I am not at all a professional athlete but I tore my meniscus (playing with kids on the floor just like him, actually) when I was 32 and the doctor was basically like 'we won't know until we get in there whether we can fix it or just have to remove it. if we fix it, it's significantly more rehab. if we remove it, you'll be at essentially full strength in a month but will have long term issues'. They fixed it and I was going to rehab 3x a week for 6 months.

depending on the severity, aren't these types of injuries like 4-6 weeks on the IL?

Well, there's 2 different procedures they do on guys depending on what they want the outcome to be.  One of them is a quicker recovery but leads to more issues down the road and the other is a more involved procedure that takes longer to heal but has a better long term prognosis.

I think it's 4-6 weeks of recovery, but I assume another few weeks after that to build back up.

I'd assume All Star Break.  This sucks.

I mean its Matthew Boyd, we were living on borrowed time.

Its a miracle it took him this long to get a serious injury. Dude is made of glass.

I would strongly consider this the sign that it's time to lengthen Brown back out.

But the bullpen's finally back in a good spot, and Thielbar/Harvey don't sound super far out on top of that.  We desperately needed Brown doing what he was doing up to this point, but we can probably shift back to a vanilla bullpen from here.  And Brown's proven his bullpen chops so hopefully in ~August he can shift right back to the job he's got currently.

Or, if Ben can perform well as a SP, let him start through the end of the playoffs.

The 2026 Cubs unlocked the secret of how to get the baseball gods to shine down on you and it’s to injure as many pitchers as possible. None shall stand when we’re done. Receive our tribute, O Gods!

That fine but hes been a valuable weapon to have out of pen, adding him to rotation, weakens the bullpen

Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd is going to undergo surgery to address an injury to the meniscus in his left knee. His current timetable is unknown. Manager Craig Counsell provided the update to reporters, including Jesse Rogers of ESPN. After Counsell spoke, the Cubs officially placed him on the 15-day injured list. Right-hander Trent Thornton was selected to take Boyd’s spot on the roster. Left-hander Charlie Barnes was designated for assignment to open a 40-man spot for Thornton. Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reported that Thornton would be coming up prior to the official announcement.

Here comes my pick for "2026 version of Brad Keller" Trent Thornton.

True, but it's pretty much either Brown or Assad.  I'd like to see how Brown pitches as a SP.  After Steele comes back, either Brown or Steele could joins the pen, depending on how they perform.

Gotta find a Brown,  Assad, Rea type from another team to fill the vacancy here until they can make a bigger trade in July.

Too bad Wiggins got hurt, we could of possibly gotten an early look at him.
