Joe Torre in New York, Hendry finally got his man.

"I really did want to do it with a clear head and digest it all," Hendry said.

It's been rumored, but there's nothing official.

And for UMFAN: press conference is at noon tomorrow.

From this article:

Piniella, who replaces Dusty Baker after the latter's four-season tenure in Chicago, agreed to a three-year deal earlier Monday, with the club holding an option for a fourth year. He has hired most of his coaching staff and has decided, sources say, to retain Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild.

Thanks, Vance. Not surprising, since there were indications that Hendry wanted Rothschild to stay on.

Thats our boy, concerned about his digestive system in the middle of all this.
