As a person who routinely doesn’t pay enough attention to what’s going on, I thought Kimbrel was coming off an injury and that’s why he hadn’t signed a deal until now. It never ever occurred to me that he could be fully healthy and not find a deal with anyone more than two months into the season.

 

It doesn’t speak highly of the labor compact in MLB if a top of the line player at his position can’t get a deal made until June because of the teams stonewalling him and the whole draft pick thing.

He wanted Chapman/Jansen money/years and they are arguably better than him and were much younger when they signed their deals.

 

He was also not good after the ASB last year. 4.57 ERA in the regular season and 5.91 in the playoffs. 23 walks in those 32 innings.

 

One blowup against Baltimore (4 R in 1/3 IP) skews the regular season numbers but he did give up a run in 5 of his 9 playoff appearances.

there's definitely a real easy answer to this, but how is he able to be optioned to the minors. Is there a provision for situations like this? Is it considered 'rehab'?

Any player can be optioned if they agree to it, I believe.
