Carays losing clout in Atlanta

ap.org[/url]"]Time Warner already sold off Turner South to Fox Cable Networks for $375 million. The longtime announcing team of Skip Caray, Pete Van Wieren, Don Sutton and Joe Simpson (along with Caray's son, Chip, a more recent addition) will be dumped from the remainder of the 58 Braves games shown by Turner South.

 

Bob Rathburn and Jeff Torborg, who were calling a limited slate of games on Fox Sports Net South, will take over the telecasts on Turner South as well. Van Wieren, Sutton, Simpson and the Carays will be relegated to radio and the 70 games shown by TBS - the superstation that once had the Braves as the centerpiece of its cable programming but switched to a more diversified format after Time Warner took over.

 

Rathburn and Torborg are among the worst in the business. This is quite an embarrassment for Skip and Chip.

They rotate the 4 slots. I was amused the other nite in Milwaukee when Skip and Chip were doing the game. They took turns doing play by play. The big topic of discussion was the Harry Caray Bandit who is apparently robbing banks in the Chicagoland area.

 

That being said, I hope Atlanta trades him to Tokyo.

Bob is getting better though... at least everything isn't an opening for him to tell a story about his time with the D'backs, like it was his first year. Now it's only an opening every other time.

 

In 2-3 years, this could be one of the best announcing teams around.
