The Pads are a pretty middling team this season with a lot of holes. Can the Cubs keep the good times rollin'?

The wind blowing out.  Yes, score more runs, and we'll win.😃

Based on that bullpen usage chart, I think @Bertz's idea of a Shota/Assad piggyback looks like a really good plan.  Get 5 from Shota and let Assad finish to essentially get the pen a reset day, especially if sending Roberts down won't make a difference because of the 10 day window guys have to be in Iowa before they can come back up, which is an unknown for me at this point.

Liam Hendricks made his first appearance and pitched 1 inning with 2 Ks...

We're going to be seeing Hendricks and Pomeranz in August closing out games

😅😅😅😅

You just get the feeling we're going to end up with Pomeranz-Hendriks-Wicks as our 7-8-9 come September, and we'll all feel oddly okay with it.

Should be Canning for the Padres. Maybe he's getting an opener

Canning is having a Michael Lorenzen type season so not a good sign for the Cubs tonight.

Padres bullpen isn't in great shape either. It's probably less abused than ours, but multiple guys have gone 20+ last two days. I think they need innings from him.

Factor in the brutal heat about to be faced and there are four or five guys on there that could *really* use the day off.

Did Estrada's arm fall off?

I know it's a getaway day, but Wednesday is supposedly going to be the hottest day of the heat wave, and after last year's Bataan Death March Game against Seattle, I wouldn't be surprised if MLB announced a delayed start to that one.

Looking at that article, Thornton was one of the ones carried off the field.

I know Wicks had a moment yesterday, but I just don't see it.

This is the thing with relievers in general.  I've seen Anthony Rizzo pitch a clean inning.  It's possible to dodge bullets in  small samples.  I think the eye test becomes much more important when you're evaluating those samples.

Jaguar reports for duty!  Does that mean Matt Shaw to the IL?

Yeah probably Shaw to the IL, that's a shame Shaw had some runway and was producing

That said unlike last time Alcantara was up there are some actual lefty SPs on the docket over the next 10 days so hopefully he gets a chance to shine.

Yeah, my feelings exactly, I've got enough of a sample size of Wicks that one inning against a team that struggled all day with RISP is not going to make me think he's a candidate to be our closer.   And I'd be shocked if the Cubs even consider it for a second.

To be fair, I don't think he was being serious about Wicks closing in September.

That said, Wicks passed any eye test you could have asked for yesterday. It's the first eye test here past in a while, but he did well. Even the walk wasn't really a walk. Let's not forget, last summer this board was ready to take Ben Brown and shoot him to the moon. Justin Steele had his first good year at age-26. I'm not entirely ready to take Jordan Wicks and punt him into space.

I think I read somewhere that during his recent stint in Des Moines, he's gotten the K Rate to 25%, while maintaining the slug.  (Or maybe I dreamed it?). If true, let's get him some run against some lefties.
