Williamson pitched 2 scoreless innings for Mesa yesterday giving up 1 hit. Sounds like his rehab is going well.

I'm hoping the last 2 games in Atlanta are rained out and the Marlin games are postponed because of the hurricane. I'd rather see Lee just rest his sore shoulder until the All-Star game. You know he's not going to sit himself out voluntarily for that long.

We need to hope that DOESN'T happen; it would create a scheduling mess possibly even worse than last year (when the Cubs didn't have any off days the last few weeks of the season due to make-up games). I don't think the Cubs are scheduled to play either team the rest of the season after this week, so any games not played this week would need to be rescheduled during mutual off-days. If we have to do this for both the Braves and Marlins it could be a mess.

The Marlins have one more series in August (I think 9-11) at Wrigley, and I believe the Braves still have to visit Wrigley again.

Wouldn't mind 84-85 home games this year :)

You're right about both of them; in fact, they're back-to-back series in late August (with an off day in between). For some reason I was thinking there was only one home series against each team and that they'd already played the Braves in Chicago.

Next time maybe I should actually check the schedule before making such a post. :D

How many times have we seen Baker say one thing and the player come out and say another. Here's Baker and Lee talking about Lee's Sore Shoulder:

Baker:

He's more sore today than he was [Wednesday],'' said Baker, who was asked if resting Lee through the All-Star break was a possibility. "We'll see how he feels. It's a day-to-day thing. We'll have to wait until [tonight].''

Lee:

When informed of Baker's comments, Lee said his shoulder wasn't sorer Thursday, though it did remain sore. He didn't play in the doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves.

Lee, who aggravated the shoulder on a first-inning swing Tuesday, disagreed with any suggestion that he might sit out the three games in Florida before the break or that his All-Star start might be in jeopardy.

"I'll play [tonight] or the next day at the latest,'' Lee said.

Updates on Aramis and Adam.

Ramirez, who will play in Tuesday's All-Star Game, fouled a ball off his left big toe in the sixth inning and left the game. X-rays were negative.

"He'll be tender and he'll be sore," Cubs athletic trainer Mark O'Neal said. "We anticipate he'll be ready to go [sunday]."

Greenberg probably will need a few days. While Matt Murton was 2-for-2 with an RBI in his Major League debut on Friday for the Cubs, Greenberg didn't have such luck. He pinch-hit in the ninth and was hit on the back of the head by a pitch from Marlins reliever Valerio De Los Santos. Greenberg fell to the ground, grabbing the back of his head. He appeared to be a little woozy as he was helped from the field by the Cubs trainers.

"He never lost consciousness and was able to answer questions for us right there on the field," O'Neal said. "[The Marlins'] internist came over and looked at him and he checked out completely fine, and right now his parents are here, and we'll watch him through the night."

Apparently, according to Bruce Miles in today's Daily Herald, De los Santos called the clubhouse to check on Greenberg.

De los Santos called the Cubs clubhouse to check on Greenberg.

“I hope he’s fine,” said de los Santos, who added that the 26-mph wind knocked him off-balance. “It really hurts. I know it hurts him, but it hurts me too.”

Well it was nice for De los Santos to call to make sure he was all right. Also from Cubs.com

Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood had volunteered to monitor the kid, not knowing his parents were in town.

New article on Cubs.com about a target date of August 1st for Nomar's return:

"He's in Mesa right now, and I was looking at the report and he was doing some first-to-third drills, running from first to third, and ground balls and things like that," Cubs athletic trainer Mark O'Neal said. "We're progressing, hopefully soon to some games in Mesa, but we're probably a week away from that.

"He's hitting and it just depends on how much time he'll need in the Minor Leagues to get ready," O'Neal said. "We're hoping by the third week in July he's in games in the Minor Leagues somewhere and that would give him 10 days to two weeks to be back here by the first of August. Position players are a little more predictable. With him, it's when he feels comfortable at the plate and can play a full game."

The Cubs had tentatively set an Aug. 1 deadline for his return after Garciaparra was examined in Chicago in June when he showed up for the Cubs-Red Sox series.

From Cubs.com

Nomar Garciaparra is continuing to make progress, and the shortstop could be back with the Chicago Cubs by Aug. 1.

Wow. That's great news. Hopefully the date is accurate.

On WGN Radio, Andy Mazur said that Nomar could start playing in rehab games as early as another week.

And if they really believe that, Cedeno needs to start at Iowa right after the break. No more wasting away on the bench.

I think Cedeno is with us until Nomar returns. There's no one else to play SS. I really hope Nomar is back August 1st as it will be like adding a SS at the deadline. One can only hope he can play effectively.

not to be overly pessimistic but that didn't exactly work last year....

I'll take the .297 BA and .350 OBP that Nomar put up for the last two months last year. It's a massive improvement even if he's no more effective than that. What happend last year can't be laid at Nomar's door.

i didn't say it should, just said it didn't get us to the playoffs last year....i was just being a smartass

Wasn't trying to jump on you. My smartass detector has been out of whack all season. I'm just hoping we can get those kinds of numbers out of Nomar.

It's been about a week since Williamson pitched for Mesa, but it looks like he could be activated as early as mid-August if all goes well:

Sun-Times[/url]"]Dempster's rapid return last season following Tommy John elbow surgery could be repeated this season by Scott Williamson.

The right-hander has progressed enough in his rehab that he could begin a minor-league assignment next week, Hendry said.

The Cubs signed Williamson in the offseason with the hope he could return to effective form as Dempster did. Williamson, 29, had 21 saves for the Cincinnati Reds in 2003 before being traded to the Red Sox. His elbow problems began to flare last season.

According to Williamson, the Cubs need to see him throw in back-to-back games at Iowa. He said that it could be a matter of five or six days before he gets activated or as much as three weeks.
