although his credability is a little shot after the trade rumors this week, Bruce Levine tried to wade through some of the misinformation on Prior last night on Trib Sportsnite Live (or whatever) on CSN.

he's had discussions with O'Neil. as soon as the swelling goes down, Prior can begin throwing. he can even throw before the break heals. however, the time table is still expected to be 4-6 weeks.

The rash of injuries could be blessings in disguise. If the Cubs make the playoffs, Prior and Wood won't be run down by overuse.

Kerry threw a 30-pitch bullpen session earlier today and everything went well.

On ESPN, they said he threw 40 today, and that he would throw 60 on Wednesday. Hopefully, he can start a rehab assignment in the next 2 weeks.

Cubs.com also said 30, so I'm guessing ESPN got it wrong.

Kerry's bullpen session went well today, although Mazur didn't say how many pitches he threw. He'll take two days off before throwing two more bullpen sessions. He thinks he'll be ready for a rehab start after that.

Prior's arm range is continuing to improve by the day.

From Cubs.com:

Step by step: Kerry Wood threw two 20-pitch sessions in the bullpen on Wednesday, and reported no problems with his right shoulder. The first session was all fastballs, and Wood threw breaking balls in the second session. Wednesday was the first time he threw any sliders.

Wood last pitched April 30, against Houston, and is sidelined with a strained right shoulder.

"Everything felt good," Wood said. "I think I'll get two days off this time, so I'll throw Saturday. I'm guessing we'll go another bullpen."

Haven't seen this elsewhere, but in today's Trib Dusty states that he thinks/hopes Nomar could be back by the AS break :D This is the first offical Cubs personnel statement I recall that gives any sort of possible return date for Nomar. Dusty also mentioned that he expect Prior back no later than the AS break, which is consistent with the 4-6 weeks mentioned earlier.

He is on crack. I'm pretty sure Nomar isn't even running yet. I expect him back anywhere from August 1-15

yeah, there's no way he's back by the break.

How do you know? The first game after the AS break is July 14th -six weeks from now. What information do you have that rules out him being back by then. Given the Cubs recent history of being very careful of announcing timetables, I think it's telling that Dusty would mention the AS Break. I don't know that for sure. But neither do you. Either way, I think it's clear they expect him to play again this year, which was in question just a few weeks ago. It will be a huge lift to get him back at any time, even with Perez playing the way he is.

I'd love to see him back 7/14, but 8/1 would be allright as well. If opnly to give him a couple of weeks on a rehab assignment to get his eye back.

IIRC, Piazza had a simlar injury and didn't come back until September.

I will be mildly surprised if Nomar ever wears a Cub jersey again.

I'm not a doctor and i don't have any inside info on Nomar, but I think ruling him out for the year is a little premature and flies in the face of the evidence we have. For one thing, Piazza's injury occured at the end of May. Nomar's was almost exactly one month earlier at the end of April. Secon, Piazza didn't have surgery while Nomar did. This was to clean up the area around the tendon, not to fix the tendon and was done to make the healing process better. For Piazza's injury they said 4-6 weeks but one doctor said a minimum of 8 weeks. For Nomar they said 2-3 months. Three months is July 20th. I don't think it's impossible, given Dusty's optimism, that he is slightly ahead of schedule. Which makes July 14th, first game after the AS break, reasonable. However, it is interesting that July 20th is the date of our next Cardinal series. How would that be for a pick-me-up if Nomar was back.

Again, I don't claim to have any more information. But I don't think comparing him to Piazza is the way to go. Even if we did, the fact that Piazza's injury occured a month after Nomar's, and that Piazza came back in Septemeber, would mean at the very least we could expect Nomar in early August given your rationale.

I thought Piazza's injury was a quadricep that "rolled up". In addition, are you certain Piazza didn't have surgery? I can't believe such an injury would repair itself.

I don't know? I hope you are correct. But I would think it would take longer to heal with surgery then without?

But I aint no medical doctor neither.

I don't knoww either. Just hopeful. I think we need to go out and get another bat regardless.

From ESPN.com

New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza will miss at least six weeks, and possibly the rest of the season, after tearing his right groin muscle last week.

Also from ESPN:

Piazza saw team physician Dr. Andrew Rokito, who said the All-Star catcher had a Grade 3 strain -- the most serious -- with the muscle partially torn off the bone. Piazza will not need surgery.

Just FYI - could be apples to oranges for all I know.

When Dusty was asked if he thought Nomar would return this year, I recollect reading something to the effect of "I had hoped for around the All-Star break." Noisesquared, you may be talking about a different article, but I don't think that the aforementioned statement necessarily reflects that Dusty believes Nomar will actually be with the Cubs around that time. I'm not a doctor either, but from what little I've read about his injury, I think even early August might still be optimistic.

Update on Kerry (read the article for plenty of comments about his mechanics:

Cubs.com"]The Chicago Cubs right-hander has been fine-tuning his mechanics during the downtime while he strengthens his right shoulder. On Saturday, he threw three 20-pitch sessions in the bullpen and will take a couple days off before having a regular side. Next on the schedule could be a simulated game.

"We've been on the mound a few times and we cut it loose today, and even last time we cut it loose," Wood said Saturday. "It was pretty aggressive work today and everything felt great."

As for his mechanics, Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild has simply been stressing to Wood to use good form and stick with it.

"Today, the delivery felt the best it's been in a long time," Wood said. "My direction was good and the ball was coming out of my hand real easy. I've been working on it the last couple weeks, kind of dry in the mirror and the weight room.

Remmy:

Reliever Mike Remlinger is expected to be activated on Sunday when his 15-day disabled list time is over.

"He's throwing quite a bit and Larry said he's throwing better than when he left," Baker said.

Prior was able to play catch today, which is a big first step. According to Rothschild, he'll play some more catch tomorrow and then see how it is from there.

As for Kerry, he'll throw a simulated game in a few days.

The Trib says that Wood will throw "simulated batting practice" on Wednesday.

If it's batting practice, why is it simulated? If it's simulated, why throw batting practice?

The Trib"] Wood, who has been on the disabled list since May 3, has been pitching in the bullpen and "throwing all my pitches and building back arm strength." He hopes to go on a rehab assignment after Wednesday's session, but most likely will have at least one more.

When he is sent out on minor-league rehab, he will make two or three starts and still perhaps return before July.

"That's kind of what I have in mind, but we haven't gotten too far ahead of ourselves," Wood said. "We've just gone mound session-to-mound session. Mentally, I have a date in mind but we'll have to see."

[P]rior is "ahead of schedule," according to trainer Mark O'Neal, who supervised his 10 minutes of throwing from up to 120 feet for a second straight day.

"He throws to the point where if he feels any discomfort then we back it down," O'Neal said. "The most important reason for doing this is to keep his arm strength up, so when he is able to come back he hasn't lost arm or shoulder strength."

O'Neal said Prior's elbow "is still very tender on the contusion (outer) side."

Kerry Wood's trophy chest must have a heck of a lot of Simulated Cy Youngs at this point.

I don't know whether to  or  at that.

The Heckler recently had an article that Kerry won his 100th career simulated game. So congrats to him for that!

He's so inconsistent as a simulated game starter that I wish the Cubs would switch him to simulated closer. Or trade him for simulated Gange. :)
