I think he's coming here because he thinks he can win. Why else would he come here?

Perhaps because he's old, it might be his last chance to manager, the Yankees job is unavailable, SF is too far and the Cubs spend a lot of money on payroll and employ lots of veterans. Lots of managers think payroll and veterans are the key to winning.

Aren't they?

It's pretty hard to hold Tampa against Lou. No one is going to win there.

Whatever gives you that idea ???

I feel stupid for just noticing this, because I knew the Yankees had 26 World Series championships, but I had forgotten that no other team was even in double digits. My hatred for them just grew...

Trying to stick to the topic... who knew lo' those many years ago, when I watched The Baseball Bunch as a kid, that one of the guests would be the future Cubs manager?

I wonder what that VHS tape would go for nowadays? *goes to search through tape collection*

Did ya notice that even after 60 years of futility, the CUBS still have the 5th best winning percentage in the game ???

So he's coming here because he thinks he can win.

I think it's one of many factors. He thinks he can win, location obviously played a major role.

I'll believe it when it's made official. ESPN 1000 is an awful radio station, they have no credability with me. What are they reporting on the Score? Now that's a good station. If, it's true and Sweet Lou has the job, I say fire Hendry right now! Joe Girardi is the right choice.

Check cubs.com if you want official. It's on there too.

I would rather have Soriano leading off. Soriano is more of a threat to steal a base than Murton is. Murton would benefit being in the 2 spot, because he has the ability to hit the ball anywhere on the field, and he makes contract the majority of the time.

wow, none of those things are particularly important for a 1 or 2 hitter.

Are you kidding me? Have you watched the Dertroit Tigers? Granderson gets on base, then Polanco moves him over with a bunt, or the hit and run. Works out pretty well for them. Whitesox used it in 05 also.

no, you're the one that's kidding yourself.

i don't understand why some people think bunting is so important for a #2 hitter. #2 hitters should be hitters that you don't need to bunt with. in fact, the entire concept of putting a hitter whom you have so little faith in getting a hit with at the top of your batting order is foreign to me.

you don't ask good hitters to bunt, when you do, you waste them.

the only hitter that you should ever even think about sacrificing a man over with is the pitcher.......or neifi perez, and there's no excuse for him being in a major league lineup everyday, anyway.

i am disgusted by jim hendry

seriously

lou piniella for 3 years, and bringing back rothschild?

mark prior isn't going to pitch again until 2009.

For what it's worth, Steve Stone thought it was a terrific hire. He said he thinks Lou is the best talent evaluator as a manager that he knows. He doesn't think Joe is ready now, but will be down the road.

The score website might have it now, but I doubt it.

Too bad Lou didn't hire Joe to be his bench coach.

so jim OFFICIALLY is copying the tigers now

whatever. i'm more interested in the players that come over. we could have done better for a manager though.

The best part of the hire is the bench coach-McLaren.

This might be the closest to having McLaren as manager as I expect Piniella to get ejected and suspended at various points during the next 3 years.

As much as Lou gets credit for being a great in-game manager, McLaren is usually the one that pulls those strings.

Lou is known as an aggressive manager on the bases.

I wondered when I saw the "Reign of Terror" graphic if it originated here. Good work on that Jon M. Davis. Here's a somewhat random comment from redsoxnation.net on Lou:

Not that it would've lasted anyway, but say goodbye to what's left of Mark Prior's arm...

I said goodbye to that along time ago.

The one thing I'm wondering, what does Lou think of .obp?

As long as he's never uttered the phrase "Walks clog the bases" I think he's an upgrade over Dusty in that area

Where is McLaren from? I have never heard his name mentioned much for managers positions, why? Do we have any possibilities for the hitting coach and such? I have heard Chris Chambliss name mentioned as a possibility. Why is he a good choice?

if you like piniella over girardi, fine. but to say that girardi isn't ready is just idiotic. the marlins put up a better record than the cubs with far less talent and fraction of the payroll. i don't know why the cubs' job is held in such high regard...the franchise is a joke. if he was ready to win 80 games with the marlins, he sure as hell is ready to win 75 with the cubs.

also, girardi did a heck of a lot more with the marlins than piniella ever did w/ the rays. and yes, i know the marlins were more talented than the drays, but i don't see any real evidence that piniella is any more 'ready' than girardi.
