That is the case. They traded up in a sense to get Booker (they traded the Bills for the pick they traded to them before for Ryan Bates, but this time the Bills get a 4th next year).

Troy Taylor, the punter was not traded up for. The stuff you are talking about is for Austin Booker, the EDGE rusher they got in the 5th.

Taylor ends up being part of the first overall pick trade last year, as that was the pick we got from Phily for swapping places from 9 to 10.

The late rounds of this draft are widely considered to be trash. Don’t know why they would try and move back in.

While I'm in total agreement with you here, I do think they did a pretty good job of trading back in since this guy was a top 30 talent that slipped to the 5th. Seemed Poles always liked that guy, so it's surprising that he took Taylor in the 4th instead of Booker. But I'd say it worked out pretty well.

If Fields can beat out Wilson for the job in Pitt and play 51% of the snaps, the Bears get that 6th rounder upped to a 4th, so no real loss IF that happens.

It's Tory!  Not Tony, not Troy. And you're going to like him.

I was kinda hoping we'd never have to punt ever again after drafting Caleb and Rome.

Overall don’t have any problems with this draft. The third round tackle may have been a bit of a reach, but seems like a guy who can be a stud if he makes it, so that’s fine.

I assume they’ll have a bunch of udfa. Hopefully the rest of the roster is good enough that none of them make it

It's really getting tiresome to hear all the talking heads on NFL network drone on and on about what a great situation JJ McCarthy is entering.  I'm probably being selfish because all I want them to talk about is the Bears draft and, in the end, all their talk is worthless, still, seems like they're spending an awful lot of time talking about JJ McCarthy.  For the record, Caleb Williams' situation with the Bears isn't too bad either.

Okay, re-wind, delete above was written before I saw this - Who won Day 1 segment - https://www.nfl.com/network/shows/good-morning-football# - he's correct, they won't be Super Bowl contenders, they'll be competent to good, no more QB looking like a deer in headlights waiting to be sacked, no more, they are done being your whipping boy Green Bay, Minnesota and Detroit.

It truly is #KingPoles coming out party. Following him for the last 2+ years, I appreciate that everything he does has a strategic logic to it. I grew up in the Angelo era, and Jerry was always scrambling to patch up holes and throw things together. There wasn't a long arc of strategic thinking - and none of the GMs that followed him had one either.

Everything Poles does makes sense. Not all of it works out (look at Claypool and Velus Jones) but that will always be the case. The method is sound. This could all fail - QB prospects are notoriously fickle and can fail. Unforeseen injuries could torpedo the team. Things one could never predict could emerge. But I've seen enough to anoint #KingPoles.

There are two parts, strategy and tactics. The plan is good, but the jury is still out on the tactics. The most important of which (besides QB) is the head coach.

Caleb annoys me for some reason. It’s none of the fingernail polish stuff or anything like that. Just his personality. And there’s no rational reason for it, admittedly. I really hope he lives up to the hype but I’m skeptical.

I'm kind of baffled by the media's hate on Chicago's 4th round pick. I get it that a 4th round pick on a punter is not conventional, but there's several mitigating factors. #1, the depth in this draft was supposedly quite bad after the first 2 to 3 rounds. #2, we're talking about a guy who was a historically good punter. So I really have no issues with Poles choosing a guy who may be top 5 at his position from day 1 versus another position where you're probably getting a rotational piece.

Especially when you factor in how bad that part of the team was last year.

If this kid is as good as advertised, he's a weapon similar to Hestor. Given that they were out of picks and the quality of the players left, this is a great pick, IMO.

I'll take average, as we know this would be a significant upgrade for the Bears.  Realistically, with average play at QB, this team should put up a shitload of points.  I figure anything beyond average is gravy that's how low the bar is for a Bears QB.

He's going to be at least solid. I do expect a ton of fumbles in year 1 and a decent amount of picks though. Whether or not Caleb is going to go from merely average to elite is if he learns to take what's available and learns that hero ball does not work in the NFL. There's nothing wrong with checking down.

He's good. He got plenty of practice to perfect his craft.

I'd rather say "shrug it's a fourth round pick" than be one of those bears fans suddenly soliloquizing over the importance of punters

I got all of that out my system with sauerbrun

One thing about punters in the modern NFL is also.... field position has never mattered less. Its not just the hope that we wont have to punt that much, its also the fact that it doesn't matter where you give someone the ball anymore. They'll still just march down the field. The difference between giving them the ball on the 20 and pinning them inside the 5 is not nearly as important as it once was.

If they have a top 10 offense and a top 10 defense, which is reasonably in play, they are super bowl contenders.

Basically if Caleb is as good in year 1 as other guys with similar pedigrees (and some with lesser) have done with largely far worse supporting casts.

Not sure if posted, but DJ is apparently still working out in LA with Caleb.
