Yes, he is a productive player but my point is when he pulls a ball to the left corner and jogs to second and the left fielder is bobbling the ball I'd like to see him make it to third.

That is an odd desire to have for a guy. Especially since it's not a very risky play, for health and baseball reasons.

The Cubs already play aggressive ball and it kills them. I'd rather they be less aggressive on the bases, where they simply run into too many outs.

There's dumb aggressive and smart aggresive....I'm of the smart variety.

Yeah, it's nice to talk about it, but it's much harder to impliment, especially with slow guys. This nit-picking (Aramis doesn't leg out enough triples?) is baffling, and leads nowhere. I don't think much of tangotiger's poll of fans about defense, but somebody in there wrote something that made a lot of sense, about the need to stop focusing on every last negative, and appreciating the good. Aramis is a great 3rd baseman. You will have to work really hard to get a better one, and even harder to get that player as well as signficantly improve the team from what it already is. I understand the romantic notion of every player taking the extra base whenever possible. But it's absurd to expect it, or criticize a player on your team for not doing it, when all you are going to get from a potential replacement is more of the same. It's like complaining about guys who strikeout too much even though they produce. Sure, the ideal player never strikes out, but ideal is unrealistic.

That's my job goony, to have players reach their absolute potential. I'm not really complaining about Ramirez in the bad sense but I just want to take advantage of every mistake the other team makes, or as often as I can. So yes....I expect it. Will it happen every time? No.

I think Ramirez is a wonderful player and the best at third since Madlock...maybe better.

For the sake of the 2007 Cubs, whatever happens with Ramirez and the organization had better happen soon!!! Either we have a bunch of extra $ to play around with, or we lock him up and don't have to worry about 3B - whichever direction it goes, it has to happen soon or the team's hands are going to be a little tied in making other deals

I don't want to see this drag on and us lose out on some players when they declare as FA's.

Can someone point me to the thread where we talk about updating whether aramis wants to return or not, and progress made to get him to return. Rather than the Aramis hustling thread? I must have hit a wrong turn. .

Ramirez can exercise his opt-out clause and become a free agent two weeks after the World Series. Game 4 of the World Series is scheduled for Wednesday, October 25, so the earliest Ramirez can become a free agent is November 8, or 4 weeks from today. If Hendry is sincere about wanting to name his manager in the next 2-3 weeks, I think we'll know by the end of the World Series if Ramirez is staying or going.

What is Piniella's reputation regarding players loafing? I see some potential for tension between Lou/Aram.

He doesn't like players loafing but what manager does? Besides Dusty I mean...Plus, this RAM loafing is a bit played out. They guy puts up the numbers and that's all that counts.

I think whether or not we extend Ramirez will tell us if Hendry really wants to make a splash this offseason.

I can't imagine that Piniella is actually coming here if there was even a chance the Cubs weren't going to pay Aramis whatever was needed to get him here for the next few years. And I can't imagine Hendry lasts even 1 more year if he lets him get away. If Aramis gets away, it'll be because Hendry screws up, not because of any idea of letting him go.

He didn't put them up when it counted (when dlee was out early in the year) & that's what counts. The guy is a loser & needs traded for young talent that has character.

This is just plain silly. That is not what counts in a 162 game season. NO ONE stepped up when Lee went down, not pitchers and certainly not any hitters in May and June. I really don't care if he runs hard on easy groundouts as long as he puts up big numbers over the whole season. Lots of bad baseball players run hard on their groundouts and put .230, 6 hr's and 40 rbi's, heck that's what Girardi did.

Yeah! David Bell is twenty times the player Aramis will ever be! We can just sign him instead!

Hey, he runs hard on groundouts!! Lots of them.

I don't agree with you too often but we are definitely seeing eye to eye on this one. :)

I'm hoping he doesn't pretend signing A-Ram is just as good as signing a top-tier FA, thereby washing his hands of any bats on the market.

I Don't think we'll see that. If hendry has one thing well, it's keeping his own guys. But that 15 mil boost that the Tribune has given us means to me that we are going to see a significantly different team next year, and we won't be satisfied with adding a few extra spare parts.

So quickly we forget he was our best player in 2004, including down the stretch when everyone (including Derrek Lee) was absolutely terrible.

He had a bad month and a half. I don't see how that means he has no "charachter" or that he's a "loser".

Well, his hustle quotent was down almost 45% in that time period. His charisma took a hit and don't even ask about his hit points.

Aramis, don't ever change.

The Cubs have put contract extension talks with Aramis Ramirez on hold as they seek a new manager.

The team is hoping to announce the hiring of Lou Piniella as their new manager Tuesday, which will free up general manager Jim Hendry to get back to figuring out a new three- or four-year extension for Ramirez to keep him from becoming a free agent this offseason. ''I hope to move that back to the front burner this week,'' Hendry said.

"I hope" does not settle well with me!

The "I hope" seems to just be saying "I hope I can lock down Lou as quick as possible, then it's back to Aramis." It really doesn't sound like he's saying anything else.

Plan 9 from outer space continues. God forbid Hendry could multi task.
