I think I just threw up in my mouth..Hendry/Dusty Extensions

I didn't have much hope with regard to Hendry, but you would think that Dusty would at least be required to have some semblance of success (outside of 2003) to get an extension....

UGH

PITTSBURGH -- Speculation around the Cubs is that general manager Jim Hendry and manager Dusty Baker will receive two-year contract extensions next spring.

Team president Andy MacPhail chooses his words carefully, so when he told beat reporters two weeks ago in Denver that contract matters for both men would be addressed in spring training, as a matter of organizational routine, it seemed a clear indication that extensions are forthcoming.

With Hendry and Baker already signed through 2006, two-year extensions would give them until 2008 to find their way to the World Series. If the Cubs haven't taken major strides by then, that could signal the end of both men's jobs in Chicago.

I can't believe they're going to waste the window of opportunity they have with these starting pitchers (namely Z and Prior) still being somewhat cheap by having a complete imbecile running the team.

Plus these next couple years are prime years for Lee and Ramirez...

We'd better hope Hendry puts out a team so talented that Dusty can't screw it up... and that Hendry doesn't put any Dusty boys on the bench... Unfortulately, with Neifi likely on his way back (who, admittedly, would be a decent BACKUP if used properly), it doesn't look like that will be the case.

2008....

All we can do then is hope Dusty, and Jim get this team turned around :(

And people wonder why the Cubs have been the laughingstock of baseball for most of the last century.

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother.....

From the article.

If the Cubs haven't taken major strides by then, that could signal the end of both men's jobs in Chicago.

Shouldn't being progressively worse the last 2 years be enough? Shouldn't being a complete and utter imbecile and quite possibly the worst manager in baseball be enough to get his ass fired?

And Hendry FULLY SUPPORTS HIM!!

This will just be one of those periods where we talk about whistfully 20 years from now.... "Yeah, we had some really great players. Prior, Zambrano, Lee, Ramirez, Walker, and all in thier prime. But we had an idiot for a manager, and the best chance of getting to the WS in my lifetime went out the window."

MacPhail should get the boot, too, for even thinking about extending Baker.

By the metric you measure success, wins, we were better in 2004 than in 2003. In 2003 we just happened to play in a division with the mediocre edition of the Cardinals, not the Uber edition of 2004. It's only 2005 that has been a down year, and they will argue as such.

On the manager opinion, yes that may be true, but every team's fans thinks that their manager is the worst in baseball.

And I definitely can agree with that.

That rationale probably holds up when keeping them from getting fired, but getting extensions? That's just crazy.

I've been a Hendry supporter for a while...but I'm quickly falling off the bandwagon. I knew that he wouldn't fire him before his contract ended, no matter how many completely stupid moves he made. It would be 2 managers in a row terminated before the end of contract, not to mention the completely baseless, but inevitably present accusations of racism. If this rumor is true, I'm ready for the pitchforks and torches outside Jim's door. It is inexcusable.

It is one thing to realize you made a mistake and live with it for the agreed upon duration...maybe try to dusty-proof the team for 2006 and hire a more competent manager in 2007. It's quite another thing to be completely delusional and blind to the fact that you made a mistake.

I hear people say all the time that they players should be accountable and not the manager. I agree that the players should be accountable for their performance and certainly share the blame this year. But the fact of the matter is, Dusty consistantly does not put his team in the best position to win. Until he does that, I'm gonna keep pointing the finger at him. Yes there were injuries, but there should be positives from every negative. After Nomar's injury, we should know today whether or not we need Furcal next year or if Cedeno is going to work out. With Hairston going down, Dubois being traded, Patterson being sent down, and Hollandsworth being a bench player...We should know if Matt Murton is our starting LFer next year. We should have had one of the brightest spots of the season closing for us from day one, with Hawkins setting him up. Though we managed to turn that situation into a few valuable arms...it should/could have been handled better.

As it is, we have many more questions than answers. Murton and Cedeno have lit it up in their limited playing time...yet still don't get starts over vets with just miserable numbers. Despite what Dusty thinks, Perez, Macias, and Hollandsworth have just been terrible. It wouldn't be hard for a rookie to come up and perform at that level.

Sorry about the rant, I am just so angry and dumbfounded by this rumor. I really thought we were turning a corner in cubdom with Hendry at the helm. Until this year he seemed to have a vision, creativity, and the desire to build the team supplementing the core talent with a mixture of free agents and home grown players. Now he just seems like he got lucky with a few good trades and really has no clue what he is doing.

Ronny Cedeno will work out with coach Chris Speier this week to determine if he'll play second base of shortstop next year.

It sounds like Nomar Garciaparra won't be back for the Cubs next year, so they will need a shortstop. Neifi Perez will likely be at second next year. While it sounds like he's going to be a starter either way, it will be interesting to see how long Dusty Baker sticks with him. Baker, who is on the verge of signing a two-year extension that will keep him with the Cubs through 2008, is known for not playing young guys enough. Sep. 5 - 9:15 am et

Tell me, Hendry isn't trying to alienate as many Cubs fans as humanly possible? Tell me Hendry isn't trying to condemn any young player in the Cubs system? If this is true, the Cubs might as well trade Dopirak, Harvey, Pie and any other young player (with any value) because these youngster would have no value to Baker.

Plz, Cubs don't make the 2 yr mistake. 2004/2005 Cubs are the real team under Baker, not the 2003 team.

Well guys, Baker will be here for awhile. Get out your booing sticks.

I don't think it's true. Jim Hendry has a no negotations during the season policy. He'd wait until the off-season to do it. If he does:

We'll see the real incompatence of thi organization after 2007 if they let Big Z leave. He'll be FA and his agent is Boras. Prior is FA after 2008.

between this and the neifi thing, im thinking im just going to sell of my cubs stuff and not bother with those idiots one bit next year. i dont need this.

if dusty baker is given a contract extension, i will seriously consider doing the same thing.

maybe this is a "vote of confidence?"

i'm hereby rootingfor the Cubs to lose every single game until Dusty is fired... if that's for 3 more years, it will be painful

There's no way dusty takes this team to the WS.

If this is true, then I may be convinced that the Cubs will not win while owned by the tribune... which may be forever
