thats all i have to say to that.

Well, thats disappointing but not unexpected. Oh well, lets put that $115 Million roster together and it shouldn't matter too much. If the talent is there he will be the Jim Leyland of 07.

I wholeheartedly agree - I don't like the move, but if they spend their money intelligently, I don't think it will matter too much who manages.

I really wish the FA market was better in a year when it looks like we may have the $ to spend on it. I'm very worried about the idea of overpaying for a Zito or Schmidt to a long term contract and not getting what we expect.

At least it will be a more interesting offseason than the 2006 baseball season was for us.

color me happy.

This means that the cubs are finally ready to win. No more grand schemes of building from within or whatever ploy they've gone with in the past.

The best thing about this is that if it blows up in their face, it'll only be a year, maybe two in doing.

I fully expect a big off season and I expect the Cubs to be major contenders.

Lou is not wanting for money. Lou doesn't need to make a name for himself. Lou wants a WS ring. He wouldn't come to chicago if he didn't think there was a legit shot at a ring.

Is the ability out there to build a winner through FA this season? If the Cubs got like Zito, Schmidt, Soriano, and C. Lee, I'd still have doubts of whether they can contend.

As mixed as I am about this hiring, that last paragraph is the most telling part. Lou wants to win and wouldn't come here unless he felt we could make a big leap. So I take heart in that, though that could be small consolation.

I agree entirely. Luckily it seems like the central is dropping off so maybe becoming even a little better might make the difference. But still...I don't see us becoming some huge World Series contender through free agents. It will depend, at least a little, on one or two trades we make.

Let's hope there are some equally good alternatives available after next season, when Lou forces the Cubs to release him to pursue the Yankees job. Unfortunately I think that's hugely unlikely.

Here is hoping that the report is true and Lou is coming.

I agree with BHogg, this move shows me that the Cubs are not content with the season they had last year and are very serious about getting back into contention next year.

Might want to fix that. :)

Good point.

can I drive the Lou BandWGN?

Don't expect a lot of company.

Sure, we'll start out with just a few, but there will always be room for cub fans ;)

I'll save you a window seat so you can keep building the autograph collection.

Funny, but it was just a few days / weeks ago that I was firmly against Lou.

He wasn't my first choice, but far from my last. I realize that he is very prejudiced against starting rookies but think about it this way.

1) This might be the last year for Hendry, I'm assuming that Lou is going to get a one year contract, so if we don't win this year, you'll see a complete regime change at least, and at best maybe even a new owner (Cuban anyone?)

2) Piniella is a much more fiery guy than Dusty. I understand that that fact is very overblown and doesn't mean much, but he IS an improvement, even if it is a small one. He also values plate patience and knows how to fill up a lineup card well. The one horrible thing that could happen is if Rothschild is reupped. We need a new pitching coach badly.

Same with me that I was completely against Lou. After doing some research into him, I'm fine with him. I wasn't actively rooting for Piniella to get the job (my top preference was probably Bochy) but I think that the commitment to winning now makes this a good sign.

Count me in as being happy about this! Looks like the Cubs want to win now, which means the rumor about raising the payroll looks to be true...

We can be the Tigers of 2007! \:D/

There's rationalism, and then there's being pessimistic just to be pessimistic. Say we settled for someone like Dave Roberts to replace Pierre (not saying he's worse than Pierre) and keep Izturis at SS, a lineup of

Roberts

Murton

Lee

Soriano

Ramirez

C. Lee

Barrett

Izuris

with a rotation of Zambrano, Zito, Schmidt, Hill, Prior would win over 100 games, that would be an absolutely amazing team. Not saying we'll possibly have that team, but saying you dont know if that team could contend is ridiculous. The Cubs were really bad this year, but lets not get EMO.
