The reality is Cabrera has the stuff to dominate, whether he can get hot for a few weeks is the hope.

He needs to be up for Shotas quick hook, especially when Civale isn’t available. It’s clear that CC doesn’t trust Rea either

Ok, thanks. I thought it was 10 days. Maybe I hoped it was 10 days….. I was really hoping he could take Shota’s Marlins start.

I still think we are missing the boat with Rea and Assad. I don't understand why Rea is in mop-up duty and Assad is in Iowa (I know there's still a day or two before he can come up, but somebody should have realized that and not lost him in this critical stretch)

If they can piggyback Rea and Assad on Shota and Boyd, and I never have to read the name Zeferjahn again, I would be happy.

Shota isn't going anywhere right now. Counsell always signals if he's going to make a move like that and he's been steadfast in supporting Shota staying in the rotation.

Yup, the best we can hope for is an encouragement to use his best stuff early instead of “saving it” for the third time through the order. If you give up three bombs, buddy, you ain’t getting a third time through the order.

 

Or maybe his haircut will make a difference.

Boyd was gassed. He barely got through the 5th inning. On a warm night he gave us all he had. If you push him too far when fatigue is setting in, the chance of injuries [ or at least going off form ] increases drastically. We need him for the rest of September and the playoffs. I know our bullpen sucks, but the days of starting pitchers throwing complete games have long gone. The dangerous teams in the playoffs have great bullpens [ think S.D. and Brewers ] but we don't, and we didn't make a serious effort to upgrade our bullpen at the trade deadline.

As I already said once now, I wasn’t talking about when the Cubs took Boyd out. They were right to do so. But if you read posts prior to the game, we had posters suggesting he should be in a short leash and if he gave up a couple of runs in the first inning he should be taken out. Or just go a few innings and get him out of there. Those were the posts I didn’t understand. I know he was gassed last night and had the Brewers not had 2 lefties coming up the next inning he might not have even pitched the 6th. I have no issues with when they took him out. My comment was made to those who seem to think pulling him early if he gave up a few runs was a smart decision. When you have the pen the Cubs have, you need the starter to pitch 6, even if he gives up 3 in the first 5 innings. The less the pen is out there the better.

Those comments were not to praise the likes of Zeferjahn, this iteration of Palencia, Thornton, or anyone else who typically goes one inning. It was more about better utilizing the guys who are being underutilized like Rea, soon Assad, and even Civale. They are being used in mop up duty or not at all. If we have one of them ready to go three, and if that means you can get better quality from Boyd and Shota going full out for 3 instead of saving their secondary pitches and energy for the third time through the order then 3 good innings of Boyd and three good innings of Rea is better than 6 bad innings from Boyd or Shota.

Thankfully, Boyd looked good. But I think having Rea ready to go 4 in Shota's next start if he gives up three gopher balls in the first is a good idea. And tell Shota that he's on a short leash, to use what he has early. Shota at 93 is a different pitcher than Shota at 91 on the four-seam. Last start, half his Four-Seamers were over 92MPH, topping out at 93.6. Just give me that half early and sit down. I know it's not that simple.

I completely agree Shota, if he pitches, should be on an incredibly short leash. I just didn’t think that was the case with Boyd, or any other starter. I also agree they need Assad back up. Until then, like you said, Civale and Rea need to be ready to pitch 3 or 4 innings.
