There was a report this morning on Chicago Newsradio 780 that Ken Griffey Jr. has cleared waivers and that the White Sox are interested.

Can anyone confirm this? Is there any place on the web that shows players who have cleared waivers, or is that a highly secretive thing?

I heard that last night on WSCR as well.

Should the Cubs be interested?

I guess that teams place a bunch of thier players on waivers just to see what would happen. I don't really think it's big news if a player clears waivers unless it's a player the caliber of Griffey.

I think all the pre-deadline talk of the cubs adding griffey was strictly a "push for the playoffs" move. In other words - even though I think it would be an interesting pickup - I don't see the Cubs even talking to Cincy about him . . .

The Sox need to get him or else they will be killed in the playoffs. The Sox should have traded for Randa before he went to the Padres. As for the Cubs, I'm sure they don't want any part of Griffey's contract (unless the Reds are picking up a pick chunk).

The way I understand it is that clubs put nearly all of their players on waivers after the deadline. That way they mask their intentions of trying to trade a particular player or 2. And if someone claims a player that they didn't want to trade, they'd just bring him back anyway.

On ESPNInsider, Steve Phillips did a decent job explaining this process.

I'll try to quote some of the highlights.

Players remain on waivers for a period of 47 business hours. (The waiver period starts at 2 p.m. ET on the given business day and ends at 1 p.m. ET two business days later.)

A waiver claim can be submitted anytime during the 47-hour period a player is on waivers. There is no advantage to submitting the claim in the first hour or the 47th hour.

Players who are claimed can be pulled back, but if you pull a player back, you have to wait thirty days before placing the player on waivers again.

There's a lot more here, but this is the part that I found most interesting.

Here's how it works

Starting Aug. 1, each team can have up to seven players per business day scheduled to clear waivers. (The commissioner's office is closed on weekends and holidays.)

Each business day, teams receive a computer-generated document which identifies those payers who have been placed on waivers.

Imagine the waiver wire as a fashion show where up to seven players per day per team are walking down a runway in front of the general managers. The GMs are looking at them, evaluating them and trying to decide whether they want them for their team or whether their competition may want to acquire them. During the 47-hour period in which players are on waivers, general managers are busy talking to scouts and strategizing about players

So, it appears that GM's can expose seven players per day. Since any player on the 40 man would have to be exposed to waivers to be used in a trade, I can see why GM's would try to sneak a number of guys through.

If a team claims them and the Mets/Yankees don't pull them back, the claiming team would be stuck with a lot of money for a lot of years.

Posada:

Posada signed a five-year, $51 million contract in February of 2002, and while it’s small potatoes compared to what Jeter, Giambi, Alex Rodriguez, or Mike Mussina make, that contract does carry with it some risk. Catchers age more rapidly than other ballplayers, and few of them are productive into their late 30s. Posada is 32, and will be pulling down $9 million, $12 million, and $13.5 million (including bonuses) for the rest of the contract, not exactly chump change. The Yankees hold a $12 million team option for 2007 with a $4 million buyout, while Posada can void his contract after this season. Given the slowing growth of player contracts and Posada’s attachment to winning, that has about as much chance of happening as the beatification of George Steinbrenner.

Pedro:

Updating previous items, Ronald Blum, of the Associated Press, reports New York Mets SP Pedro Martinez will receive a luxury suite at Shea Stadium for all home games and a hotel suite on all road trips as part of the terms of his four-year, $53 million contract. Martinez will also receive a $3.5 million signing bonus that is payable through July 2007, as well as salaries of $10 million in 2005, $14 million in 2006, $14 million in 2007 and $11.5 million in 2008. The Mets will defer $4 million for each of his 2006 and 2007 salaries, as well as $2 million of his 2008 salary, and will pay the money to him along with 5 percent compounded interest. Additionally, if he wins the Cy Young Award he would receive a $500,000 bonus for each year he might win the award, with $400,000 for a second-place finish and $300,000 for third place. Finally, he would receive $50,000 for each All-Star appearance, $50,000 for each Gold Glove, $50,000 for winning the league championship series MVP award and $250,000 for winning the World Series MVP award.

It's alot of money to Pedro, but I'll take him.

Teams don't bother claiming someone like Pedro cause there's no use doing it. The Mets will just pull him back and it'd waste everyone's time.

Also, when a veteran player gets claimed and pulled back, it might open trade talks in the off season if a team like the Yanks & Mets decide to switch directions and rebuild.

Then why put him on waivers to begin with? That makes no sense. Isn't it a waste of time on the Mets part to put him on waivers to begin w/ if they have no interest in trading him...........................

Plus it is a teams way of gauging who may be interested in which players. Kinda like the first feelers for a potential trade.

It is supposed to be a confidential thing, but like anything that is secret, someone always leaks it to somebody else.

From what I've read, Griffey would likely use his 10/5 rights to veto a trade to the White Sox. He's simply not interested.

Not really, it's been reported he actually approved the deal that was orignially "done", and would not veto a trade.

last I read Griffey was saying no one came to him with anything and until they do he has no comment.

Since those players being placed on waivers doesn't seem to be common knowledge, my question is this:

Is it more known when a player(s) is claimed and subsequently pulled back? Or is this information generally guarded as well?

i saw an article that stated just the opposite.

pretty much. I have a hard time seeing the Sox making a trade for Griffey. The Reds management is going to want an awful lot for Jr and I don't think the Sox are going to give the Reds what they want.
