Welp, if Rosenthal is saying it, it makes me believe they're trying. If there was any question that Zobrist is not getting paid, this should dispel any doubts.

I know its a pipe dream and who knows if Morrow is even alive much less in line to return but how awesome would this set up be in October:

9th - Kimbrel

8th - Morrow

7th - Strop

6th - Cishek

for what little it's worth, matt spiegel was on for transition with the parkins and mcneil show as he was setting up to do cubs pregame yesterday and suggested he's heard talk about them going after will smith.

It’s Levine, who is bad at words, but he might have let it slip Zobrist retired or plans on it.

I think it's just shorthand.

Will Zobrist's retirement decision impact the signing? I.e., if Zobrist decides to retire.

Is anybody else in that limbo where they want this to happen, while still being pretty sure it would end up being a disaster?

Pretty much everybody?

Yeah, he's definitely not some savior, especially getting started this late in the year. But it's not like you're locking him into a spot in the lineup, so if he sucks, whatever. We have plenty of experience in dealing with bad pitching signings. Plus, the Cubs signing him means the Brewers and the Cardinals didn't.

It all comes down to the contract for me if we commit multiple years I won’t like it

I believe while a player is on the restricted list their salary does not count against the luxury tax. Not sure how big of an issue that is but that could be just as important as the actually money that would be going to Zobrist in deciding what moves the Cubs want to make.

Then you won't like it.

Bastin's article on cubs.com says a player on the restricted list doesn't receive salary.

I saw the Rosenthal tweet and knew I needed to come to this thread before it happened to mention that I'm paranoid Kimbrel is going to be terrible, between age and the super long layoff.

Zobrist's piddly 9 million dollars is stopping us from making baseball moves?

Seriously the Ricketts can go horsefeathers themselves

I know, I was pointing out that the luxury tax concern might be of more importance and I believe a club might choose to pay the player while he is on the Restricted List in certain circumstances even if they don't have to. Just because the Cubs are looking into signing Kimbrel wouldn't necessarily mean they are not paying Zobrist all or part of the contract. The ability to sign someone else since Zobrist is on the restricted list could just because of luxury tax flexibility. That all said, they very will might not be paying Zobrist either especially considering how long he has been gone.

Morosi is on the Score saying that he's got another source, separate from Rosenthal's, who thinks the Cubs are frontrunners for Kimbrel.

I think he said it was another MLB executive who has been involved in the talks.

yeah, i'm under the assumption that Morrow is never pitching again. i'm all for acquiring Smith or Doolittle -- set it up Cishek, Strop, Smith/Doolittle, Kimbrel.

Believe me, I'm dreaming it. But I think at this point Morrow is less likely to pitch in a Cubs uniform than Kimbrel.

The only way I like it is if it's for multiple years. Given how likely it Kimbrel is a bust this season, a 1-year deal would be utterly stupid.

Guy averaged 97 on the heater last year. He struggled in the 2nd half but there was no indication he just got old and bad.
