Piniella can stomp his feet and yell all he wants. Jones will still make bad throws and get doubled off of second. Izturis still won't hit. Everyone will still run on Barrett. Cedeno will make too many errors, hit poorly, and not take a walk. Dempster will still walk too many to be a closer.

Freddy Garcia pitched 238 innings one year for Piniella in 34 games. So don't think he will ease up on Big Z.

115 million budget,if it happens will not make a difference if its not spent wisely. They paid almost 100 mil to the players and 4 mil to the manager last year to finish last.

If he brings Rothschild back, that will tell you that it is still business as usual.

That is exactly my sentiments.

I don't know what the negatives of Lou Piniella could be, but I'm definately aware of his positives. He's a gem and I'm thrilled we have him.

Piniella was not my first choice. But I'll give him a chance.

Of course if the Cubs pull a 180 next season the stat monkee's

will be hard at work spinning the fact that Lou deserve's no credit whatsoever.

If the Cubs pull a 180 next season, it will be because the team has a lot of better players than they did this season, and because they didn't get injured at the rate they have been over the last three years. It will not be because of anything Lou did - unless he's savvy enough to bat a Murton second as opposed to a Cedeno/Bynum.

And they will have a 180 million payroll.

Has anyone else tried listening to 670? I havent heard anything. I hate 670. It's 51% Bears and other football teams. 49% White Sox, .75% Bulls, .24% Other, and .01% Cubs.

Yeah, shame on them for talking about the best football team the city has had in twenty years - and the best baseball team in nearly a century (not to mention one that makes them millions of dollars for airing their games.)

Does it still hurt them to mention the Cubs, here and there?

Hub Arkush talked about the Cubs for more than half of his first hour. All the Score reported was that a source is saying that the Cubs are going to begin negotiations with Piniella. That doesn't mean that either side has made a decision. The Cubs could still open negotiations with Girardi if they don't like the direction Lou is heading with his demands.

The Bears are playing out of their minds, and the Score broadcasts Sox games. Hard to blame them for the coverage there. When there's Cubs news, they cover it. But how many times can they go over this when there's really no news to talk about? When I do hear them talk about the Cubs, I always hope they're going back to the Bears soon, because frankly I feel a lot better hearing about the Bears.

Not to mention the fact, if you work there, and there's Cubs news, you have to report it. Unless you want to travel down the same road Julie Sweica (sp?) did.

Paul Sullivan / The Tribune[/url]"]

Now that Piniella's commitment to Fox Sports is over and Cubs general manager Jim Hendry has completed his search, the announcement of Piniella as the next manager could come Monday or Tuesday, barring any last-minute snag in the process.

Hendry was unavailable for comment but as of Sunday night had not contacted San Diego for permission to interview Bruce Bochy, leaving Piniella and Joe Girardi as the last of the top-tier candidates.

Though Girardi interviewed well, the decision to go with a more experienced manager at this juncture in team history was one the Cubs apparently felt necessary.

Piniella's arrival also figures to spark talk that the Cubs would be a primary destination for big-name free agents, along with rumors of Alex Rodriguez, since Piniella was the Yankees All-Star's mentor in Seattle.

Hendry is expected to get a 15 to 20 percent budget increase in 2007 from higher revenue from the bleacher expansion and one of the highest-priced tickets in baseball. The Cubs will give Piniella all the resources he needs to win, because it's now or never for Hendry as well.

I did not say that building within is the only way to win. I said that we will not win a WS next year by signing Schmidt, Zito, CLee and Soriano. This is a proven to be an ineffective way of building a winner.

Who said we want to siwn Schmidt, Zito, Clee, AND Soriano? (which BTW if we did that, we WOULD win the world series, no matter how pessimistic you want to be)

Z

Zito

Schmidt

Hill

Prior

SS Theroit

LF Murton

1B D Lee

RF C Lee

3B Ramirez

2B Soriano

C Barret

CF Pie

You'd have to be OUT OF YOUR MIND, if you thought that rotation and line-up wouldn't depant, whip, and embbarass the ENTIRE national league and have a high % chance of winning the world series. OUT OF YOUR MIND.

But beside that point. We couldn't even sign all 4 even if we had a $200 mil payroll. It just wouldn't happen. However many of us beleive we have some strong youngsters like Murton, Hill, Theroit, Pie who could contribute. A CORE of Zambrano, Lee, Ramirez, Barret, Murton who are all very good. All you simply have to do is sign EITHER CLee or Soriano OR get one top player via trade -or- salary dump trade. And EITHER Zito, Schmidt, or Matsazuka and someone to pitch #4 like Miller. And even with 2 to 3 SMART moves like that you would still be under $115 mil payroll and seriously kick the NL central's azz next year. I'm sorry but you'd have to be crazy to think we couldn't compete if we made the right moves this off-season. .

Now this gives me some hope.

Misspelling aside, that's hardly the most offensive thing I've ever read about statheads on here.

I don't see how having Piniella as manager would increase the Cubs chances of acquiring A-Rod. He's not a FA. Hendry would still have to deal with Cashman and Cashman wasn't mentored by Piniella.

Its a no no to label groups of people. Might have been before your time, but a very active poster was banned for doing that (among many other no nos). Although at least he didn't call us stat macacas :) And seriously, I sing all my own songs.

I believe the thinking is that, if the Yankees were interested in trading him, it would increase the chances of his being willing to waive his no-trade clause to come to the Cubs.

It's beyond me how any of you can be anti-Piniella. This guy is a hard-nosed winner who will impart a winning attitude and discipline into our lazy Cubs. This man has won a World Series, for a team that was a heavy underdog against the A's in 1990. He was overconfident in taking the Tampa job, but they still showed signs of success in a tough AL East, with numerous players having breakout season in his tenure.

Maybe if Piniella had dropped 'VORP' 21 times in a press conference or something he'd be more adored around here?

Posted

Yeah I would like to know that, too. It seems a lot of people hated Lou...and now just because it looks like he's the guy, it's a "if you can't beat em...join em" kinda attitude.

I will say again that Lou is NOT a bad choice to manage the Cubs...he may even be a good one.
