i think bullpens of doom can work in like, a short stretch run situation, but i have a probably dumb theory that these elite guys lose effectiveness once you move them out of the classic closer role.

likely it's just: bullpens are dumb and the human equivalent of babip. but still.

I stopped paying attention for a few minutes, popped my head up and immediately said to myself "Who the horsefeathers is Diaz?" until I realized it's just EDWIN DIAZ casually entering a game he's losing because the Dodgers are an all-star team.

rolison, ferguson, and kelly all have options, so it's not a guarantee, even though that's probably somehow too much length in the bullpen with rea, civale, and assad down there. there's a logical argument for sending him down because he can stay stretched out in iowa as the 6th starter while rea can't, but i think, especially lately, he's showing he's a better pitching than the kellys and fergusons of the world, and that's without really seeing how this version plays up in short outings. 

even if he stays through tomorrow, he's far from out of the woods, but wouldn't mind seeing antoine kelly get sent down instead.

My guess is that Assad will head to Iowa, though, tonight shows you what can be on the best of days. Baseball is brutal, and he's likely going to be a causality of "there's no such thing as too much pitching". 

But it's a tip-of-the-cap that we have gotten to a point, any point this year where we go "you know what? That guy who looked really good? We might have too many guys right now".

I think the feeling in the clubhouse matters enough right now that you can't send Assad down. He just beat Skubal and one of the greatest teams ever assembled in what felt like a statement game.

Assad really saved our bacon this year and bless him. He's really been the best version of a Workman-like Pitcher. We needed innings, and he got us innings, and he got us pretty decent innings. Hat tip, brother.

It's a numbers game and a business. They have to add two more SP's in the next handful of days. Assad has options and options keep guys around for a bit longer. 

But so do injuries. He'll be back.
