Some fair points, but they don't need 10 yr megadeals to sign a good SP.  And if they won't sign huge FA deals then they're dumb as rocks to trade talented hitting prospects like Cam Smith.

Jed is stuck between a rock and a hard place.  This trade is only about saving money.

This Cam Smith? Who is now a corner outfielder apparently?

Getting Cabrera could make it interesting later in season, if all stays healthy they will have options to move SP for a bat if needed at deadline.

The problem there is the teams who are willing to deal quality bats at the deadline aren't the same teams who will be looking for veteran SP help.

Bringing Tucker back now would make so much more sense than Bregman or Bichette. Unfortunately, I think that ship has sailed but I'd love for Jed to surprise me.

Well the good news is we probably land one of these big FA bats.  Unless Tommy just pockets the money again, which would likely result in a boycott of the 2026 season from me.  Go Jays!

if you look at pitcher war, the top 10 on fangraphs (outside of Gausman who btw i wanted us to sign or trade for like 1000 times no big deal) are all young SP on their rookie deals Im pretty sure. Skubal, Skenes, Crochet, webb, luzardo and so on. I mean damn, the only mega-deal SP in the top 30 is degrom I think. I doubt in the current environment Jed EVER pays for a top SP, I don't think it makes sense at all unless you just have unlimited money, and even the dodgers are taking a shotgun approach kinda at SP.

But since the Cubs can't develop pitching for horsefeathers, our only option is to trade bats for arms. Taking a shot at a top-end pitcher and only giving up (I know we dont know the package yet so kill me if im wrong) a locked-in-the-corner OF who may not even be able to touch major league pitching seems like a worthy gamble. Even if Cabrera completely busts, if all it cost you to try was half an Ian Happ, you'll never miss him. I will delete these posts if Caissie comes up and hits though.

This trade is only about saving money but Cabrera is significantly more expensive than Caissie and will be for the entirety of his time with the Cubs and they're now more likely to spend on a bat since they got a pitcher for below Market value? How does that make any sense?

They don't want to pay for a FA bat + FA SP.

Which currently available FA SP would you rather have over Cabrera?

I think a 2025 draft pick might be in the trade.

Hot take, but I think I'd rather lose Assad, Wicks, Long than that compensatory pick.

I'm just catching up on this. Finally getting a guy. Definitely a risk but he is something we needed.

If Caissie is in the deal does that mean Mo is the DH and Seiya is in RF and Alcantara is the 4th OF? Would be nice if we went and added a bat too.

Well I'd rather spend significant money on a bat than a SP due to the injury prone nature of SP.  We'll see who is dealt first to fully judge the deal.

I agree that spending significant cash on players age 33+ is problematic.  But then so is dealing away your young prospects.  Again, Jed is stuck in a corner with this ownership.

Sorry - I meant I'm guessing someone the Cubs picked last summer is in the trade.

Honestly this is a great guess.

i think sending mid-tier prospects with warts out for cost-controlled starters is actually a good use of resources if you're just completely opposed to 10+ year mega deals.

The odds that Cabrera bombs or misses a year or two with elbow injuries is not exactly non-existent, so I get that it could bust like that and even that it might be likely. But it's also very likely that someone like Caissie is just a bad-fileding 1-2 war guy for the time that he's cheap, and you can get those guys for nothing.

Yeah 3 years of Cabrera with what the return seems to be circling on means you've priced in a fair amount of medical risk.  And its risk this roster can afford to take, because even if one of Brown/Assad/Wicks goes to Miami there's still no shortage of guys to soak up starts at a cromulent level, but open questions about how many are good enough to start twice in a playoff series.

He's saying a 2025 pick that's already in the organization.

As long as it's not Conrad, I could probably get over it. but the meatbally part of me really wants Kane Kepley to be a thing too.

I like this move a lot assuming Cassie is the lead piece and assuming they spend they saved money on a big bat.

Losing Caissie's pay and gaining Cabrera's pay, they are now about 33 million under the threshold.  Go get Bichette!!

This trade proposal has really put a fine point on just how many people think Owen Caissie was going to comfortably replace Kyle Tucker

Him and every other pitcher on earth

Sure but some aren't actively having elbow issues with 3 years left until FA.  This could be Soroka redux.

But again, Jed is stuck in a corner. Even with Soroka I imagine the other deals on the table just weren't worth the costs.
