I don’t think anyone would be surprised if I told everyone that the Cubs would be 41-37 with 8 innings from Horton, Boyd missing multiple months, Palencia with 2 IL stints and Steele hasn’t thrown a single inning yet.

Unfortunately no positive reinforcements coming from Horton or Steele and Cabrera will miss at least a month.

Hindsight is 20/20The non tender was fine at the time.  No other team wanted to trade for him.  He was a 2 WAR player. The DH didn't exist yet.  The team had too many Ks.  They brought in Joc who was a better player at the time and struck out less.

He'd definitely be nice to have on this team now though.

Hoping Mo can improve his swing decisions in Iowa and help us in the 2nd half

I agree there is a lot of hindsight on the Schwarber thing, what he is now - he just wasn't then.  He even said on the Lovable Podcast he flat out stunk at that time and he absolutely does not harbor hard feelings.  I'm not sure what they could have gotten for him in a trade at that time but considering he had to sign a 1-year - 8 million dollar show me contract with the Nats at that time showed there was not a great deal of interest out there for a guy that basically hit .200, struck out a lot and did not really have a position on defense.

I didn't agree then and still do not.  Schwarber was 27 and yes, had a bad, shortened covid year.   The season prior he had 38 bombs.  His PAs ended up going to Joc Pederson (94 wRC+, btw), Rafael Ortega, and Jake Marisnick.

They ended up spending more to get less.

I of course don't agree now, but I had no big issue then and if most are being honest they did not either at the time, Schwarbs was awful in the Covid year and many were very frustrated with the extreme 3-outcome guy he had become.

There were some like you who even at that time came out strong against it, but that number grows by the day, it wasn't really that high in real time.

I think they talked to Pete Alonso though.

Player A: .247/.334/.467

Player B: .228/.335/.463

One of these players signed a 5 year, $155m deal to be a first baseman/DH. The other is an outfielder making $20m who frustrates fans with his offensive output so much that they want no part of him next year and have occasionally called to get rid of him before then. They're the same age.

At this very moment Colin Rea is our #3 starter and I think Jacob. Webb is basically our closer.

I just spent an hour I don't have looking at prospect ratings/40 man/cubs pitchers at Iowa and Knoxville with sub 6.00 ERAs. There is no intersection of those three lists.

Not going to pretend he was good but 9 whiffs in a single inning from Murray is pretty wild.  There might be something there.

It is crazy isn’t it. You didn’t even add the outfielder has 4 GG to his name.

This is true.  Aside from the HR, he was kind of OK.

BTW, I'm so happy to find Dansby's wRC+ over the last 7 days (only 4 games) is 284.😄

Double header days are the best days.  And there's a chance we get Ben Brown today?  Feeling like this will be a great day boys.  43-37 wouldn't be bad, all things considered.  Although I wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs hold off on a Ben Brown start until they go into Milwaukee on Friday.

He’s too streaky. A home run in April that leads to a win counts less than one in May or July. The score keepers should only record a home run of his if they’re hit 4 games apart and preferably in the 9th inning down by a run. If it’s not linear then it shouldn’t count.

Yeah I'm pretty sure all the SP in Iowa have ERAs over 6

It's going to be interesting what the Cubs do this winter to improve the rotation.  The only guys coming back are Cabrera, Brown, and Assad, plus whatever Steele does, which they should assume is next to nothing just to be safe.

They also have to replace Seiya and Happ, plus Kelly is gone.

Have fun Jed!

Be ready for the Walker Buehler, and Eric Lauer type signings from Jed to fill out the rotation

So the situation at Iowa is definitely not good, but it's worth noting that the International League has about a 4.85 collectively and Iowa's park is a hitters park on top of that.

An ERA starting eith a 4 at Iowa is solid and anything starting with a 3 is frankly doing great.

Yet all I see are 6's, 7's and 8's
