I am fine with this . I believe both of them will be rule 5 elegible as well . He isn’t a super sexy acquisition but there won’t be any impact bats traded most likely . 24 hours to hopefully get a couple of strong relievers .

He's a 4 win type player, not super sexy but a good all-around player without any obvious weakness.

I mentioned this in the other thread but Candelario's 3.1 fWAR this year would be second on the Cubs (position players and pitchers).  While historically he hasn't been anything special defensively, for whatever reason this year he's grading highly.

Good move and low cost.

Herz is like the ideal example of a pitcher to trade at the deadline.  Rule 5 eligible, doesn't have premium velocity, can't consistently throw strikes or go deep in games, but enough stuff/bat-missing to have an interested suitor.  Happy to see him used this way.  Made I had more hope for, but it's a long term play given his middling 2023, and the Low/High A infields are gonna get crowded quickly with Shaw, Rivera, Hernandez, and Rojas.  Plus Ed Howard is functionally the same profile if he can get right and isn't imminently Rule 5 eligible.

Ironically I'm a little more ambivalent about Candelario as a target.  I think he does lots of things well, continuing a trend where the front office values well-rounded players over specialists.  He makes the lineup more immune from being one injury away from failure like it has been most of the year.  But he's also a guy who ZiPS doesn't see as a 110+ wRC+ the rest of the year so I'm not certain you couldn't recreate Candelario's ROS with existing pieces used right.  Now you don't have to run that risk and that's worth what you gave up, but as someone who wanted 2024 prioritized before 2023 I now have to hope this a precursor to extending a 30 y/o with inconsistent track record in order to get that benefit.

I think I read that the Cubs were like $5m under the luxury tax.  Candelario has a contract for $5m.  Does that put them over, or are we only looking at adding 2 months worth of $5m for lux tax purposes?

Cubs got cash consideration in the deal too, so they're probably still close to the 5 mil under the Threshold.

I'd prefer Mancini to go but have to guess Wisdom may be on the who wants him list,  only because of the position played.

Granted I know very very little about prospects but that seems like a great move. Candelario has been very good and on days Mancini doesn't play, third base was our only clear offensive weakness. I like it a lot.

They obviously need another lefty in pen and an upgraded arm there too.

I'm guessing of the ones they have currently,  Fulmer and Rucker may be the odd man out

Rucker is already in Iowa. I don’t know about Fulmer, they seem to like him and he’s largely fixed many of his early season issues, though control is a concern.

I would guess someone like Kay, Assad or Palencia.

Brad Boxberger (remember him?) has already resumed throwing and will take up another roster spot, but not sure how far away he is.

Just figured they'd keep Kay as he the only current lefty they have on roster and add another with him, I guess Assad or Palencia can go back down

I had Jaimer as an answer to a Cubs/Tigers immaculate grid the other week so I think I deserve some credit for bringing this trade together.

They need Assad on mop up duty every fifth game.

Since some were wondering if Candelario got a WS ring (which it then became clear he did since he played for the 2016 Cubs), I stumbled upon this old pic tonight:
