This would be like us trading, what, Wesneski, Keegan, Ben Brown and spare parts?

We don't have perfect parallels for a lot of these guys but something more like Wicks, Assad, Wesneski, Thompson, and Tauchman?

I probably still would have done it but that's a BIG bite out of the young pitching cache.  I think it's probably an overpay which is why the Padres aren't waiting around for Ohtani to sign.

I think it would be more like Horton than Brown. And I am fine with the Cubs not doing that.

Swap out Tauchman for Amaya. They want a catcher back as well.

Yeah but Amaya is way way more valuable than Higashioka.  Tauchman is a little closer as a pre-FA guy in his 30's that you'd pencil in for ~1.5 WAR if he started every day

But yeah there's not a perfect parallel for several of these guys.  Like King has much better stuff than Assad but less starting experience and less team control.

I've been working and may have missed it, but if Grisham is still in the deal he's got non-trivial surplus value. So doing the deal without him probably knocks off one of Assad/Wesneski?

Honestly, that’s a fair trade. Only one top prospect and a lot of ok but nothing you’re going to regret.

Hes going to be a free agent next year. Let’s get the thread up so we can all piss and moan when he signs with the Cardinals.

I put 3:1 on him signing with the Yankees. He's gonna hit about 30 HR in that ****** little park alone.

More than likely.

People are severely underestimating King. An absolute lock down reliever in 2022(2.29 ERA, 2.23FIP) who was lock down in 2023 and transitioned into a starter putting up 2.2 fwar in only 104.2IP. He's really really good. The trade value site has him listed at 33.4, that's equivalent to a Cade Horton level prospect.

I get the logic but I also remember when Adrian Gonzalez was going to hit 50 hrs in Boston (or equally out of SD) and Soriano was going to hit 15 in Washington.  Sometimes you just don't know...

- Drew Thorpe’s excellent, one of the best in the minors and a good get for the Padres

- I’m so curious how Soto’s FA is going to get attacked next year. We know it’s coming: aging, actually not that good, greedy, demanding, power hungry, no one need needs stars, the salary cap etc etc so many ways to go aboot it

I'm curious if you acknowledge that he's being shopped by San Diego yet.

I didn’t see the Yankees gave up pitching for Verdugo too. They’re going to have use a juggs machine for pitching in the minors.

Hopefully cubs make a run at him next free agency. Not much faith in hoyer tho

I don't know.  Suddenly Boras seems open to extensions (with Alonso and Harper), so watch the Yankees immediately lock Soto up long term.

Another chance to be disappointed

I am already preparing myself to be disappointed in 2-3 years time when Ohtani opts out of whatever contract he signs this winter lol.

So in the last few days the Yankees have traded most of their upper level pitching depth for 3 outfielders, and now they're within 5M of last year's payroll(which was a record high for them AFAICT) with a rotation of Cole, the hope that Rodon is healthy/unbroken, Schmidt, Cortes, and a bodega cat.  What's the plan here, are they gonna just tack on money since they're over the third threshold and paying third time repeater penalties anyway?  Continue selling off the farm for another SP?  The rest of that lineup isn't exactly the stuff of dreams either.

They're all in on Yamamoto according to just about everyone, so my guess is they just pay the luxury tax.

They also lost 2 pitchers in the rule 5

If they think Gleyber would take to 3rd Jed bringing him home and backfilling some of NYY's lost pitching would make a ton of sense all around.
