The Idaho Statesman[/url]"]Jeff Samardzija has pitched for the final time this season in Boise, Hawks manager Steve McFarland said Thursday.

Samardzija, who was the starting pitcher in Wednesday night's win over the Vancouver Canadians, is scheduled to make his final start Monday in Everett, Wash. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound right-hander will then report to the Chicago Cubs' Class A team in Peoria, Ill., McFarland said.

"That's the plan, for him to leave after the start if there isn't any setbacks," McFarland said.

Samardzija is expected to finish his season with the Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League before leaving in late July or early August for his final football season at Notre Dame, where he was an All-American wide receiver last fall. Notre Dame opens camp Aug. 6.

Sounds like that will give him 3 starts with the Chiefs, hopefully a couple of those will be at home and some of you folks can check him out.

Hopefully he'll take the well-deserving Jeremy Papelbon with him.

Fall practices for Notre Dame (or Nota Dem) must be fast approaching, and they wanted to get him closer to home, so when it time for him to head back to ND he doesn't have to travel as long. But I also believe that before he heads back to ND, the Cubs want to do one last evaluation to see where Shark stands with his talents. All in all, I'm not surprise at this move.

It's also a move to try to convince him to stick to baseball...moving him to Peoria (the MWL is his neck of woods, way more Cubs fans in the area, etc.) from Boise and the hot, dry high desert/mountain communities (apologies to Eugene, OR and Vancouver, BC) of the NWL which are 2000 miles from home.

Heres to "The Shark" having a really bad yr, and falls into the 4th rd or worse in the draft.

Here's to the Shark having a really bad year and Notre Dame finishing below .500 and out of the bowl picture.

why no Billy Petrick, argh, it would make our trip to visit him so much easier and cheaper.

Meh, happy that he is pitching well this year!

Hopefully he'll replace Samardzija in Peoria when it's time for Jeff to go back to ND.

Hopefully he'll take the well-deserving Jeremy Papelbon with him.

Being 23 years old, albeit a just-turned 23, it would be nice to see what Jeremy can do at a more age appropriate level. The guy has allowed 4 hits over 17 innings while striking out 19 and walking only 4. Its time for him to move, too.

Still, dominating the Northwest League aint bad for a 19th round selection no matter what age he is...

I'll toast to PSU starting them down that road.

From an AP article on Samardzija:

In his final start with Boise, Samardzija hit 92 mph or 94 mph, depending on the radar gun, while a small group of Notre Dame faithful watched in the bleachers. One fan wore Samardzija's No. 83 Notre Dame jersey and a Cubs hat.

He displayed two strong pitches -- a fastball consistently in the low 90s and a slider -- but scouts noted his fastball has little movement despite good location. Samardzija was pleased with the development of his changeup while with the Hawks.

Call me a bad person, but I secretly want Samardzija to get hurt tomorrow.

:(

Or at least a few key drops, a fumble, and many, many missed blocks. Oh, and 1 mis-run route that leads to an interception returned for a touchdown. But maybe that's just my dislike of Notre Dame.... :P

Seems like most people are predicting Samardzija as a 2nd round pick in the NFL now. Would the money for a 2nd round pick be pretty far under what we have already offered him to concentrate on baseball. Seems like a no brainer as far as the money angle is concerned. NFL contracts are not garunteed are they? I really hope he decides to play baseball, but he hasnt given any clues as to which sport he wants to play. Is he waiting until after the NFL draft to make a desicion? You would think his being in limbo might scare alot of NFL teams off especially with the amount of money he has waiting for him from us. Id love to hear more people's thoughts on this. I dont follow the NFL or College football with anywhere near the amount of detail and zeal as I do baseball, so its hard for me to see what the pros and cons would be as to choosing a football career over a baseball one.

Baseball has guaranteed contracts, but to get the big money you have to make it through the minor leagues with those long bus rides and staying in less than luxurious hotels.

With baseball, if he makes it, he'll probably make more money in the long run without as much wear and tear on his body.

On the other hand, he's closer to the "big time" by choosing football.
