Explain why keeping Maddux was better than trading him for Izturis? I really wish one of the many armchair GMs that are all over this site were GM istead of Hendry. I mean it must make a person more qualified to just read stats and post on a message board all day than to actually talk to other GMs and team officials. I'm sure Hendry's phone has been ringing non-stop the last week with GM proposing deals. And i'm also sick of people bashing Hendry no matter what he does. And to make fun of him by talking about him eating donuts, what are you people 5 years old. I can't believe how childish some people are on here. This is a good site and there are good conversations and arguments here, but way too many personal attacks on people.

Its easy.

1) Defense is not our problem.

2) Maddux's contract was up after this year, so his millions come off the book, we could spend it somewhere else.

3) Izturis's contract is in the range of $4-5.5 million for the next two years for production (both defense and offense) that is the same as Cedeno's who would do it at a fraction the cost.

edit:

4) we could have had one of Los Angeles's better prospects (who were cheap and have a WHOLE LOT more upside then Izturis) insted by most accounts.

How the hell do we know that we could have had one of LAs better prospects? Just because somethings been reported doesen't make it the truth.

Hednry's said twice already that the package they were leaning toward taking was for "top notch" prospects (plural), and then he said once Izturis was made available he jumped on the opportunity to land a two-time gold glove winner. Said it twice, in the press conference and with Len and Bob. We don't know for sure who the prospects were, but if they were "top notch", I would have guessed one of them would have been someone we've discussed before (or Will Carrol).

Thanks, I wasen't able to watch any of the game due to the fact that our power was out for 5.5 hours! Well, then I guess the rumors were right, but Hendry held out and got what he really wanted.

It is blatantly obvious the majority of folks here hate this trade. All I ask is let's not focus the venom on Izturis himself. Give 'em a fair chance to see what he can do in Cubbie Blue.

For the record, I don't much care for the trade either but I'll support Izturis 100% in the meantime.

This is a good post. I am in line with you. Lets get behind Izturis now and give him an opportunity to suceed before we run him out of town

I don't think there's anyone here who wants Izturis to fail. They just realize he isn't that good a player and that Hendry turned down "a package of top-level prospects" for Cesar.

Is there anything to that, or is it just a rumor?

Het, thats a nice jab. Who is it directed towards?

Steve Stone on the Score670 believes this is a good move.

He believes it's good to get Izturis a good glove who is locked up contract wise.

Also, he says it is better than if the Cubs would have signed Furcal at the money the Cubs offered in the off season.

OMG STEVE STONE FOR GM~! HE TELLS IT LIKE IT IS, CURVEBALL OUTSIDE CORNER!!

I'm now waiting for Pierre to get a three year deal. Pierre and Cesar bat one and two next year, I just don't know where Neifi / Cedeno bat - 8th?

Thanks for the sarcasm. It just seems that everyone on this board puts very little emphasis on the art of scouting.

I think scouting is very important

when you don't already have a 5 year major league track record of suck.

Or you have competent coaches who could fix a flaw that is identified by a scout.

Izturis sounded pleased when he spoke with Chicago reporters via teleconference.

“It surprised me a little bit,” he said. “I feel good. I like to play every day. The Chicago Cubs are a great team. I like the fans every time we play them.”

and you're a great hitter.

Joe Sheehan from Baseball Prospectus on the trade:

The Dodgers got Greg Maddux for free, dealing away the wildly overrated and overpaid Cesar Izturis. Correlation isn’t causation, but you can trace the Dodgers’ descent in the NL West to Izturis’ arrival from the disabled list: they were 14-21 between his debut June 21 and Sunday, the last game he played for them, as he batted .252/.302/.353 and got a ridiculous 30-odd plate appearances in the top two lineup spots. Every game he played that Willly Aybar didn’t pushed the Dodgers further back in the NL West. If the Dodgers got nothing back for him they would have been fine. Getting the current version of Maddux is a minor help. Losing Izturis, who’s just a glove playing out of position on the Dodgers, is a major one.

And we're stuck with him next year too!!! Great trade Hendry, you idiot.

And probably the year after that...

Izturis has to be thrilled. He's almost guaranteed to have his club option picked up for '08, when there is no chance the Dodgers would have taken it.

A comment on John Sickels' message board:

Izturis is a veteran form of current Cubs shortstop Ronny Cedeno. Other than 4 million in salary what improvement was made? It was said on MLB radio by Kevin Kennedy (An idiot) that Izturis' defense will help the Cubs. The last time I checked defense wasn't their problem, it was lack of offense. Well it does give Baker a chance to put a different guy in the two hole who can't hit.

Yes there was. The Dodgers loved him.

I don't like the move at all and wish we didn't have him. But people are acting like he has the same rep or value in the league as Neifi when he doesn't. Like I said yesterday, ML teams love 26 year old shortstops who have had 193 hits in a season, won two gold gloves and have an all-star appearance under their belt. It's the way it is.

I think the huckster Lasorda loved him, but I don't think Coletti did.

they loved him so much they completely squeezed him out of their infield plans for this season by acquiring mueller and furcal.

Anyone want to take wagers on when:

a. The Chicago mainstream media who is loving this move now begins to say what a horrible move it was.

and

b. When someone on this board accuses another member of "second guessing" the Izturis move and says "you probably loved it when they made it."

Neifi - Career BA is .270. OBP is .299. SLG is .379. OPS is .678.

Izturis - Career BA is .260. OBP is .295. SLG is .339. OPS is .634.

Neifi also had 193 hits in the 1999 season. Neifi also has won a gold glove. And had Izturis not been playing in LA he would never have been voted in as an all-star.

Izturis is Neifi's little brother. The one without power.

Looks bad, but I'm hoping this isn't the final move.

Exactly what everyone said after every move in the offseason.

It doesn't matter if it's the first or the final, it's bad. I'm certain it's not the final move. Obviously he's going to do more before April, but that's just the problem, he keeps making the team worse.

How is getting Iz making this team worse? The guy is one of the best SS in the league. Trust me we are going to love watching this guy...
