I, for one, am excited:

- the One Man “strategy” is dead dead dead

- Cubs lose their get out of jail free card with fans. It’s just a fact, science even, that Cubs fans would see the job as done and show up in droves with their digital wallets ready over this one move *all while* not actually expecting the team to win until 2525 when they’re properly Ready

- Some spit on the age + QO oriented model many use to evaluate FAs

- Call me crazy but a giant, slow footed SS with back injuries is not the ideal post-shift player at the position no matter the past results

This excitement will go away if they do nothing but I’m an optimist

Big overpay + injury history = crippling, dead money contract, all it takes is for him to get hurt to have baseball talking about how reckless and foolish it is to give such a contract to Correa. And we all know had the Cubs made this move, Correa would probably be injured stepping off the bus on the first day of spring training.

On the other hand, 13 years is stupid, and this might become the next Heyward contract

They could easily take that kind of hit if they needed to; other big market teams do it.

People bitched and moaned about Heyward's contract for the past 6 years, so I guess....those people?

And another long-term dud contract just gives Hoyer/Ricketts another excuse never to spend money again

You can't have it both ways.

Shouldnt sign a long-term contract because in the future it could scare them from signing the long-term contract we’re not signing now.

Yes, it's a made up problem by the owners.

Yep, so why should we be surprised when they don't sign anyone?

because the stated goal of every professional sports franchise is to win games, but for this particular professional sports franchise, that's not exactly a priority

Man the pressure is really on to nab Swanson. Because the order of events means there's not really anything else to pivot to.

Like I'm cool with Swanson and have been for a while. But a no shortstop offseason and to a lesser extent a Swanson offseason necessitated going hard essentially everywhere else. If you whiff on Dansby too...yikes.

i guess there's three options

the owners dont have any money or wont allocate it

jed is afraid to spend or just sucks at making offers

top FAs look at our roster and how our owners treat the team and dont want to come to chicago

i'd rather not waste time on swanson if this is how it's gonna go. Just do another year of development and hope to get a competent FO in at a later date. what's the point in committing 200 mil to swanson if we're going to act like the pirates otherwise

The stated goal and actual goal are quite different. I don't believe the Pirates, Orioles, A's, etc. have any goal of actually winning

The orioles are probably actually trying a little bit but regardless it’s embarrassing that the cubs are in this grouping

If he was always "the guy", kudos to the Cubs for giving him all the leverage by letting him become the last man standing.

The one American sport where financial dominance can secure you regular playoff appearances, we cheer for an extremely wealthy and profitable team, and they can’t commit.

That's exactly correct. The Ricketts have 24/7 assets around Wrigley that generate thousands of dollars per day every day. Even if Correrra is a total bust it would hardly cripple the team financially.

On the one hand, sign someone already

You understand that, like the Bogaearts and Turner contracts, they're only giving them these extra long contracts to lower the AAV and help them with their cap situation correct? That's why Correa is only 27.5m annually. If not for the cap implications he would have gotten more like 35M annually and 3 or 4 years less.

We know the first part of option 1 isn't true. If they had no money, they wouldn't have been trying to buy a soccer team.

Yep. And while I would prefer NOT to sign guys to 13 year deals, that's the cost of doing business in this market. Those contracts can still be managed in a way that doesn't completely cripple a team's future, as long as teams have enough guys who are on the front (productive) end of their deals to balance out the others who are being overpaid in their later years. Of course that doesn't work if you operate in boom or bust cycles, like the Cubs, and only sign long term deals at specific times in the competitive window.

He's got a competent agent, so that was always likely to be the scenario anyway. Not to mention his getting married this offseason also helped determine the timing.

Is Correa any good at making rain delay speeches?

Higher number:

-games the Cubs win in 2023

-innings of Cubs baseball I watch in 2023

It will probably be the innings but it's sad that it's even a question.

When you only have to watch 7 full games to beat the number...
