It is blatantly obvious the majority of folks here hate this trade. All I ask is let's not focus the venom on Izturis himself. Give 'em a fair chance to see what he can do in Cubbie Blue.

For the record, I don't much care for the trade either but I'll support Izturis 100% in the meantime.

I hope the guy succeeds as a Cub and wish him no ill will as a person. Believe me, I want Jim Hendry to prove us wrong with this trade.

However, all indications so far point to the negative.

I think there is a strong possibility of this.

Meanwhile, kudos on the title of the thread. This has to be one of the worst trades ever.

best reason i've heard yet for the trade!

If only the Cubs had had a guy like this at shortstop in Game 6 of that 2003 National League Championship Series, they would have gone on to the World Series that year. Izturis would have vacuumed up that double-play ball that Alex Gonzalez booted and you would have never heard of Steve Bartman or a word about that bloody foul ball ever again.

downey also calls izturis a "beauty" and a "gem." he also says a shortstop like this doesn't come along every day and that the trade was "one of the Cubs' smartest manuvers of the century."

wow.

Well, it is only 2006 ... :P ... but sadly, there's hasn't been much competition in terms of smarter maneuvers.

This is awesome, too:

A couple of weeks ago, Dodgers manager Grady Little said of Izturis, "Even on nights when he doesn't get any hits, it's like he's driving in runs with his glove. That means as much to us as a guy hitting .350."

Then again, EVEN I could have turn the double in the game. It didn't have to take a GG to turn it, AGon simply lost focus for a split second, and turn a routine DP (I believe he should had won the GG that yr, anyways, and had not committed an error in the playoffs, I beileve). So that reasoning by Downey is beyond FLAWED. It wasn't as if it was a difficult play to make.

None the less his "one of the smartest manuvers of the century" is completely bogus. I won't EVER---oustside of this thread---put the acquistion of Izturis in the same sentence as the Lee and Ramirez. I don't know what kind of bonus the Trib paid Downey to write that column, but it is completely bogus.

This deal just plain sucks a fatty fatty ding dong.

I laughed out loud and puked at the same time. I hate Jim Hendry more than ever right now. After first hearing it was for Izturis I was pretty upset, and then I found out Izturis' contract. Now I come home to find that Hendry might have turned down a package involving Kemp or Guzman and I am considering officially switching my alligiences until there is a regime change in the front office.

Rusch + Neifi + Izturis in 2007 = $9 million

Dye in 2007 = $6 million

I made a similar comparison earlier in the thread, but looked at what could be obtained.

regarding Dye in 2007 -- he's a fluke. Williams got lucky. his signing before 2005 was no better than Jones signing before this year, with the exception that the third year was an option.

let's look at the OPS+ the four years before becoming a Sock.

109

105

41 (half season)

103

Craptacular!

don't hand out genius points just because our GM sucks. there is a certain amount of luck in things like this.

because every tribune columnist is an idiot

And it's not suprising for them to be seduced by his 2004 season and 2 Gold Gloves.

But mostly because they are all idiots.

This is a good post. I am in line with you. Lets get behind Izturis now and give him an opportunity to suceed before we run him out of town

The odds are stacked against him. He's doomed.

On the gold-glove-for-gold-glove exchange, the Cobs got shortchanged.

I am a Maddux fan, but it was time to move on and he was ready to move on. I don't mind Maddux's departure this time; I'm glad everyone got to say goodbye.

I do mind that Hendry purposely and vigorously sought out the same type of player he now seems determined to build this team around: a slappy no-walk no-power all-glove guy.

It's a miracle that he ever ended up with Aramis Ramirez. Somewhere along the line, Hendry got brainwashed into thinking that an all-defense all-batting-average team would work at Wrigley. That's why I'm absolutely pissed off about a trade that I otherwise would just be vaguely sentimental over.

I don't think there's anyone here who wants Izturis to fail. They just realize he isn't that good a player and that Hendry turned down "a package of top-level prospects" for Cesar.

Is there anything to that, or is it just a rumor?

He stated it to Bob and Len during the game. He said "two top prospects".

I've read it, I heard Hendry say it, it's out there.

He's proud he held out for Izturis.

I hear ya. But let's atleast give Izzy a chance to succeed. We're not going anywhere this year right? let's just all sit back, and enjoy our new player. Let's see if he is healthy and he can put up #'s closer to his 2004 year. He is only 26.

Now, both the Cubs and the Cards have an Izzy on their team.

He obviously spent too much time with Jim after he got run out of Beantown.
