BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

This sucks if its true. It doesnt suprise me though. Another dumb move by Hendry. He can take Lou with him when he gets fired at the end of the season or next.

I'm listening to 670 right now. So far, they're talking football. Maybe they'll re-announce it at the top of the hour.

color me happy.

This means that the cubs are finally ready to win. No more grand schemes of building from within or whatever ploy they've gone with in the past.

The best thing about this is that if it blows up in their face, it'll only be a year, maybe two in doing.

I fully expect a big off season and I expect the Cubs to be major contenders.

Lou is not wanting for money. Lou doesn't need to make a name for himself. Lou wants a WS ring. He wouldn't come to chicago if he didn't think there was a legit shot at a ring.

I don't get it - you thought the Cubs hired Dusty Baker to rebuild?

They've been trying to win right now, even though they don't have the capability to (weak team, limited tradable assets/poor farm system, weak FA class).

He wasn't my first choice, but far from my last. I realize that he is very prejudiced against starting rookies but think about it this way.

1) This might be the last year for Hendry, I'm assuming that Lou is going to get a one year contract, so if we don't win this year, you'll see a complete regime change at least, and at best maybe even a new owner (Cuban anyone?)

2) Piniella is a much more fiery guy than Dusty. I understand that that fact is very overblown and doesn't mean much, but he IS an improvement, even if it is a small one. He also values plate patience and knows how to fill up a lineup card well. The one horrible thing that could happen is if Rothschild is reupped. We need a new pitching coach badly.

I doubt very much that Piniella would accept a one year contract. I'm sure it will be at least 2 years and probably 3 years. I would doubt anyone would take a one year deal with the Cubs and all of their baggage.

I'll hold off judgement on Lou until about midseason or so. I'm cautiously optimistic.

The one thing I am encouraged by, and something that I've been clamoring for for quite a long time is that Lou is a guy who will kick a guy in the butt if needed, not coddle them like Dusty did. If he does it too much it'll blow up in his face, but if he holds guys accountable (gasp! a foriegn concept) and lights a fire under some guys, I think it would do us a world of good.

Hendry obviously wanted Dusty to return but there was no way he could sell it to the fans or media. So, he's going to do the next best thing and get an angrier version of Dusty.

Hooray for lateral moves.

And welcome back, Larry. Try not to ruin our young pitchers as much as you have before.

Has anyone else tried listening to 670? I havent heard anything. I hate 670. It's 51% Bears and other football teams. 49% White Sox, .75% Bulls, .24% Other, and .01% Cubs.

Just curious, why does everyone here insist Piniella is exactly like Dusty? and dont answer with broad generalizations or anecdotes I am actually curious to know the reason why

Probably the closet reason is his catering to "vets" IMO.

btw..I don't think he is another Dusty.

The TB situation was such a weird one that I don't know if I really think he should be judged based on it. Between being in the AL East, having a lot of questionable players up and down the roster, craptastic pitching, and having some commonly shaky/injured rookies, I think that would be a situation where pretty much any manager would suck wind.

The better gauges would be his time with Cincy and Seattle, imo.

iwas on my way to church, and it was on at the top of the hour....the sports ticker or whatever...but i have not heard it since then....maybe they spoke too soon??

Also those percentages are based on the 10 minutes of every hour that

are not commericals.

I don't get this "committment to winning" crap. Hendry showed that by not re-hiring Baker.

What Hendry is hoping for is some first year magic turnaround to save his job, by pulling an Ozzie/Leyland and bringing an old-school, angry manager to the job.

Well at this point why not! Might as well try something different...Let's face it the past 4 years the Cubs have become a bunch of cry babies.
