I got a couple things from that article.

1. Aramis is only opting out of his contract because he can. I think he, personally, is fine with playing out his current contract, but knows it would be stupid to do so.

2. Aramis will re-sign with the Cubs for less than 6 years. 4yr/$60M or 5/$75 should get it done easily. And I don't see why the Cubs would have a problem giving up that. Actually a 4 year deal still makes him likely to get another big contract if his body holds up, as he would be just 32 at the end of it.

I see a 4 yr deal as well with either a buyout or vesting options for 2 additional years making it potentially worth 6 years. ARam and his agent are squeezing Hendry in a vice grip. But it's Hendry's fault for handing them the vice grip.

Agreed, the last thing I am worried about is Aramis signing now. Larger, fish are ready to be caught. Let's go get a stud bat and a stud pitcher and play in late October come 07.

There aren't any fish much larger than ARam. I'm hoping your indifference is based on the thought that he will re-sign with the Cubs. If he leaves, Hendry has to get 2-3 impact bats and 2 good pitchers. I can't see Hendry being able to accomlish that.

There aren't any fish larger than ARam. He'd be the best FA hitter available.

if the cubs lose ramirez, adding one stud bat (who will undoubtedly be less of a stud than ramirez) and one stud pitcher will get them nowhere close to october.

So would it be a bad sign if i woke up tomorrow and saw that Aram filed for FA?

how about if he filed for FA, and hendry announced that we'd signed Geoff Blum?

I thought it's been reported that MacPhail was the one that gave him the out clause that caused all this trouble.

Here's Bruce's most recent take on the Ramirez talks.

Slow going: Cubs sources report slow progress in contract talks with third baseman Aramis Ramirez, but they caution not to read too much into that. Ramirez will opt out of the final two years and $22.5 million of his contract and become a free agent if the Cubs don’t re-sign him.

The Cubs remain cautiously optimistic a deal can get done.

I wish he could lend some insight as to why there doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency on the part of the Cubs.

Why is it automatically Hendry? How do you know it isn't Ramirez keeping talks down?

Things don't look optimistic on this front.

The representative for free-agent third baseman Aramis Ramirez said Friday no deal is close between Ramirez and the Cubs.

Bruce, do you think it gets done?

I can see it now. Aramis signs with the Dodgers. Hendry's other prime free agent target also signs with the Dodgers.

He lost his main target last year to the Dodgers while ignoring another guy that he could have easily retained. The guy he ignored also then signed with the Dodgers.

It's too bad the Cubs didn't have an out clause for MacPhail years ago.

Eventually, yes. The agent is doing a little squeezing right now.

Which isn't surprising. The Cubs did this to themselves.

I hope you're right, Bruce. Thanks for stopping by.

I really, really hope you're right on this. Tell me the organization values Ramirez as much as they should...

Yep. I believe you and I were the torch bearers for Nomar. I said in August of last year, I thought the Cubs should re-sign Nomar, go out and get the best players available, and then figure out where to play Nomar. If you re-sign Nomar before the Furcal fiasco, he's the fallback option at SS. If you are in a spot where you are forced to settle for Jacque Jones, you try Nomar in RF.

But that's old news. I am not at all stressed about Ramirez filing for freeagency. I'm more worried about the Cubs willingness to give him what he wants to stay.

It would be very Cub-like to not offer him market value.
