According to Will Carroll, the Dodgers are the frontrunner for Maddux. Hendry is willing to take on some salary if a trade is made as long as he can get a "upside with questions hitter" like Guzman or Kemp.

If we could get Kemp it would be a great deal...(assuming we clean house with the coaching staff and don't mess the kid up)

Maddux just plain sucks now. We shouldn't expect a big return for him unless some GM is stupid or desperate.

I see no issue with Hendry holding pat on him unless he is blwn away by someone. Maddux (despite his bad 2 past seasons) has percieved value, otherwise teams wouldnt be talking to the Cubs about him. I think Hendry can and should milk it for all its worth.

Hendry wants booty!!!

I'll be suprised if he gets much booty. He manages his calories about as effectively as he does the Cubs.

If this is true (although his last two starts belie this), then there's no reason to trade him for a minimal prospect. What he brings to the team in terms of the clubhouse is not really worth a minimal prospect. If its a A or B prospect, however...

The Dodgers would be insane to trad Guzman, Kemp or LaRoche for Maddux.

Yes, but here is a situation where Colletti's utmost devotion (some may call it blind devotion) to Maddux could really work out in the Cubs favor.

I keep hearing the Cubs want 2 top prospects from LA.

I'm holding out hope that he's still got that lovin' feeling for Maddux.

Damn, two? They're shooting higher than I would. If I was offered Kemp for Maddux plus all the cash he's still owed this year, i'd take it.

in a heartbeat.

i gotta think maddux is staying. i don't see any way that the dodgers are that crazy, and hendry's foolish stubborness will keep him from dealing maddux for nothing.

C'mon, Ned. He's still got plenty of gas left. Then again, who is evaluating these as "top" prospects?

Posted

C'mon Jim, make this happen. With all due respect to Maddux, if we can get 1 good prospect for Maddux, you have to do it. TWO prospects from their very good AAA team, its a no brainer. I don't care who they are, as long as they are decent and worth playing for the rest of this year. Cubs fans need hope right now. Let's do this.

Also, its obvious no bridges are being burned in this situation. It seems that both sides want Greg back after his career is over for front office position. Its a longshot, but if hes been in the Cubs management for 4-5 years, when he gets inducted into the HOF....

What does Maddux bring to the clubhouse? 3 years of his veteran poise certainly hasn't produced the predicted mentoring effect on the other pitchers and if he stays he'll take away starts from rookies. And he sucks. At this point Maddux has NOTHING to offer the Cubs.

Please don't make un-founded black and white statements. Maddux far from sucks. He is a rental that chews innings. This is fairly desirable for many teams. Please go look at his ranking compared to many other pitchers for ERA/WHIP/well (He is in the top 30% of all starters for most stats) just about anything and you will see he doesn't suck. I have no issue if you want him traded just don't crap on the guy and act like he has no value.

a team in contention doesn't need inning eaters. that's about the lamest attribute a guy can bring any team, actually.

They do if they have a weak bullpen.

Everyone knows that the 40 year old Maddux isn't the Cy Young Maddux, but he has shown that he can still pull one of those Maddux-like games out of the hat. His last start was against a good offensive team (Cardinals) and he had them mystified. You put Maddux in a pitcher's park with a decent bullpen and offense and it wouldn't surprize me to see him win 6 or 7 more games this year. I think he is as good or better than most #4 or #5 starters in the league. Unfortunately, the Cubs usually had to count on him to be the #2 starter.

Resting the pen? The season isn't getting any younger...

Exactly. Plus, he has plenty of playoff experience, so a contending team would find that handy.

that's gonna have to be a really weak bullpen if you'd rather throw a guy with a 4.70 era out there for an extra inning instead of going to the pen.

i've just never understood the fascination with inning eaters. can't anyone be an inning eater if quality is irrelevant?

Maddux has value left.

Barry Rozner / The Daily Herald[/url]"]

So what should Hendry do?

Trade Maddux to Los Angeles, San Diego or San Francisco today.

All three teams were very interested as of late Sunday, and a deal could be done today if Hendry gets what he wants. One source late Sunday said Hendry was asking for a lot, for a top-notch, ready-to-play-next-year prospect in return.

And why not? If he has a marketable Maddux, he ought to hold someone up.

But Hendry shouldn’t put this on Maddux. He knows where Maddux is willing to go, so take the best offer and make the deal.

Then, go to Maddux and tell him it’s done. Don’t ask him. Tell him. Tell him it’s best for Maddux and best for the Cubs, and he will say, “OK, where do I go to work tomorrow?’’

The deal is there and it's up to Hendry to figure out how to structure it if he wants to get a decent prospect back (vs moving Maddux for other reasons, such as freeing up salary, opening a rotation spot up or "for his own good"). I do think that Maddux's reputation can be used as leverage, but perhaps Hendry can consider including a PTBNL type as cover if he targets a higher return.

They could if their manager left them in longer. :D

Maddux has a 14.9 VORP. That would make him a #3 starter for the Dodgers.

He'd be a #4 for the Padres.

His groundball to flyball ratio is #11 in all of MLB. That would probably be more helpful to the Padres than the Dodgers, as PETCO's park factor shows that it keeps a lot of flyballs from becoming homeruns, and SD's defensive efficiency is #2 in the league.

He would help both teams - LA needs pitching more than San Diego, but Maddux's game is tailor made for the Padres.
