Kerry's supposed to throw as much as three innings today to live batters (not sure why he called it simulated batting practice).

Cubs.com"]The simulation lasted three innings with Wood throwing about 45 pitches. No official stats are taken during such games, but it appeared Wood gave up three hits and struck out two while facing teammates Jose Macias and Enrique Wilson.

After the session, Wood felt he had made progress and said that the little things he has been working on in his side throws were starting to show.

"I felt pretty good," Wood said of his session. "I was trying to take what I've been working on the side and use it with hitters in there. I threw a few more pitches than I wanted to throw in three innings, but I felt great. My slider was good, changeup was good and the ball was jumping, so I can't complain."

.............

"I talked to the hitters for a good barometer on how he was throwing, and they said he was throwing excellent," Baker said.

..............

"Today, overall, and his sides -- particularly the side in San Diego -- is as good as I've seen him," Rothschild said. "I thought he did well today. The biggest thing is how he feels tomorrow, and more importantly, how he feels the next couple days."

The next step for Wood will be to see how he feels over the next couple days. Whether Wood will stick around to throw another simulated game or be sent off on his first rehabilitation assignment will depend on if there is any pain or discomfort in the shoulder, which he had none of on Wednesday.

Prior threw again today, as well.

"We were a bit concerned in the fifth and sixth and seventh. He started cramping," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "We said, 'Hey man, we can't have him cramping anymore cause we know he's going to be sore.' That's why we took him out."

I'm sure it's not serious but it's something to keep an eye on.

The Trib says that Wood will throw "simulated batting practice" on Wednesday.

If it's batting practice, why is it simulated? If it's simulated, why throw batting practice?

Because the batters were Enrique Wilson and Jose Macias.

Actually, the scary part is that this is true.

Any pitcher who throws against Macias and Wilson automatically becomes an excellent pitcher.

Jeff Vorva/Daily Southtown"] If Kerry Wood feels good today and Friday, the Cubs may send him on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa to face New Orleans on Monday. If the Cubs' fireballer doesn't feel well, he will throw a simulated game at Wrigley Field before the Cubs face the Florida Marlins on Monday. ...

"That second day is the test," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "We'll see how he feels on Friday and make the determination if he needs another simulated game or if he goes on a rehab assignment. I can't give you a definitive answer right now. But so far, things are looking better."

If Wood goes on a rehab assignment, it could be for two or more starts. The Cubs would like for Wood to get his pitch count in the 90-100 range.

Cubs.com"]Garciaparra is rehabbing in Arizona. He has been able to jog about 60 yards, which he calls "heavier walks," and hopes to start swinging off a tee next week.

"I'm healing every day, which is good," Garciaparra said. "Definitely some intense workouts, definitely some pain, some things I'm going to have to get through and also see how it recovers after the intense workouts."

Good news on Kerry. He threw very well off the mound today and he'll report to Iowa on Monday to start two or three games.

Here's the latest on Prior:

Cubs.com"]Wood had a final side session on Saturday. Mark Prior, on the disabled list with a compressed fracture in his right elbow, also threw off the mound Saturday, although it was more to work on his mechanics than build up arm strength. He will throw again on Sunday.

"I still have some pain at times when I start hammering down and get full extension," Prior said. "I think we finally got to the point where I've got full extension. There's still some discomfort, and there's a lot at times. We're trying to work through it and get back as quick as I can and keep my arm strength so I don't have to do a lot when I am ready to go."

Zambrano hurts toe. Here's a link from

Cubs.com"]Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano had to leave Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox after five innings because of a sprained left big toe. He was taken to a local hospital for precautionary X-rays.

Zambrano injured himself sliding into second base in the fifth inning against the Red Sox. He had singled to lead off the inning and was forced out at second.

What a poor slide too....ugh...c'mon Carlos. Between sliding and trying to barehand line drives, I'm surprised he's been healthy this long.

Whoops. My bad. This forum is the only one I go to where swearing is not allowed....I'll try and keep a better eye out for those.

Wow! Prior threw off the bullpen mound earlier today! Just fastballs and changeups, but he felt he had some life on his pitches and felt good.

Cubs.com"]Carlos Zambrano was able to throw in his bullpen session on Monday and did not experience any problems with his left big toe, which he sprained on Saturday. Zambrano is expected to make his next start Friday against the New York Yankees. He does have his big toe taped to the one next to it to protect it.

.................

Pitcher Scott Williamson, who is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery in Arizona at the Cubs' extended Spring Training facility, is throwing in the bullpen and making progress.

Wood vs. Cepicky (lefty)

-strike taken, 0-1

-up and away, 1-1

Wood vs. Watson

-up and away, 1-0

-foul, 1-1

-change, lined to short and Cedeno makes a great catch (bullpen up)

Wood vs. Godwin

-foul, 0-1

-backdoor slider taken, 0-2

-breaking ball, bloop single

Wood vs. Harris

-inside, 1-0

-grounded to short, 6-4-3 DP to end the inning

Final line: 3 IP, 1 earned, 3 hits, 2 BBs, 3 Ks, 46 pitches. The radar gun is slow, so don't worry about the readings. He had his normal velocity and when he was missing with the fastball, he was mostly missing up and away (like normal). Kerry also crushed one high off the wall in center and coasted into third with an easy triple. He scored the tying run a pitch later.

He was scheduled to throw 60 pitches but had to leave because of the rain delay. He'll almost definitely have to have two more starts at Iowa in order to get that pitch count up now.

With 10 game days beginning this Friday at Yankee Stadium, that would mean someone will have to start 2 more times in his place while he continues to rehab.

Anyone find any more news on Prior? Last I heard he was throwing off a mound. I'm glad to see that he's rebounding from this injury quite quickly.

ESPN showed a clip of him during the game on Sunday. They never showed him actually throwing, but he was standing on the mound about to throw (I think it was the bullpen mound).

It was a nice sight.

During SportsCenter yesterday, they showed a different clip of Mark throwing on flat ground in the OF and then cut to Kerry striking someone out in Iowa.

Well according to Cubs.com, Prior threw again today and there are some good quotes about it over there. Basicaly he says that stuff like throwing doesn't nessacarily bother him all the time but some everyday stuff aggrvates it and he is taking it 1 day at a time.
