I see no need to sugarcoat it: Caleb was brutal. He was bad last week and he was even worse this week. Something is just not clicking. Is it possible he’s just bad? Of course! But I’ll repeat my mantra: he has this job throughout the end of the season unless he hits Justin-Field-week-6-literally-cannot-complete-a-pass-bad.

Anyone calling for Bagent has completely lost the plot. This season is not selling out all the breaks in order to squeak in a 9-8 record and possibly, maybe, slide into the playoffs. If that’s what you want, you’ll never see a championship and the best you can hope for are one-off seasons like 2001 and 2018z This was primarily a season to both evaluate what you have with Caleb and to coach him up. He’s moving backwards. It’s time for Ben Johnson to coach him up. Nobody is getting benched, nor should they. (Again, unless he is so bad he puts up negative passing yardage)

If you need a QB to be that bad before you bench him you have no standards and no chance at success

Starting Bagent for ??? Reasons is having no standards. It accomplishes nothing. He has no shot at all at being a starting quarterback in the league so it serves no purpose.

You start Williams in the hopes that he actually can be a franchise QB. It’s the prerequisite to having a championship quality team. If he isn’t, that’s too bad, but it’s the only thing that matters. Any stopgap is just wasting time.

I don’t care about Bagent. He’s probably no good. But if you wait until Caleb goes negative yardage before benching him then there is no point of playing NFL football games.

he’s been awful. He wasn’t good last year and he’s getting worse, with plenty of support around him. This isn’t week 3. We’re in week 9 of the season. He had a terrible training camp and preseason. He has been subpar all season and he’s sinking fast. BJ has done his best work with  a has been and odds are he’s gonna have to find a new one. They probably can’t go 2 more weeks with this level of ineptitude before losing the room. Caleb has to sit soon. Bagent doesn’t matter. Holding your QB to a standard of not being awful does matter.

Yeah at this point I’m just leaving it in the hands of our head coach, who I trust knows how to evaluate whether Caleb should remain the starter.  I’m not liking a lot of things I see from Caleb but I have no idea what BJ is seeing in terms of big picture.

I'm certain Ben isn't liking some things either though, as you said, he knows far more than any of us about what's not working and why.

Honestly don't understand any of this. These are talented pass catchers on this team and this offense is sputtering badly. To be so misled after what looked like an amazing opening series until it turned into a field goa is beyond poopy. If you are going to suck, suck from play 1 and stop teasing me.

I was just talking with my brother about this.  Both of us feel like there’s a good chance guys are open and Caleb isn’t seeing those guys.  But admittedly I don’t watch game film that much.  There’s solid talent at WR on this team.  And Caleb has enough time.  I’d be shocked if guys aren’t getting open.

Your gut isn’t lying.

I saw a stat this week showing where each of our top 3 WR rank in separation % and it was something like:

DJ - 14th

Zacheus - 48th

Rome - 116th

So he targets the hell out of his classmate, who has sucked at getting good separation, and he's used DJ almost as his 3rd read, inexplicably.

DJ Moore is by far our best receiver and the offense should run through him IMO.

It’s risky and even reckless to to invest 2 top 10 picks and pick 39 on pass catchers who are only as effective as the guy throwing the football, especially with an already deep unit. There’s needs everywhere, especially on the defensive line.

Me neither.  I didn't like the hire when they first hired him.  His San Fran unit was one of the worst in the league and if I remember correctly, were getting worse each year.  I was looking forward to him being replaced this year.  There were rumors they were looking into the Saints guy, but maybe when that fell through, they just kept him because of a lack of options.

The reasoning I heard at the time of Ben Johnson's hire, was that he wanted to keep a coach around who was informed on the current players on the roster.

Like okay but if the guy's not a great coach that shouldn't matter.

"Let’s get right to the moment where everything unraveled. Down 16–13 in the fourth quarter and backed up at their own 4-yard line, Caleb Williams took a shot he doesn’t regret taking — but absolutely regrets how he placed it. He had Rome Odunze flashing across the middle, said he liked the read, and let it rip. But the ball wasn’t outside enough. Ravens corner Nate Wiggins undercut it, picked it at the 18, and Baltimore needed only 47 seconds to punch in a short touchdown drive for a 10-point swing. Game tilted. Belief leaked. And the Bears never recovered.

It was a good read,” Williams said afterward. “I could have led him farther out in front instead of giving him a shot right here. The DB made a great break. Unfortunate with where we were on the field.”

Head coach Ben Johnson wasn’t as forgiving: “There might have been another option we could have gotten to.”"

Monongai was wide horsefeathers open for a dump off on the pick.  Like there wasn't anyone within 10 yards of him.  That was such a late/off target pass I have no idea what Caleb was doing there.

Caleb is definitely ultra-focusing on Odunze as a safety blanket and it’s hurting him and the passing game. I hope they can coach him up to not hyper focus on just the one guy and god, hopefully spread it around a bit more when it’s a high pressure moment or scramble drill time.

horsefeathers I hate how familiar it feels going onto social media on a Monday and reading tons of "I watched the film and it's not as bad as I initially thought" takes.  Even if true, I feel like we've been in this cycle for years.

Yeah, it's getting really tiresome.  All we can do is look to next week, there's no reason not expect an improved offensive performance.  Bears will be facing another terrible defense, there has got be an uptick in the offense, no excuses at all.

I think these QB School Youtube Guys make their living simply telling fans what they want to hear about QB prospects.

No need to polish a turd, Caleb was bad.

his numbers last season and this season aren't much better than Caleb's. he was not a whiff by the bears

Are we just going to pretend that the Giants kicker in part allowed the comeback?

Still gotta score 33 in the 4th quarter to win that game.

him and maye were brought up because of caleb's struggles. maye is relevant because he wouldn't have been a huge stretch at 1.1. I don't see how nix is relevant

I was implying that Nix has been good, because he has. The Bears weren't reaching on him at #1. Only Daniels and Maye would have been in that conversation. But, if we're putting them in tiers based on where they are right now, it's this:

Tier 1: Daniels and Maye

Tier 2: Williams and Nix

Tier 3: Penix

Tier 4: McCarthy
