This is just sad--I'm beginning to feel like 2003 was the worst thing that ever happened to the Cubs.

1. The front office let go of the patient building approach thinking they were one or two steps from a World Series. (Previous point from Vance--right on)

2. The public and the front office thought Dusty had everything to do with the 2003 success. They blindly think there's a World Series around the corner and keep the seats filled.

3. Dusty "earns" enough capital to fill out the lineup card and use his pitching staff as he sees fit. Those who call him out (Stoney and others) fight (and lose) an uphill battle despite the facts.

It was fun to love the Cubs unconditionally for last two and a half decades growing up as a kid, but I've got better things to do than throw money, emotion, and time at an incompetent organition. I do enough of that at work!

I love baseball and the Wrigley experience, but I guess I need to go back to just checking the box score every other week for my own sanity.

The Cubs were a couple of pieces from the World Series after 2003. Upgrading the offense at 1B was good, getting Barrett was good, signing Mad Dog was good, and at the time, signing LaTroy Hawkins was a good move. He just sucked as a closer. Getting Nomar and activating Dempster were supposed to be the final pieces that brought them a World Series. People seem to forget that the Cubs were in the race down to the last week, and were only 1 game out heading into the final series. Part of the blame goes to Hendry. He let Merker leave, he traded away the Farns, he didn't want to give up Hawkins to get Dan Kolb, after seeing how Percival and Benitiz did this year, OK, it's good he didn't get those guys, but the biggest brain fart of all, letting ALou and Clement leave and still saying they needed to get rid of Sosa to get Beltran. The other part goes to Dusty, b/c he kept playing unproductive veterns instead of developing the kids.

Kolb has been worse than Hawkins, and Kolb is playing under what many consider to be the best pitching coach in the game. (7 losses as a reliever and a mid 5 ERA.)

When did regression merit a reward?

It must be fun being overpaid and mediocre, w/out the progression of an already declining farm system, we'll see that during the duration.

I'm seriously thinking of not watching a single Cubs game next year, even if they re-sign Nomar and he wins the MVP, Murton and Cedeno split the ROY, Z pitches 3 perfect games, and they trade for Manny.

As long as Dusty is the manager, they're not worth emotional stress.

If I do cave, I'll watch the games, but I won't get really passionate about it because I'll know the end result.

the players will just have to win in spite of dusty.

There you go folks. Today's 8th inning demonstrates the importance of a manager who has a clue versus one who has no business doing this for a living. Baker did exactly what LaRussa wanted him to do in the top half. Hairston got on against a wild pitcher, Cedeno bunts him over on the first pitch. Cedeno is the perfect canidate to work the pitcher, let Hairston take the bag on his own, or even use a hit and run. Don't we want to learn what Ronny can do in a game-situation ? We know he can bunt. Lets learn if he can hit behind the runner! Fast forward; LaRussa uses the same wild pitcher to walk Lee and bring in his LOOGY to face Burnitz. Of course, he gets Burnitz to roll out to first. Then, he has him pitch around Garciaparra to load the bases. Walker promptly flies out to center on the first pitch. Baker doesn't have aptitude to think 5 batters ahead in the ballgame. He just double-switches and pretends to himself that he's using some strategy.

Baker is an idiot and LaRussa owned him. Same situation in the bottom half and he has Nunez swing the bat with Eckstein on first forcing Novoa to face Pujols. No need to go any further.

I can't watch this idiot for 3 more years. I can't.

But Dusty makes that very, very hard sometimes. Look at his misuse of Remlinger, his obsession with Neifi, his refusal to play a rookie even if he's better than the established vet..... I'm not sure how much a manager can help a team win, but a bad one can damn sure help a team lose.

Hendry can redeem himself somewhat in my eyes if he would get rid of Neifi and Macias in the offseason.

I hope the media (please Bruce) takes Baker to task this evening for his handling of the game. They need to hit him with questions until he's so fed up he leaves the room or blows up at them. I want to read all about what this idiot has to say for himself following his performance on the bench today.

I've seldom seen the late innings of a ballgame managed any worse than Baker and any better than LaRussa.

The 8th inning shows why the Cards have the best record in baseball and why we have another off-season to try and figure out what went wrong.

Dusty has mishandled this team going back to and including the playoff loss two years ago.

Jose "Double Play King" Macias pinch hitting in the 9th with bases loaded was even more mind boggling.

I've always just assumed that if Dusty wasn't fired, the Cubs wouldn't even consider resigning him after his contract ran out. What a f****** joke. How can this organization be so stupid. It's amazing.

I'm not sure why "we'll deal with contracts this spring" automatically means "extension". I see it as meaning one of several things:

1. Extensions

2. "No Comment", meaning something may be done but not right now.

3. After off season analysis, they decide not to extend one or either.

Couldn't 'Deal with Contracts' mean a buy out?

I know that there are 60 some odd pages of maddening Dusty moves, but in all honesty there are a select few that I would prefer to Dusty. Dusty has his faults that have been well documented but there are strong arguments in his favor as well.

I really like Hendry though. He is a good scout and a creative GM. I would welcome an exstension for him.

well he can say something blatantly racist in the newspaper, in chicago, and get away with it. No wait the isn't positive either.

This club is a disaster:

Bad News Cubbies

Some guys missed signs, some didn't even know there was a sign, and some just didn't know what was going on. And the common refrain: blame your players. It's never Dusty's fault, it's never his coaches fault.

Same thing as last year. Nothing has changed. It was a circus last year and still is today.

Dusty Baker could have the 1927 Yankees team and find a way to screw it up.
