Ahh, got it.  One interview from four years ago equates to getting the inside scoop always.  Got it.

You could just say you haven’t been paying attention.

Anecdotal as hell, but if the Cubs sign Ohtani my kids are getting his jerseys for Christmas.  Not the case with Soto.

Dang. Now I want an ohtani jersey

Per Heyman and Martino of the Post:

Padres and Yankees far off. Yankees want Grishom as well as Soto. Padres asking for "Michael King and as many as 6 more prospects" as well as cash. Yankees may walk away for the time being.

If there is any validity to this, then there is no way a Soto deal gets done without SD drastically lowering their ask.

also the revenue thing. I could see the Ricketts being willing to pay Ohtani but not Soto

I guess this is my major worry right now. We may have let ourselves get a little too excited about this off-season. I think they are legit going all in for Ohtani and that's fun. But he offers a lot of unique revenue options for the Ricketts that other guys don't. And the downside of spending years not trying to play in the top FA markets is this team probably isn't as enticing as others if you value consistent winning. Ive no doubt theyd go pretty big if they landed Ohtani. But I'm pretty worried about what a non Ohtani off-season looks like. There's not a lot of exciting long term prospects in FA and I could see Jed going back to his smart spending route there. But I gotta think they've got some trade plans in mind with the farm depth and hopefully they can still piece something together to get some stars and become the favorites in this awful division. Even if those trades will likely be very painful.

I still don't think they get Counsell with a "maybe Ohtani, maybe a nothing fun" offseason. The money matters, but the Mets I'm sure would have also offered lots of money.

If there's a light for me, it's that.

I agree. I still have faith this will be a good off season and the team they put on the field will protect to a 90+ win team. And looking at the Yankees collection of guys said to be going for Soto, I think if the Cubs do lose out on Ohtani they can easily put something together that the Padres would take that wouldn’t cost a top 10 system prospect. Maybe not even top 20. Maybe Aasad and add a few back end prospects. I was not overly impressed with what the Yankees offered. Maybe they aren’t in now because they feel they have a good chance at Ohtani. That might change if they lose him.

Yah, I'm holding on to the hope that they won't throw another "can be above .500 with positive variance" team on the field next year no matter what. They should put out a team that's favorites to win the division.  It seems like they're ready to push again. But I think an Ohtani signing definitely impacts how aggressive Jed will be.

I gotta think, despite what Rogers may think (and, lets all remember, that despite having sources, Jesse is an idiot, so we can trust his sourced reporting while questioning his analysis/interpretation lol), that that just may be the case for right now.  I mean, it's possible that he's heard that they just don't have interest, but I'm sure all of the focus is on Shohei right now and if/when he signs elsewhere, whatever Plan B is will become the focus.

Rogers apparently backed off of this today.

I think the Soto problem is what SD wants. The best pitching prospect I would be ok with dealing would be Brown. Then maybe another couple guys outside the top 20 on the Cubs. Or maybe Aasad or Wesneski. Seems they are asking a lot right now.

Does San Diego have any leverage though? They literally almost HAVE to trade him. They cant afford to make payroll. I’m not saying they will end up taking a bag of balls for him, but I also think inquiring teams know they hold the leverage, not San Diego. They are obviously going to come out swinging for the fences and once everybody is done laughing at them, they will likely get more realistic.

Yes Brown. Chatting from my phone isn’t always easy. Thanks for figuring that out. 😬

Maybe they will get more realistic. But it might take a while. Not like the Cubs are the only team they will work with. But right now, IMO with what they are said to be looking for, Soto is not an option.

Leverage is always always always other teams.  A GM could come out and say "our owner has decreed we absolutely must trade this player" and if at least two teams want that player at more or less market value there is zero loss of leverage.  Conversely no amount of "we totally still want him we swear" matters if you're holding a distressed asset.

Soto's amazing.  The market's a little limited by his $30M+ salary but there will probably be 4-5 teams on him heavily.  My guess is Preller's just asking for the moon hoping someone does something stupid before Ohtani signs and he has to buckle down and get serious.

Padres must have asked for Horton as the lead piece. If the Yankees make this trade, it feels like Thorpe will be that piece. He had phenomonal numbers this year, most comparable to Horton, regardless of draft status or pedigree,

Yeah, Thorpe is a dude. If it's true Thorpe goes, that's a heavy price. I love Soto, but I wouldn't trade Horton for a year of him.

After looking at Thorpes numbers - wow. Can't imagine letting him go, even for Soto.

Looks as though he could be someone really special.
