I don't understand why we're holding on to pieces that aren't in the future.

The reason is quite simple - we are the worst organization in professional sports.

Cubs, in a landslide.

Here's the difference why the Knicks are definitely worse. At least the Cubs have the chance to be better in the next couple of years. The Knicks can't for several reasons. 1) They easily have the highest payroll in the league, and yet it is filled with all of the same type of player-either shoot first point guards or too small forwards-these players are all signed for at least 3 or 4 years down the road.

2) They make the most ridiculous trades ever-they traded for Eddy Curry, and basically gave away the #2 pick in this draft for him, and probably a top 5 pick in next year's draft-so they can't even get better with their draft picks because they trade them away for too small forwards or shoot first point guards with bad contracts.

3) They just bought out Larry Brown for 40 million dollars-and they appointed Thomas as coach in his place. Even without the previous two, this point would make them a serious contender for worst franchise in sports.

But at least the Knicks owner stated that significant progress would be required next year or Thomas will be fired. One of the problems with the Cubs' organization is that nobody is demanding any accountability from anybody else.

The NY Times"]

The Oakland left-hander Barry Zito, the other compelling name being bandied about, does not interest the Mets right now. They have not had substantive discussions with the A’s in nearly a month, but if they were suddenly to become more interested, they would not necessarily need to include the coveted prospect Lastings Milledge in the deal. The A’s would start listening to any package with Aaron Heilman.

The Mets do not expect the market to crystallize until Sunday, when teams should have a better read on whether they are contenders or pretenders. The price of a starter should drop around then, too, with players like Washington’s Liván Hernández and Tony Armas Jr., or Pittsburgh’s Kip Wells (who pitched seven shutout innings against San Francisco on Friday night) possibly becoming available cheaply. Although the Cubs’ Greg Maddux could be dealt within the next few days, Glavine refuted a published report from Chicago claiming that he had tried recruiting Maddux, his former Braves teammate, to the Mets.

“I’ve talked to Greg and I’ve asked him what’s going on, but I’ve never tried to sell him on coming to New York,” Glavine said.

Yahoo"]Jul 28 Fox Sports Midwest reports Chicago Cubs SP Greg Maddux has agreed to be traded to a contending team prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers are interested in Maddux.

If we're going inter-sports here the Blackhawks are right up there with the Cubs .. and I mean 1a and 1b.

Paul Sullivan's take from the comcast roundtable: Maddux will likely stay. Cubs may be asking too much. Maddux not pushing to go, would be fine staying, but also willing to be traded if it's to a contending team. The Dodgers' disappearance may have ruined the best opportunity for trading Maddux.

Heard it too. Shucks.

I don't understand why we're holding on to pieces that aren't in the future. Why not try and get whatever you can for Maddux? The only reason I can see for Hendry not trading Maddux is that Hendry plans on trying to bring Maddux back next year, which would probably be the worst idea possible.

Then if Maddux does get traded "for whatever you can" half the people will be bitching that's all he got (see: Willliamson trade) I'm not going to defend Hendry/Cubs but almost all of the decisions he's faced with it's going to be near 50/50 on if he pleasese people or he's the biggest moron on the planet.

keep him = moron

trade him for little value in return = moron

I will go on record saying that if he trades Maddux, I will be happy that Maddux is gone. I will not care who we get in return. I though signing him in the first place was a waste of money, and I'd rather see some young pitcher get his 10 or so starts the rest of the way.

Besides, he isn't very good anymore. I have no interest in watching a HOF get his brains beaten in.

You mean the way the Cardinals beat his brains in today? :D

i dont really care what they get for him i think the cubs should trade him to a contender that way he can make a run at the series before his career is over. the cubs atleast owe him that, no use in staying here and ending his career on a bad team.it would be nice to get something of value for him but i just dont see it happening.

That outing just upped his trade vale enough to make dealing him worthwhile, imo. :D

If Rammy is indeed going to opt out, I want Ryan Braun or Andy LaRoche for Maddux if at all possible.

While I agree with it being nice to get Maddux back in the playoffs, he's already won a World Series. We did him that favor once already. I want something solid for him if we're going to deal him

Class comments as expected from Mad dog:

"I don't know what is going to happen and I don't think any player wants to leave Chicago, myself included, great place to play, great ballpark, great fans, great city. Aside how we're playing there is really nothing wrong with Chicago," Maddux said. "I don't know what is going to happen, but I just wanted to say thank you and let the fans know I appreciate them."

Maddux said he's open to a trade if it helps the organization.

"If (general manager Jim Hendry) gets the right players and wants to trade me, who am I to say no," Maddux said. "I want to do what's best for the team. I don't know what's going on. I don't know what's being said. I don't know really anything, but I do know I want to help the Cubs anyway I can and I would like to do it by throwing first and by going second."

There aren't enough players in the league like Maddux. He really is a class act.

Great comments, wouldn't expect anything less from Maddux.

Actually makes me believe that if he isn't traded he will probably be back again next year assuming he wants to pitch another year.

After this years pitching woes, even if Mad Dog goes in a deadline deal, I wouldn't be opposed to bringing him back next year with a greatly reduced salary, if he's willing to deal. And since he won't be our free agent we can negotiate much later in the year with him and focus on other things first. If someone wants Maddux so much as to grab him up, hey, that's life.

If only the great "Wood/Prior/Zambrano" combo hadn't been reduced to just Z, the Cubs would no doubt be contending and Maddux would be able to finish his career in Chicago.

*Sighs*

Thanks, Mad Dog. It's been an honor watching you pitch for the Cubs.

MADDUX: THAT'S MORE LIKE IT

A pitcher with 327 career victories shouldn't need a strong performance to enhance his trade value, but Cubs right-hander Greg Maddux entered Saturday's game against the Cardinals with a 6.03 ERA since May 1. He likely increased his appeal by pitching six innings and allowing only one run.

The Cubs are willing to pay a significant portion of the approximately $3 million remaining on Maddux's contract if they receive a quality return in a trade. One interested club wanted the Cubs to pay all of the money and accept only a mid-level prospect, according to a major-league source. The Dodgers, Maddux's most likely suitor, are exploring other options first.

Well, that is pretty depressing. A mid level prospect and pick up the rest of his salary? Might as well keep him if that is all he will fetch.

Why keep him? The guy hasn't been very good this year, I wouldn't expect a ton more than a middling prospect, although picking up his salary should help the return.
