In a reply, he mentions Crochet to Cubs, Hoerner to Seattle. Prospects to Sox

If true this is interesting. But if Hoerner goes I doubt Shaw is in the deal too.

I'm prepared to be annoyed at how much may need to be added to functionally trade Nico for Crochet, and I'd still be quite worried about how it plays out, but that's a fascinating framework.  For as much as I don't want to lose Nico, I do think it's easier to bridge that gap to Shaw than it is to find a pitcher with Crochet's ceiling/salary combination.

Probably. Still an interesting idea. Maybe the Mariners have to come up with a prospect to give the Sox. Then Cubs deal 2 prospects instead of 3. Doubt Shaw is one of them. But maybe Triantos, Alcantara or Cassie is the top guy.

I don’t want to lose Nico either. But if you can get a TOR starter by dealing him and 2 solid prospects you have to at least consider it. As you said the difference between who they put at 2nd (probably Shaw)and Crochet versus Hoerner and Assad is pretty substantial. Besides that, if they really wanted to they could look into trading for Lowe to take second. Then if they deal Bellinger there is still a spot for a prospect to fill in the line up.

Not quite, but he's way stepped up the rumor mongering recently which sets off alarm bells in my brain.

Apparently he’s a contributor at this very site! No idea what kind of connections he has.

Interesting idea though. Crochet, Steele, Shota, Taillon, Boyd is a fascinating rotation. I know pitch shape has taken over handedness, but my lizard brain still can’t comprehend a rotation with four lefties.

And that's with picking up like...$7m in cap space.

  • Lineup: Happ/Seiya/Cody/Busch/Paredes/Shaw/Swanson/PCA/Amaya. Bench is....very unsettled
  • Pitching: Crochet/Steele/Shota/Taillon/Boyd and last years bullpen

Fangraphs has our total number at $201m right now with the first lux tax cap at $241. Let's say the number is $230m internally for whatever reason, going from Nico's $11.5m to Crochet's $3m is another $8.5 and so we'd be at roughly $37.5m to address the bullpen/catcher/bench. Would be fine going cheap on catcher (and maybe bench) and going to get a high quality bench to go back to the discussed 10 guys/9 spots arrangement, but gives you some flexibility. Depending, of course, on what other prospects would be included.

I like it! Nico, Wicks, Caissie.

Too much for me, I think. Cubs are going from Assad (1) to Crochet (4.5) and then from Hoerner (4) to Shaw (1.5?)*. Wicks and Caissie is a lot for a win. I think Caissie becomes more important in a post Hoerner world where there's less uncertainty about offensive production (ie if Shaw falls on his face), and a rotation where 60% of it is Crochet/Steele/Boyd still needs plenty of depth. Would rather let them figure out Ballesteros or else go further down the minor league rungs since the Sox aren't close to contention.

*Plus roughly $15m in cap space over the next two years.

Edit: Said another way, we've got a 2 year window right now and the Sox very clearly don't, so I would prioritize keeping pieces who can provide help in that window (Caissie, Wicks, Horton) and try to sell them on Cam Smith, Jaxon Wiggins, Christian Hernandez, etc.

While it's exciting, if they were to move both Nico and Bellinger this offseason, that opens up a heck of a lot of work to be done on the offensive side of the team.

How does a high school kid (jacob) get 3000 followers? Has he broken any insider info on his own?

Edit: college sophomore/high school baseball announcer.

But my question remains: what news has he ever broken to be considered an insider

From a Sox guy...

Doesn't make sense from the Mariners POV unless they are getting something with Hoerner. Hoerner isn't worth Young and Felnin.

They are getting one of the prospects from the Cubs I would imagine.

It's also probably hopeful thinking from a White Sox guy on what Crochet can get back.  That may be a little steep for Hoerner but it's not dramatically off.

If the Cubs traded Nico to get a staring pitcher would they need to trade Bellinger? They don’t need that money for much of anything unless they are going to go big on a FA pen arm, which I doubt. Why not give Shaw second base and stick with the rest of the guys. If anything, I would like to see them find  way to get Lowe and let him play 2nd. With the savings of payroll on the Hoerner/Crochet difference they should have no issue adding Lowe, a pen arm, a right hands bench bat(Grichek) and a catcher(Jansen)

Chris Cotillo was in the same boat and was just a teenager and seen as an insider wannabe and then he against all odds broke the Arietta/Strop trade.

So what would the framework look like?

Cubs get Crochet

Mariners get Hoerner, maybe a pitcher from either us or the Sox?

White Sox get Caissie, Cole Young, Celestin, Birdsell? Triantos? Rojas?

Crochet is great but he is still a pitcher. I'd feel a bit nervous giving up that much and getting just him in return but maybe I'm being naive.

Hell, maybe this blows up and Robert also goes to Seattle.

Yeah. Cotillo taught me that not everything you read on Twitter is nonsense. Despite the age.

The last massive Cub/White Sox trade was broken by KatyPerrysBootyHole. Trades break from odd places.

That's 2 top 70 prospects for Hoerner. I would comfortably say that is dramatically off.

Let's say this a different way, it's nearly impossible for a package to be good enough to get Crochet but way too much to give up for Nico.  They're too similar value wise.
