Leadoff batters are hard to find. Pierre could be the Cubs' best option. Imagine a 1-2 combination of Pierre and Cesar Izturis in the lineup. That said, I don't know what I'd do if his agents ask for a deal similar to what Rafael Furcal got from the Dodgers (three years, $39 million).

as if thats good Carrie...

I just thought about it and I just got sick.

Trust me Carrie, I imagine that 1-2 combo quite often, in my nightmares.

"I don't know what I'd do if his agents ask for a deal similar to what Rafael Furcal got from the Dodgers."

ummmmmmmmmmmm......yeah......

murton should hit # 2 behind juan imo. izturis should be 7th or 8th.

Juan should be nowhere near this team next year, if we actually care about a productive lineup.

Ah, but he front office doesn't care. They do however have some nice official wrigley field bricks you can pick up at their website.

you are right. it would be impossible for a team with pierre leading off to get to the playoffs or world series let alone win them.

The question that the original post was responding to was asked by Ricardo G., who I assume is just Edward K. trying out a Latino pseudonym.

Will the Cubs re-sign Pierre? He's been the best center fielder we have had for a long time.

If "a long time" is "since 2004 when Corey Patterson did much better than Pierre in 2006", then yes.

when juan pierre was good it might have been possible.

I don't believe I said it would be impossible. It would be a bad idea though. Juan Pierre was a 25 year old making a million dollars when his team won. There's nothing wrong with getting the kind of production Pierre provided that year for that money. The problem is, as mediocre as that season was for him, he's been worse in 2005 and 2006, and, at 30 in 2007, will probably fail once again to regain his peak. In addition, he'll probably get paid anywhere from 7-10 times what he was paid that season, for less production, because there's always a handful of GM's in baseball who are terrible at performing cost/benefit analyses, Jim Hendry included.

And here I thought Edward K was trying out a new pseudonym with this question:

With all the injuries we have seen in the past few seasons, I'm starting to wonder if something on the North Side is putting the Cubs at a disadvantage. I think the pressure from the fans to beat the curse plays a role, but perhaps the Chicago humidity is unknowingly bothering the players -- or perhaps another weather-related issue?

-- Oliver W., Portland, Ore.

"the problem is not weather related."

well, she got that right. I think its funny that she talks about cedeno's fielding mistakes but doesn't mention his absolutely horrible season with the bat.

Of coarse Izturis will be in the second hole. Neifi is gone, but before he left they cloned him but things went wrong and Ronnie and Cesar were created. But Muskat has a point. I did imagine that lineup and I see us losing 100 games again next year.

With a 1-2 lineup like that the Cubs are assured of picking 1 or 2 in the draft. Where did the Dodgers bat Izturis?

In 2004, Izturis batted about 2/3 of the time at leadoff, and about 1/3 of the time in the 2 spot. In 2005, it was just about all at the leadoff spot. I'm thinking that they batted him primarily in the 7 spot when he came back to the team this year, but I don't have the splits with the Cubs and with the Dodgers in front of me here.

And they went on their hot streak after they got rid of him, interesting.

That explains why the Braves have been in the cellar all those years...it's the humidity! Oh, wait...

Pierre has had a better '06 than '05. It's really not all that close, either. With a young Murton in LF and a less than all-star Jones in RF, Pierre definitely becomes somewhat of a liability but that's not his fault. It's not like he signed the dotted line and said "okay Jim, I'll hit you 20 homers and have an ops of .850 this year." I think Pierre has done exactly what was expected of him. It's not his fault that Hendry failed to put together a better group around Pierre.

Pierre isn't this club's problem. Granted, putting Izturis 2nd is dumb, but make no mistake, the Cubs are 30 games below .500 primarily because the pitching has been atrocious.

This off season, if the Cubs only make one decent signing, I want it to be a top notch starting pitcher (preferably one with a healthy arm).

Before keeping Pierre, the Cubs should make many inquiries into the availability of Andruw Jones.

Jones would be great in CF. If that were to happen, I assume they'd go after a lead-off type at 2b.

It's not his fault he's not good. But that doesn't mean the Cubs should compound the problem by bringing him back.
