Lou Piniella has been hired as the new Cubs manager per ESPN radio in Chicago. Cubs will supposedly have a news conference tomorrow to make it official. Unfortunately, per the same station, Larry Rothschild will be back as the pitching coach.

According to the report, it will be a 3 yr contract. Larry Rothschild will be retained as the pitching coach, John McLaren (?) will be the bench coach, and Mike Quade will also be a member of the coaching staff.

I don't like the hiring at all, but the fact that Rothschild is coming back makes it that much worse. :x

meh, lets give this dude a chance before we crucify him.

I will. But since he's going to be pimped as a guy who is supposed to offer the best chance to win now, then if they don't make the playoffs in 2007, all bets are off.

Somebody has to get behind the Hendry/Rothschild relationship. The only justification is if Larry made several recommendations that Baker outright ignored. Other than that, the results have simply not justified Larry keeping his job.

We don't even have to wait that long. If it is May, and players are making the same stupid fundamental mistakes, Iszturis is batting higher than 7th, then I'd say all bets are off.

The reason Rothschild is returning is because alot of the pitchers we have including the main ones (Zambrano, Prior, etc.) are fully behind Rothschild. Piniella is already familiar with Rothschild as well. Zambrano will soon be a FA and he knows he can get any kind of contract he wants with other teams. Z prefers Rothschild and it's why Hendry is probably keeping him.

The ONLY thing I like about this move (aside from the fact that I'm a little encouraged about the comments I heard he made in the playoff games about OBP and lineup construction) is that Piniella most likely wants to win now, and this probably means that the Cubs made him promises about what they're going to be doing and who they're going to be going after this offseason.

I look forward to an aggressive offseason and hopefully a well-spent 115 million dollar payroll, if nothing else.

Agreed. If we get off to another horrible start and players are still whining, making terrible mistakes and refusing to work counts, than this has been a waste. Hopefully, Piniella can instill some sort of attitude into this team to make them play closer to their potential and not bury themselves within the first two months.

Also, does anyone (i.e. Bruce) know if it's possible that he might hire Chambliss as his hitting coach? After what he did with players like Lopez and Encarnion, I think he'd be a good choice.

I wholeheartedly agree. I'll give Piniella a chance; however, Rothschild deserves no more chances. He has done absolutely nothing with our pitching staff. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

i hope Piniella brings us a championship. with that said, hendry now can get back to working out aram's extension.

hopefully aramis likes Piniella. i really don't want to see him with another team next season.

Remember back in the day when everyone attributed Matt Clement's success, along with Wood, Prior, and Big Z, to Rothschild? I'm hoping that a lot of the decisions made the past couple years regarding the pitching staff were Dusty's and not Rothschild's. Either way, I don't like him coming back. I'm just trying to make this somewhat bareable.

Rothschild? Unbelievable. I don't like the Piniella signing, but the fact that Rothschild is coming back is just inexcusable. What the hell has he done to earn another contract from the Cubs?

Awesome! Now let's start constructing the team. Lou is as good as any of them and comes with an expectation of winning. I'm back to being excited about Cubs baseball.

Maybe he was the one who smashed Sosa's boom box... :-k

Screw you, Cubs.

The only positive I see is that bringing a "big name" manager gives me the impression that the Cubs want to win now. I like that mentality. I reserve judgment until I see what kind of off-season we have. If we get a big name pitcher (Zito), and a big bat (C. Lee or Soriano), I like our chances.

Time will tell.

I thought that Baker was a big name manager and he didn't bring much to the table.
